A Régua & o Ruído IIThe Ruler & the Noise II
The word cancellation is a two-mark ruler pointed at people, one by one. It fuses opinion, error, provocation and crime into one label, and treats losing your job and going to prison as the same penalty. Here I take the instrument apart across three stations: Monark, Leo Lins, the Rei de Orlando.
The ruler comes back on *why this piece was born already promised*
I promised you this piece. Not as someone announcing a new subject, but as someone leaving a debt written down and signed. In topic 21 of the first Ruler, in the middle of listing what still needed measuring, I wrote it in full: the two-mark ruler comes back, this time calibrated for people. So this broadcast does not open by inventing a sequel. It opens by paying what it owed.
A régua arredonda. O ruído é o que ela apaga.
Before I bring the instrument down onto names, let me restate the thesis that holds all of it up, for whoever arrives now without having gone through part one. Every system has a resolution. There is a limit below which it can no longer tell anything apart, and faced with what does not fit that scale, it does not refine the instrument. It rounds to the nearest mark and calls the erasure a solution. The ruler rounds. The noise is what it erases.
I proved this in three territories in the first piece. The State, with the Discord shut down by decree because the law could not read what it was. The community, with the dev group that silences whoever does not fit its mold. The market, with the job that discards the brain off the curve because the position has only two marks, fits or does not fit. Three rulers, three roundings, one same mechanism under all three.
Here the ruler drops one step. It leaves the topics and lands on people, one person at a time. And when the ruler measures people, the thing it erases stops being an abstract problem on a spreadsheet. It starts having a face.
I need to be exact about what this piece is and what it is not, because the subject invites misreading before the second sentence. This is a piece about a mechanism. The mechanism is called cancellation. The three names that will show up, Monark, Léo Lins and the Rei de Orlando, are not the subject. They are evidence. I did not come to defend what any of them said, and I did not come to attack any of them. I came to show the ruler working, and to show a ruler working I need cases where it measured.
So the question that drives the text is not whether cancellation is right or wrong. That question is already the ruler disguised as debate. It forces you to pick one of the two marks and calls the choice an opinion. The real question is another one, and it is more uncomfortable. Why did we accept a word that judges wholesale what can only be understood retail?
The rest of the broadcast is the work of taking that word apart in two steps. First I separate the nature of the act, which has four marks and not one. Then I separate the nature of the penalty, which has two axes that do not even touch. Four marks of the act, two axes of penalty, three stations to tune. That is what comes next. Turn on the radio.
A régua arredonda. O ruído é o que ela apaga. The ruler rounds. The noise is what it erases. A Régua e o Ruído II · CH 01
Where the word came from *cancellation is a recent instrument, not a law of nature*
The word feels old from overuse, but it is new. To cancel, in the sense we shove onto anyone today, has a little over a decade on the road. It started as callout, the gesture of holding someone publicly to account. You pointed at what the person did, said why it was a problem, and demanded an answer. It was a verb with a target and a purpose. It had a fixed address.
Then it swelled. From callout to cancel culture was a short and costly jump. The verb lost its specific target and became an umbrella. Today everything fits under it. Boycott fits, repudiation fits, firing fits, a lawsuit fits, a tasteless bar joke fits and a crime with a prison sentence fits. One single word, stretched over things that used to have separate names and separate weights.
And that is where the problem lives, right at the origin. Boycott was not firing. Repudiation was not a lawsuit. Each old word measured one thing and knew the size of what it measured. When a new word swallows all the others, it does not get more powerful. It goes blind. It becomes the umbrella that tries to shield you from rain and sun at the same time and so serves neither one properly.
This is not some language purist griping. It is the heart of the thesis applied to vocabulary. A word that covers everything is, by definition, a low resolution ruler. Cancellation has only two marks because it only knows how to answer one question: cancelled or not. Anything that lives below that scale, any degree, any context, any difference between one case and another, it rounds away until it vanishes.
A saída dessa matéria vai depender inteira dela.
And like every recent word, cancellation can be refused. It did not fall from the sky and it was not written into the nature of things. Nobody was born obligated to split the world into the cancellable and the not cancellable. We adopted this instrument a short time ago, almost without noticing, and what gets adopted can also be handed back. Keep that idea in a pocket you can reach fast. The way out of this piece depends entirely on it.
Every different thing you shove under the same word strips a bit of its resolution. Cover everything, and it stops measuring and becomes just an alarm.
Cancelamento é um arredondamento *a régua de duas casas apontada pra uma pessoa*Cancellation is a rounding *the two-mark ruler pointed at one person*
Let me define cancellation exactly the way this piece will use it, because with this subject the definition is already half the fight. Cancellation is not a moral phenomenon, it is not popular justice and it is not debate. It is a measuring instrument, and a bad measuring instrument. It is the two-mark ruler pointed at one person.
A two-mark ruler can only say two things. Cancelled or not cancelled. Guilty or innocent. In or out. There is no middle ground on its scale, and there is none because the scale never had a mark for middle ground. So when a situation shows up that is not one extreme or the other, the ruler does what every ruler does faced with what will not fit between two lines. It shoves it to the nearest line and pretends the value was that one all along.
That is the rounding, and it is the quiet crime of the whole thing. It takes situations that are genuinely different and dumps them all onto the same point, because the nearest point is the only one the ruler can see. The person who let out an uncomfortable opinion and the person who committed a crime land on the same mark, cancelled, not because they are alike, but because the ruler has no mark between one and the other to hold the difference.
And turning up the volume does not fix it. Shouting louder does not sharpen the judgment, it only raises the background noise. That is the difference between resolution and reach that I nailed down in the first piece and that comes back now whole. A ruler does not start measuring better because you bellow the number farther. It measures better when it gains more marks. And cancellation does not want more marks. It wants reach. It wants the same crude judgment to reach more people faster.
Here this piece changes color from the first one. There the noise was the erased problem: the policy that did not fit the law, the case the ruler discarded to close the books. Here the noise has a face. What the ruler rounds out is a whole person, with context, with degree, with the enormous difference between what she actually did and what people say she did. That is the green of the broadcast now. The color of the erased became the color of someone.
É o inverso do arredondamento. Eu corto primeiro a natureza do ato. Corto depois a natureza da pena. Começo pelo ato.
So the work of the rest of the piece is easy to state and hard to do. It is the reverse of the rounding. It is taking what the word glued onto a single point and separating it back into the marks that existed before it arrived. There are two cuts, not one. I cut the nature of the act first. I cut the nature of the penalty second. I start with the act.
Two very different positions land on the same verdict. That is what the two-mark ruler erases.
As quatro casas do ato *opinião, erro, provocação e crime não são a mesma coisa*The four marks of the act *opinion, error, provocation and crime are not the same thing*
Every time someone is cancelled, the word states one thing and closes the case: this person did something condemnable. The problem is that condemnable is a deep sack, and a lot of things fit inside it that look nothing alike. I see four bottoms in that sack. Four marks the ruler mashes into one. I will name them one by one, because with this word naming is already the start of measuring.
The first mark is the uncomfortable but legitimate opinion. Someone said something that displeases, that irritates, that runs against the consensus, but that breaks no rule and no law. To bother is not to break the law. The person on the first mark did nothing more than disagree out loud, and disagreeing out loud is the price the public square charges everyone who steps into it.
The second mark is the genuine error that deserved a consequence. Here the person did something actually wrong. Not a polemical opinion, an error with weight in the world: broke a trust, caused real harm, acted in bad faith knowing what she was doing. The reaction has a basis, and the consequence here is not persecution. It is a response proportional to an error that really happened.
A terceira casa é a provocação calculada pra chocar.
The third mark is the provocation calculated to shock. On this mark the offense is not a side effect, it is the product. The person designed the line to get a reaction, found the button and pressed it on purpose. Provocation is not sincere opinion and it is not a good faith mistake. It is strategy. Whoever provokes knows precisely what will happen next and does it anyway, because the scandalized reaction is exactly the merchandise she came to buy.
The fourth mark is actual illegality. Here it left the field of speech that bothers and entered what the law already names and punishes. It is no longer a matter of taste, it is not bar table ethics, it is not a clash of values. It is a crime, with a statute, with a penalty written in text, with the State sitting at the table as an interested party. The fourth mark is not a stronger opinion than the others. It is a different nature entirely.
Agora repara no tamanho do estrago. A mesma fusão serve o linchamento e serve o acobertamento. Muda só a direção pra onde a régua aponta.
Now look at the size of the damage. These four marks call for four different responses, and the word cancelled hands one single response to all of them. That is the central trick of the vocabulary, and the worst part is that it cuts both ways. Fuse the four and you turn an uncomfortable opinion into a crime, when what you want is to destroy someone. Fuse the four and you turn a crime into mere internet drama, when what you want is to shield someone. The same fusion serves the lynching and serves the cover up. Only the direction the ruler points changes.
A quick example of each mark before I turn on the first station. Mark one: a person says she thought a film everyone loved was bad and wakes up with the mob at her door. Mark two: a boss humiliates the team for years and someone finally exposes it. Mark three: a profile posts a provocation measured to the milligram to go viral on other people's outrage. Mark four: someone commits an act the law already describes and punishes with prison. Four situations, four distinct natures. One single word stacked on top of all of them.
Separada a natureza do ato, ainda falta o segundo corte, e ele pesa tanto quanto o primeiro.
With the nature of the act separated, the second cut is still missing, and it weighs as much as the first. Because knowing what the person did says nothing yet about what should happen to her. Two people on the same mark can take penalties from completely different worlds, and that is where the next scalpel comes in. Losing your job is not going to prison. But that is the next broadcast.
Os dois eixos da pena *perder o emprego não é ir preso*The two axes of the penalty *losing your job is not going to prison*
If the first cut was into the nature of the act, the second is into the nature of the penalty. And it is easier to see, because we feel the difference in our own skin every single day. There are two axes of punishment, and the word cancelled pours both into the same bucket as if they were the same water.
O primeiro eixo é a sanção social.
The first axis is social sanction. It is losing space, losing work, losing sponsorship. It is the brand vanishing, the invitation not arriving, the name turning to poison. It is the mob at the door and the silence of the ones who used to call you. Social sanction is fast, it is collective and it asks no one for permission. It runs at the speed of the feed, and its court is anyone with a phone in hand.
O segundo eixo é a sanção do Estado.
The second axis is the State's sanction. It is answering a lawsuit, sitting in the defendant's chair, being convicted, serving a sentence. Here it is not a crowd reaction, it is the machine of the law. And the machine of the law has, or at least should have, what the mob does not: procedure, deadline, defense, appeal and a written limit on how much it can hurt. Social sanction can be cruel. State sanction can put you in prison.
Look at the asymmetry, because it is the whole point. Social sanction needs no proof and no judge. It does not read you your rights, does not give you a lawyer, has no level of appeal. It is judgment by market and by tribe, decided in the heat and carried out on the spot. State sanction is slow and formal precisely because it imprisons people, and imprisoning people is the most serious thing a society does to a citizen.
There is the danger, and it lives at both extremes at once. On one side, there are people demanding prison for an uncomfortable opinion, wanting the State to do the job the outrage could not finish. On the other, there are people treating a court conviction as if it were an internet fight, a "they cancelled the poor guy" thrown over a sentence a judge signed. Both confuse the axes. One wants to turn discomfort into a cell. The other wants to turn a cell into discomfort.
Vou ligar a primeira estação.
And that is why I chose these three names, and not others. Not because they are the worst, the most famous or the most recent. Because each one landed on a different point of the map. One took social sanction without ever seeing the courts up close. Another took the State's sanction, with a sentence and a penalty counted in years. The third took pure social sanction, carried out by a mob, in a case where neither job nor law entered the account. Three cases, two axes, four marks. The table is set. I am going to turn on the first station.
regule cada eixo pro que o caso pede, depois aperte cancelar.set each axis to what the case calls for, then press cancel.
A boycott and a lawsuit are different axes, and almost no case calls for the same degree on both. Cancel does not ask which axis: it slams both to the top at once.
Estação Monark: o nazismo que custou um emprego *sanção social sem passar pela Justiça*Station Monark: the nazism that cost a job *social sanction without going through the courts*
The act brushed the gravest mark, but the penalty stayed purely social.
First station, and I go in through it on purpose, because it is the one that scrambles the head of anyone who only has two marks the most. February 2022. Monark is recording the Flow, the podcast he built himself, with two federal deputies at the table. In the middle of the conversation, he defends that a legally recognized Nazi party should exist in Brazil. It was said. It is not a rumor, not an edited screenshot, it is on video, hours of it.
Let me map this on the ruler coldly, which is the only honest way to do it. The nature of the act brushes the fourth mark, the one for illegality, and it brushes it hard, because apology for nazism in Brazil is not a strong opinion, it is a crime, and one of the grave ones: non bailable and not subject to any statute of limitations under the Constitution. Keep that detail, because it comes back to haunt you a few topics from now.
Agora a pena. A Justiça leva anos. A demissão levou horas.
Now the penalty. Monark's punishment was one hundred percent on the social axis, and only on it. He was dropped from the Flow the next day. Sponsors cut ties with the studio. The channel lost its monetization. He was, in practice, pulled out of the place he occupied. And all of it without a single criminal proceeding for that specific line running against his person. The market acted, and it acted faster and harder than any court would in the same window. The courts take years. The firing took hours.
And notice something that happened in the heat of the moment, before any analysis as cold as mine: the reaction to Monark was born split right down the middle this piece is going to draw further on. On one side, there appeared right away the people who wanted total erasure, who treated the line as unforgivable and demanded he vanish off the map. And they got it, in under twenty four hours. On the other side, there appeared the people who flipped the switch to the opposite, who started treating him as a martyr of free speech being persecuted, and rushed to defend not what he said, but the right to have said it. The very deputies who were at the table reacted in opposite directions, one repudiating him on the spot, the other arguing that suffocating the debate would make extremism grow in the dark. Hold onto that image, because it is the whole piece happening live, before I explain anything. Nobody in the boiling heat asked which mark the line fell on or which axis the punishment hit. One side rounded Monark to cancellable and the other rounded him to persecuted, both in the same second, both with the same two-mark ruler, only pointed in opposite directions. The fight was not about the size of the fault. It was about where to point the instrument. Keep that split, because I come back to it at the end.
Was it fair? That is the question everyone wants me to answer, and it is exactly the question I refuse to answer here, because answering it would be picking the ruler back up. My job is not to grade the case. It is to show which mark and which axis it fell on. And what the ruler glued together, I separate: to repudiate the line with all your strength is one thing, to understand the mechanics of the punishment that came is another. You can do both at the same time without one canceling the other. In fact, you are required to do both, if you want to measure right.
Porque a próxima estação vai contar exatamente a história oposta.
After the episode Monark himself backed off. He said he was drunk, that he got the form wrong, that he was insensitive, and he apologized to the Jewish community. Keep that as plot, not as a mitigating factor for the thesis: his retreat changes nothing about the mechanics I am measuring. The act landed near the fourth mark. The penalty stayed entirely on the social one. Hold this image in your hand: nazism, social punishment, not a single day in a cell. Because the next station is going to tell the exact opposite story.
A coerência que o Monark pediu *separar o que ele disse do jeito que ele armou o argumento*The consistency Monark asked for *separating what he said from the way he built the argument*
Now I am going to do, in front of the reader, the hardest work in the entire piece. I am going to separate two things almost everyone insists on gluing together: what Monark said and the form in which he built what he said. Gluing the two is exactly what the ruler does. Unsticking them is the method of this text, and if it cannot hold up under the thorniest case of all, it is worth nothing for any of them.
I start with what has no possible unsticking. The content of what he defended is indefensible, full stop. A Nazi party with legal registration is the institutionalization of an ideology that preaches racial supremacy and extermination, that has already killed millions, and that Brazilian law treats as a crime for the most obvious reason in the world. There is no generous reading of the content. That is not what I came to unstick.
What I came to unstick is the form of the argument, because it is a different thing from the content it carries. What Monark built was an argument from consistency. His logic went roughly like this: if the radical left has political and legal space, the radical right would have to have it too, by the same criterion. The sharper version of that logic, the one that shows up whenever this debate heats up, is the one about the party that inherits communism: if a party tied to an ideology that also killed millions exists and is legal, then, out of pure consistency of criterion, the Nazi one would have to fit as well.
Pay attention to what I am and what I am not saying, because the difference here is everything. I am not saying he is right. I am saying that the consistency question he raised genuinely exists, and that it is a different question from the atrocity he used to raise it. You can reject the content entirely and still recognize that the criterion he demanded is not empty. That is not agreeing with him. That is exactly the demux the word cancelled forbids.
And since I do not like hiding behind analysis, let me nail down my position without softening it, in my own way. I think neither of the two should exist. Not the Nazi party, not the party that looks the other way at communist genocide. The consistent answer to the asymmetry he pointed at is not to legalize the second horror to even things out with the first. It is to refuse both. The consistency he asked for is real, and the consistent way out points to the opposite side of what he defended.
Ela arredonda torto.
And now the detail the rounding erases and that sets up the punch coming shortly. Because apology for nazism is a crime in Brazil, Monark's act was the one that brushed the fourth mark closest among the three cases in this piece. The closest to the formal crime. Hold onto that, because when I put the three side by side, you will see that it was precisely this one, the one that got nearest to the law, that took the lightest punishment. The ruler does not just round. It rounds crooked.
Estação Léo Lins: a piada que custou prisão *quando a sanção sai do social e entra no Estado*Station Léo Lins: the joke that cost prison *when the sanction leaves the social and enters the State*
A joke, a provocation mark, and the penalty fired on the state axis.
Segunda estação, e ela conta o oposto exato da primeira. Léo Lins é comediante de stand-up.
Second station, and it tells the exact opposite of the first. Léo Lins is a stand up comedian. In 2022 he recorded a show called Perturbador, the kind that makes offense the axis of the whole act, with jokes aimed at a pile of groups at once: Black people, fat people, the elderly, people with disabilities, HIV positive people, and the list goes on. The video went viral on YouTube, passed three million views, and was later taken off the platform by court order. That already tells you where the thing ended up. It did not stop at the mob. It went to the courts.
Mapping it on the ruler: the nature of the act swings between the third mark, calculated provocation, and what the courts decided to frame as a crime. Because provoking is the business model of shock comedy, nobody buys a Léo Lins ticket expecting delicacy. But the law looked at the content and said that it went past provocation and turned into something else. Where exactly the border between mark three and mark four falls in comedy is one of the most slippery questions there is, and I come back to it in the next topic, because it deserves a chapter of its own.
Now the penalty, and this is where the comparison starts to burn. Léo Lins was convicted by the 3rd Federal Criminal Court of São Paulo to eight years and three months in prison, plus a fine of more than three hundred thousand reais. This is not social sanction. It is the State's sanction, with a signed sentence, with a penalty counted in years. The judge grounded it on the jokes encouraging the spread of verbal violence and fostering intolerance against the groups hit. The defense disagrees and the decision can still be appealed, so none of this is the final period on the story. But the axis is already defined, and it is the State's axis.
A sanção social é raio. A sanção estatal é maratona.
Notice the clock too, because the timing of the two cases is part of the argument. The repudiation of Monark was instant: line on Monday, firing on Tuesday. The Léo Lins case dragged on for years between charge, hearings and sentence. Social sanction is lightning. State sanction is a marathon. One falls before you understand what happened. The other arrives when almost everyone has already forgotten.
And there was something revealing in the reaction of his peers, the other comedians, that shows the ruler's split showing up again, this time inside the profession itself. People who do the exact same craft split down the middle over the conviction. Fábio Porchat and Antônio Tabet came out against the decision, treating the penalty as unacceptable, an excess of the State over comedy. Other artists went the opposite direction and defended the conviction. Reaction even came from outside Brazil, with that Portuguese comedian calling the penalty grotesque, which I already brought up in the previous chapter. Notice what that means: not even the people who get on stage and live off jokes could reach a common verdict. And it is not because some are softies and others are hardliners. It is because the question of where provocation ends and crime begins has no two-mark answer, and each one rounded toward the side he was already inclined to defend. And there is still a detail the rush of the debate tends to forget: this decision is not the end. The defense disagrees and the case can still be appealed, which means that legally it is still open. But the social ruler had already brought its hammer down long before the State brought its down for good. The mob convicts before the sentence is final, and then does not even wait to see if it becomes final.
Should a joke fit the fourth mark? I did not come here to bring the hammer down on that question, I came to show that it is a real question and not a slogan. Some people find it obvious that yes and some find it obvious that no, and the system itself, you will see, could not decide. For now, hold the image next to the other one: joke, State punishment, possible years in prison. Next to nazism, social punishment, not a single day in a cell. Keep that pair. It is the one the punch comes with.
Nazismo, punição social, nenhum dia de cadeia. Piada, punição estatal, anos de prisão.Nazism, social punishment, not a day in a cell. A joke, state punishment, years in prison. A Régua e o Ruído II · CH 08
Animus jocandi: a intenção de rir descriminaliza? *o eixo do Estado testado no seu ponto mais frágil*Animus jocandi: does the intent to make people laugh decriminalize? *the State's axis tested at its most fragile point*
A intenção descaracterizaria o tipo penal.
I promised a chapter just for this question and here it is, because the border between mark three and mark four in comedy is where the State's axis shows the loosest seam. Léo Lins's defense bet on a concept with a Latin name: animus jocandi, the intent to jest. The thesis is simple to state. If the intent was to make people laugh, and not to incite, then that would not be a crime, it would be a joke, and a joke is not judged the way a serious hate speech is judged. The intent would strip away the criminal offense.
A Justiça rejeitou o argumento.
The courts rejected the argument. They held that the intent to pull a laugh did not erase the effect or the framing, that the result there went beyond the intent to jest. You can agree or disagree with that reading, and serious people disagree on both sides. But what interests me is not bringing the hammer down on who is right. It is showing something deeper that the case lays bare.
The system itself does not know where the joke falls. And I am not using that as a figure of speech. Before this conviction, the Supreme Federal Court had already overturned a decision that criminalized Léo Lins's speech, on the argument that the audience at a comedy show goes there precisely expecting content that offends. Later, a federal criminal court convicted him. That is to say: the highest court in the country said that it should not be a crime, another court said it was and ordered a prison term. The State's ruler, the one with procedure and defense and appeal, contradicted itself over which mark the same joke lives on.
That is the entire thesis showing up in the least likely place. If not even the State, with all its apparatus, has enough marks to decide firmly where provocation ends and crime begins, imagine the mob, which decides that in fifteen seconds and with no level of appeal at all. Resolution is not only a problem for whoever shouts on the feed. It is a problem for whoever wears a robe too.
And there is a logical test that lays the bone bare. If the joke is a crime because of the effect it causes, then whoever laughed was an accomplice to the effect, and by the same logic the whole audience would have to answer along with him. That is more or less what the Portuguese comedian Ricardo Araújo Pereira pointed at, when he called the penalty grotesque and joked that whoever laughed should also serve time. It is a reductio, of course, nobody is going to prosecute the audience. But it serves to light up the absurdity of treating the reaction to speech as if it were the punishable act itself.
Now pay attention so I am not misread. Recognizing that the border is fragile is not the same as saying that any joke goes and nothing has a consequence. Mark three genuinely exists, and calculated provocation can indeed cross into mark four in some cases. What I am nailing down is more modest and more uncomfortable: where exactly that border sits is a genuinely hard question, and a two-mark word will never be the right instrument to answer it. Keep that hole in the State's ruler. The third station is going to show the mob's ruler, where neither robe nor job enters, only the pointed finger.
o caso: a mesma piada do show, levada à Justiça.the case: the same stand-up bit, taken to court.
The Supreme Court struck down the charge; a federal court convicted and ordered prison. The same speech, the same State, in opposite marks. If not even the ruler with due process and appeals knows where the joke falls, imagine the mob's.
Estação Rei de Orlando: a provocação que a turba derrubou *sanção social pura e a régua agora medindo raça*Station Rei de Orlando: the provocation the mob took down *pure social sanction and the ruler now measuring race*
Provocação pura, pena social pura, e virou meme de incancelável.Pure provocation, a purely social penalty, and it became an uncancellable meme.
Third station, and it is the newest of the three, red hot, the kind that was still unfolding as I wrote. The Rei de Orlando is an influencer. He posted a video saying, in a mocking tone, that for him it is an honor not to be Black, that he loves being white. And here the context is the whole thing: his line was an ironic response to an earlier video, of a Black woman saying that what she likes most is not being white. He took the structure of her sentence and flipped the color. The video blew up, passed millions of views, and split the internet down the middle.
Mapping it on the ruler: the nature of the act sits on the third mark, calculated provocation, no shadow of a doubt. He measured the button and pressed it. And the punishment was social sanction in a pure state, without a drop of State or of formal employment. Fans of Anitta and of BTS, two of the most organized fandoms there are, banded together and took his account down. There was no lawsuit, no judge, no firing. There was a mob, coordination and a profile on the floor. It is the tribe's ruler working in the rawest form there is.
A mesma frase, invertida a cor, dividiu a leitura no meio.
Except this case opens a front the other two did not have. Here the ruler is not measuring political side, like with Monark, nor stage comedy, like with Léo Lins. It is measuring race, and the question hovering over all of it is who gets to say what. The original video, from the Black woman, was read by some as legitimate and by others as the same kind of line. His video was read by some as flagrant racism and by others as just a provocation mirroring the discourse that came before. The same sentence, color flipped, split the reading down the middle. And the two-mark ruler has no way to hold that nuance, because it only knows how to say cancelled or not.
And here there is a symmetry worth pulling apart, because it is the knot of the case. The two lines, the Black woman's and his, had the same structure: liking yourself for not being the other. He copied the form and swapped the color, letter for letter. And that is where the ruler jams, because the same structure got opposite readings depending on who was speaking. For part of the internet, the first line was legitimate pride and the second was flagrant racism, full stop. For another part, if one was acceptable the other had to be too, by the same consistency we saw in Monark's case, and if one was racism the other was too. Look, nobody needs to agree with either side to see the mechanical problem: the two-mark ruler has no way to process the sentence "the same structure changes marks depending on who says it". Either it treats the two exactly alike, and then it ignores all the context of who historically carries what, or it treats the two differently, and then it needs a fine criterion it has no mark at all to hold. Both simplistic exits break in your hand. That is why race, on the ruler of cancellation, is precisely the axis where low resolution hurts the most: it is where context and history weigh the most, and the ruler is exactly the instrument where context and history fit the least. It is not that the answer is easy and the mob just got the math wrong. It is that the answer is genuinely hard, and the ruler pretended it was easy. And this is the most recent of the three cases, the one that was still happening while I wrote. The ruler on right now, live, measuring race in real time.
Notice that the mechanics are identical to the other stations, only the axis changed. The rounding does not care about the subject. It works the same when the matter is ideology and when the matter is identity. It takes the situation full of context, of intent, of who spoke first and about what, and mashes it all into one mark. Provocation and legitimate opinion become the same thing in the ruler's eyes, even though they are different marks, because the instrument has no mark to tell one from the other.
And next to Monark the contrast is fine and important. Both took social sanction, both on the same axis. But the size of the fault and the size of the reaction do not line up: one defended legalizing a genocidal ideology, the other made a social media provocation. Marks of different gravity, same axis of punishment. The ruler does not know how to weigh that. To it, cancelled is cancelled.
Pronto. Sanção social, sanção do Estado, sanção social pura.
There. Three stations lit at the same time now: Monark, Léo Lins and the Rei de Orlando. Social sanction, State sanction, pure social sanction. It is time to take the three out of isolation and put the three on the same bench, side by side. Because it is only there that the real scandal shows up. Not the scandal of each separate case. The scandal of the comparison between them.
Nazismo custou emprego, piada custou cadeia *os três lado a lado e o escândalo de escala*Nazism cost a job, a joke cost a cell *the three side by side and the scandal of scale*
Chegou o momento pra onde tudo apontava.
The moment everything was pointing to has arrived. Three stations on the same bench. Monark, who defended a Nazi party and lost his job. Léo Lins, who told stage jokes and was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison. The Rei de Orlando, who made a social media provocation and had his account taken down by the mob. Now look at the three together and tell me if you feel what I feel.
The scandal fits in one sentence. Defending the existence of a Nazi party cost a job. A joke cost possible years in a cell. And the same word, cancelled, was used to describe all three as if they were the same kind of event.
And there is an aggravating factor that makes the scandal even worse, the detail I told you to keep back there. Among the three acts, Monark's was the one that brushed the formal crime closest, because apology for nazism is a non bailable crime in Brazil. It was the case nearest the fourth mark. And it was precisely that one that took the lightest punishment of the three in terms of the State: none. Meanwhile, the joke, which lives on the murky border between mark three and mark four, took the harshest penalty, prison. The gravity of the act and the weight of the punishment ran in opposite directions. Whoever got closest to the law suffered least from the law. Whoever was in the grayest zone took the harshest blow from it.
This is the moment the demux proves what it is for. While the three cases were glued to the same word, that absurdity of proportion stayed invisible. Everyone cancelled, everyone in the same sack, discussion closed. It took separating two things, the nature of the act and the axis of the penalty, for the disproportion to leap to the eyes. The ruler was hiding the scandal precisely by having no mark for it.
And I want to be fair to the ruler, because it does not do this out of malice. It is not cruel. It is dumb. It did not choose to punish the less grave more, it simply has no resolution to notice it was doing that. A two-mark ruler cannot see disproportion, the same way a ruler with no millimeters cannot see the difference between two centimeters and two and a half. The error is not one of character. It is one of scale.
But the practical effect is devastating, even with no malice in the middle of it. When everything becomes cancellation, nobody can discuss proportion anymore. The conversation about whether the punishment fit the act disappears, because the word already decided that only two answers are possible. And that is why the public debate about these cases goes in circles: people are fighting inside a ruler that has no mark where the real discussion would live.
It is the same rounding from the first piece, now with a first and last name. There it was the Discord shut down by decree, an entire technology erased because the law had only two marks. Here it is three people measured by the same blind instrument, each one thrown to the wrong mark. The ruler did not change. It only came down from the problem to people.
And if you think the worst of the ruler is the cruelty, hold on tight, because there is something that might be worse: sometimes it does not even work.
A proportional system would put all three on the line. What happened was different: the gravest act drew the lightest punishment, and a joke drew years in prison.
Ela não é perversa. Ela é burra. It is not cruel. It is dumb. A Régua e o Ruído II · CH 11
Quando a régua falha: o incancelável *o instrumento não é só cruel, muitas vezes nem funciona*When the ruler fails: the uncancellable *the instrument is not only cruel, it often does not even work*
A turba derrubou a conta dele, executou a sentença social direitinho. E o que aconteceu depois? Ele virou meme.
Go back to the Rei de Orlando for a moment. The mob took his account down, carried out the social sentence just fine. And what happened next? He became a meme. On top of the case itself, the joke was born that the Rei de Orlando is uncancellable. The attempt to erase did not erase. It handed over ammunition, handed over a stage and handed over a martyr narrative for free. Cancellation, which was supposed to be the end of the line, became the start of a new character.
This is not an isolated accident, it is a pattern. Look at Monark again. He was demonetized, lost his channel, was pulled off YouTube. And he rebuilt an audience on another platform, set up another project, went on talking to an audience that cancellation not only did not destroy but may have helped consolidate, under the banner of the persecuted. The erasure did not erase. It changed the broadcast's address and stayed on the air.
Here the structural failure of social sanction shows up, and it is different from the cruelty. Social sanction has no off button. It does not know how to close. That is why it swings between two equally bad extremes: either it becomes eternal punishment, a name that never clears again no matter how much time passes and context changes, or it becomes no punishment at all, a scandal that in two weeks is already a meme and an audience. There is no dose in between. It is perpetual or it is a boomerang.
And there is the paradox that should bother whoever defends cancellation as a tool. The same ruler that destroys one person turns another into a martyr, and the two things happen inside the same movement, with the same mob, pressing the same button. There is no telling which of the two will come out. It depends on the fandom, on the moment, on luck, on who had an audience stashed away to turn into a cheering section. That is not justice. Justice has criteria and has an expectable result. That is a lottery with the face of a court.
Why does it fail like this? For the same reason it is unjust: no procedure, no proportion, no closure. The State's sanction, with all its slowness, at least has a beginning, a middle and an end: charge, defense, sentence, service, and a final period. Social sanction has none of these. It starts at any hour, hears no defense, has no written sentence and never really ends. An instrument with no beginning and no end does not punish reliably. It only rattles.
And that is what almost nobody measures. Whoever raises the ruler and defends cancellation as a way to do right rarely stops to ask whether it delivers what it promises. It promises accountability and sometimes delivers martyrdom. It promises justice and delivers a raffle. The tool is not only cruel when it hits. It is inconstant even in the hit.
Which brings me to the question that closes this arc. If the ruler is unpredictable on both sides, if it neither punishes right nor manages to erase right, then why do so many people insist on gripping it so hard? The answer is not in the ruler. It is in whoever holds it, and in the two sides that fight over it. That is where the broadcast goes now.
Aperte pra derrubar o alcance do alvo. Press to bring the target down. But there is a point, invisible until you cross it, where the same press makes the reach climb. It is the ruler making a martyr with the button that used to erase.
Both sides hold the same ruler *cancelling in bulk and attacking in bulk are the same blind instrument*
End of the stations arc, start of the way out arc. And the way out opens with a turn that bothers everyone, both sides at once. There are two camps fighting over cancellation. On one side, those who defend cancellation as a tool of justice, who think that exposing and taking down is how the world fixes what is wrong. On the other, those who attack cancellation, who see in every case a persecution, a mob of coddled brats destroying whoever thinks differently. The two camps hate each other. And the two hold exactly the same ruler.
Let me prove it, because it is the piece that closes the case. The camp that defends cancellation uses the two-mark ruler: it takes the person and asks only one thing, did she do something condemnable or not, and if she did, it rounds to cancellable and presses the button. It does not tell mark one from mark four, does not separate social sanction from State sanction, does not weigh proportion. Cancellable is cancellable. The camp that attacks cancellation uses the very same ruler, only flipped to the other side: it takes the person and asks whether she is being attacked by the mob, and if she is, it rounds to persecuted and rushes to the defense, without looking at what she did. Persecuted is persecuted. One side sees cancellable in everyone. The other sees a victim in everyone. Both have only two marks.
Look at how concrete this gets. The pro cancellation camp takes a mark one opinion, someone who only disagreed out loud without breaking any rule, and treats it as if it were mark four: demands firing, a lawsuit, the end of a career, for someone who committed no offense. The anti cancellation camp does the symmetric reverse: it takes a mark four crime, someone the courts actually convicted, and treats it as if it were mark one, that "poor guy, they just gave a little opinion", for someone who was convicted. The two err in the same direction. The two collapse four marks into one. They only change which mark they pick as the destination of the collapse.
And the most perverse part: the two feed each other. Every lynching by the first camp becomes proof to the second that persecution is underway. Every blind defense by the second becomes proof to the first that the guilty always get away. They fight, but they hold each other up, because each is the other's excuse to grip the ruler even harder. It is not a war between ruler and no ruler. It is a war between two hands fighting over the same ruler.
Notice what neither of them wants. Neither of them wants more marks. Neither of them wants a ruler that tells Monark from the Rei de Orlando, that separates the joke from the nazism, that measures proportion. Because a ruler with more marks would get in the way of both at once. It would block the easy lynching on one side and the easy victimhood on the other. Both prefer the blind instrument, as long as it is pointed at the right enemy. They are not fighting over resolution. They are fighting over where to aim.
And that is why that question from the beginning, whether cancellation is right or wrong, is a trap. It is not a debate. It is the ruler disguising itself as a debate. It forces you to choose between defending in bulk and attacking in bulk, between the two only marks it offers, and it calls that forced choice a formed opinion. But choosing which side of the blind ruler you will hold is not having an opinion. It is accepting the wrong instrument and arguing only over where to point it.
Divergem no veredito e concordam no método. E o método é o problema.
The real question stays the same one I asked at the opening, and now it weighs more. Why did we accept a word that judges wholesale what can only be understood retail? Both sides accepted it. The one that defends and the one that attacks, both bought the idea that you can judge people wholesale, that there is a single answer for the whole box. They diverge on the verdict and agree on the method. And the method is the problem.
É largar a régua e pegar outro instrumento. É disso que os próximos capítulos tratam.
Here the last image I brought from the first Ruler comes back, the one of the map and the compass. Both camps are reading a map. A map only has the colors that came printed on it: cancellable on one side, persecuted on the other, and nothing between the two. Whoever reads a map never sees the direction the legend did not predict. And a person is always a direction the legend did not predict. The way out of this piece is not to pick the right color on the map. It is to trade the map for the compass. It is to drop the ruler and pick up another instrument. That is what the next chapters are about.
One side sees cancellable in everyone, the other sees persecuted in everyone. Change the case: the side's verdict does not budge. It is the same two-mark ruler, just aimed at the other pole.
Medir melhor em vez de medir menos *como sair do arredondamento sem fingir que nada aconteceu*Measure better instead of measuring less *how to get out of the rounding without pretending nothing happened*
Here is the point that separates this piece from two things it is not. It is not a pro cancellation manifesto and it is not an anti cancellation manifesto. If you got this far expecting me to pick one of the two sides of the ruler, I am truly sorry. What I am going to defend is dropping the ruler.
In the first piece I nailed down the difference between refining and erasing, and it comes back now whole, because it is the key to the way out. Faced with what does not fit the scale, the ruler erases. It measures less so it does not have to measure better. And the temptation, when we see the damage of cancellation, is to erase the other way: to stop judging, to let everything slide, to decree that nobody can say anything about anybody. That is erasing too. It is the same laziness, only with the flag swapped. The way out was never to measure less. The way out was always to measure better.
To measure a person better means one concrete and laborious thing: to judge case by case, retail, separating the four marks of the act and the two axes of the penalty. It means asking, before pressing any button, which mark it falls on. Is it an uncomfortable opinion or is it a crime? Is it calculated provocation or is it a good faith mistake? And then, separately, asking which axis of response fits. Is this a matter for the market or for the courts? Does this call for a hard conversation, a boycott, a firing, or does this call for a lawsuit? Four marks, two axes, one person at a time. That is the compass in place of the ruler.
Viu? Quatro caminhos diferentes pra quatro casas diferentes. A régua daria um só pros quatro.
Take any case and measure it retail with me, so you see it is no seven headed beast. Someone posted something that irritated a lot of people. First question: which mark? If it was an opinion that breaks no rule, it is mark one, and the proportional response is to disagree back, to argue, at most to unfollow. It is not to end the person's life. If it was real harm to someone, it is mark two, and there a consequence does fit, but the size of the harm, not the size of the outrage. If it was a provocation designed to shock, it is mark three, and the most effective response is usually to not even hand over the engagement the person came looking for, because the punishment she wants is the attention. If it was a crime, it is mark four, and the path is the courts, with procedure, not the mob, in a hurry. See it? Four different paths for four different marks. The ruler would give one single path for the four.
A punição precisa caber no ato e cair no eixo certo. Sanção social pra quem cometeu falta social.
And the heart of all this has a name: proportion. The punishment has to fit the act and land on the right axis. Social sanction for whoever committed a social fault. Justice for whoever committed a crime. And dose, always dose, a response whose size matches the size of the fault, and not the same button of total destruction for anything that bothers. Proportion is not a cowardly middle ground. It is the opposite of cowardice. Rounding is the easy way out, the lazy gesture of whoever does not want to think about the specific case. Measuring with proportion is far more work, because it forces you to look at each situation whole instead of dumping them all onto the same point.
A medição boa é lenta.
And here lives the reason the ruler wins so much, despite being so bad. It is fast and it is comfortable. The feed rewards the instant reaction, the fifteen second judgment, the button pressed before you understand the case. Good measurement is slow. It demands time, context, the patience to separate what the word glued together. Speed and accuracy pull in opposite directions, and the ruler delivers speed. That is why it wins. Not because it is good, but because it is easy, and the easy always has the bigger audience.
Except when it comes time to defend measuring better, two fears show up, one from each side, to freeze you. The fear that separating means acquitting. And the fear that separating means persecuting. I need to take both apart before I hand you the compass. That is the next chapter.
Não é bicho de sete cabeças. Duas perguntas, casa e eixo, e a resposta proporcional cai sozinha. É a bússola no lugar da régua. It is not rocket science. Two questions, mark and axis, and the proportional response falls out on its own. It is the compass in place of the ruler.
Separar não é inocentar nem perseguir *os dois medos que travam quem tenta medir melhor*Separating is not acquitting or persecuting *the two fears that freeze whoever tries to measure better*
Everyone who tries to measure better runs into two fears, one from each camp, and both are built to push you back toward the ruler. I am going to disarm both, one at a time.
The first fear comes from those who defend cancellation: if you start separating the marks, you will end up acquitting people who screwed up. False. Separating is not acquitting. Mark two exists precisely for that: a genuine error deserves a consequence, and it keeps deserving one after I separate. Telling opinion from crime does not erase the crime, quite the opposite, it makes the crime show up sharply instead of dissolving in the same broth as everything else. Whoever wants real accountability should want more resolution, not less. Because on a two-mark ruler the truly guilty person blends in among the wronged and uses the mess as a shield. It is the lack of resolution that protects whoever did the worst.
The second fear comes from those who attack cancellation: if you start admitting that legitimate punishment exists, you will hand ammunition to persecution. Also false. Separating is not persecuting. Mark one exists precisely for that: an uncomfortable opinion does not become a crime just because it bothered someone. Telling provocation from sincere opinion protects whoever only disagreed out loud, instead of throwing that person into the same sack as whoever actually committed an offense. Whoever fears persecution should want more marks, not fewer, because it is the two-mark ruler that turns disagreement into a crime with a single rounding.
Sacou o pulo?
See the trick? The demux does not serve one side. It serves both. It protects the innocent and holds the guilty accountable, each at the right measure, and that is why both camps fear it. Because it takes from each side its favorite weapon: it takes the easy lynching from the first, it takes the easy victimhood from the second.
Let me show this working, on the three cases, with no cowardice at all. On Monark: you can repudiate his line with all your strength, find it abject, and still ask whether the mechanics of the punishment made sense, and still nail down that neither of the two parties should exist. The three things fit together in the same head. On Léo Lins: you can find the jokes horrible, unfunny, cruel, and still ask whether eight years and three months in prison is really the right mark for that, without the second question canceling the first. On the Rei de Orlando: you can see the provocation as calculated provocation, without endorsing either his line or the mob that took him down, without rooting for any side. On none of the three did I have to choose between the two marks of the ruler. On all three I used more marks.
A outra é trabalho.
And I will get ahead of the accusation that always comes, the one that this is sitting on the fence, the famous "both sides". It is not. Lukewarm neutrality is judging nothing, is saying it makes no difference, is running from an opinion. I am doing the opposite of that. Separating the marks is having a precise opinion about each layer instead of a coarse opinion thrown over the whole block. Whoever sits on the fence refuses to measure. I am measuring more, not less. The difference between neutrality and precision is the difference between not picking up the ruler and trading the ruler for a better instrument. One is a flight. The other is work.
A bússola.
One last tool is missing, and it is the most beautiful of the ones I brought from the first piece. The compass.
Absolving drops both together. Persecuting maxes the penalty without measuring the act. Separating is the only one that condemns hard AND responds in proportion: the two unglued from each other.
A bússola: ler quem não cabe na legenda *a pessoa fora da curva do rótulo*The compass: reading whoever does not fit the legend *the person off the curve of the label*
A bússola faz o oposto.
The compass is the last image from the first Ruler, and it is the one that closes this whole arc. The difference between a map and a compass is the difference between two ways of orienting yourself in the world. The map only has what already came printed on it. The colors, the borders, the legends, all decided before you arrived. If the territory changed, if a path showed up that the cartographer did not predict, the map does not help you, it corrects you back into what it already knew. The compass does the opposite. It does not tell you what exists. It accepts any direction, including the one no legend predicted, and just points to where north is.
Apply that to people. The label cancelled is the map. It has two colors printed on it, cancellable and not cancellable, and it tries to fit every person into one of the two. The concrete person, with her context, the degree of her fault, the difference between what she did and what people say she did, is always a direction the legend did not predict. Because nobody fits whole into two marks. Nobody is only cancellable or only persecuted. Reading the person retail, with a compass, is accepting that from the start: that each case is going to point to a place the map had not marked, and that the work is to follow the real direction, not to force the person into the nearest color.
E aqui a bússola faz aquilo que a régua tinha desfeito. Lembra do verde do ruído, a cor do apagado? A bússola é o que devolve rosto pra ele. Onde a régua amassava a pessoa numa marca e descartava o resto, a bússola recupera o resto: o contexto, a intenção, o tamanho, a diferença.
And here the compass does what the ruler had undone. Remember the green of the noise, the color of the erased? The compass is what gives the face back to it. Where the ruler mashed the person into a mark and discarded the rest, the compass recovers the rest: the context, the intent, the size, the difference. It does not erase the person to close the books. It reads the whole person, and that is why it measures better.
Let me say something closer up now, without turning it into a sermon. Whoever has been rounded off by a label once in their life knows the exact size of what gets lost in that rounding. They know what it is to be thrown into the nearest mark, the one that is not quite you, because the instrument of whoever was measuring had no mark for what you actually were. Everyone who has ever been read halfway, by the easy version of themselves, understands in their skin why one more mark matters so much. It is not an abstraction to me. It is the difference between being measured and being erased.
And I need to be exact about one thing, so the compass does not become anyone's excuse. To understand is not to acquit. The compass points a direction, it does not look the other way. Reading the whole person does not mean that every person comes out innocent in the end, it means that the verdict, whatever it is, will have been drawn from the real case and not from the label. Sometimes the compass will point to a hard consequence, to the error that deserved a response, to the crime that needs the courts. It measures better, and measuring better sometimes convicts. The compass is not indulgence. It is precision with a direction.
A bússola te obriga a olhar.
And that is exactly why the compass bothers more than the ruler. The ruler hands you the verdict ready, packaged, fast, that comfort of already knowing the answer before you look at the case. The compass forces you to look. It does not hand over a conclusion for free, it hands over a direction and the work of walking it. Trading the ruler for the compass is a project, not a comfort. It is work, it is slow, it does not generate engagement and it does not fit into a fifteen second outrage post. It is the opposite of everything the public square rewards. But it is the only way to measure people without erasing people. And this is where the broadcast begins to sign off.
The map has only two printed colors and forces the person into the nearest one. The compass accepts a direction no legend predicted, and gives a face back to what the ruler had erased.
A bússola não é indulgência. É precisão com direção.The compass is not indulgence. It is precision with a direction. A Régua e o Ruído II · CH 16
As próximas medições *o que a régua ainda vai descer pra medir*The next measurements *what the ruler will still come down to measure*
The whole thesis in one sentence, now that you have crossed the piece with it in hand: cancellation is the two-mark ruler pointed at people, one by one.
That was the route. We assembled the instrument: a recent word that became an umbrella and lost its resolution along the way. We separated the nature of the act into four marks, opinion, error, provocation, crime. We separated the nature of the penalty into two axes, the social and the State's. We tuned three stations: Monark, who defended nazism and lost his job; Léo Lins, who told jokes and was sentenced to prison; the Rei de Orlando, who provoked and had his account taken down. We put the three on the same bench and saw the scandal of scale, the one least punished by the law being precisely the one that brushed it closest. We found out that the ruler does not always work, that it manufactures the uncancellable and the martyr by pressing the same button. And we saw that the two sides fighting over cancellation hold the same blind instrument, only pointed in opposite directions. The way out was not to pick a side. It was to trade the ruler for the compass, to measure better instead of measuring less, to read each person retail.
Now the instrument is yours. Next time you read on your timeline that so and so was cancelled, do the exercise, it is fast once it becomes a habit. Ask which mark the act falls on. Opinion, error, provocation or crime? And ask which axis the penalty hit. Social or the State's? Was it proportional, or did the ruler round crooked again? You will notice that, most of the time, the word cancelled was hiding four questions under one single answer. And that the four almost never gave the same result.
Things were left out, and on purpose. The ruler still has places to come down to. It can measure humor, and then the question becomes what art can say without being prosecuted for saying it. It can measure people's past, and then it judges who someone was ten years ago using today's legend. It can measure memory itself, rounding what we were into what we became. Those are the next measurements, and they could become a part three, if you want to keep going with me on this frequency.
Repara na linhagem que se formou. A primeira Régua mediu problemas: o Discord, a comunidade, o emprego.
Notice the lineage that formed. The first Ruler measured problems: the Discord, the community, the job. This one measured people: Monark, Léo Lins, the Rei de Orlando. The next one maybe measures memory, the most slippery of all, because there the ruler does not measure what the person did, it measures who she was. Same instrument, targets going ever deeper.
And, so no doubt is left at the close: I did not defend any of them. I did not come to save Monark, I did not come to acquit Léo Lins, I did not come to root for the Rei de Orlando. I defended resolution. I defended that people deserve to be measured with more than two marks, because people do not fit into two marks, they never did. A word with no edges measures nothing. It only validates.
A estática volta agora.
The static comes back now. The needle slides out of the station, the signal dissolves into the background noise, and the amber of the broadcast fades out slowly. The ruler stays on the table, the way it always was, waiting for the next hand. The question is whether, next time, it will be your hand reaching for the ruler. Or the compass.
Beyond Patterns. Mesma linhagem, mesmo instrumento sendo questionado. Até a próxima medição.
Beyond Patterns. Same lineage, same instrument being questioned. Until the next measurement.
The instrument is yours now. Ask which mark the act falls in, which axis the penalty hit, and whether the reaction matched the act or the ruler rounded crooked again.
