Two sexes, N paths · and why this is not a contradiction

A estrutura é binária.

O destino permanece dentro do eixo binário.

The biological binary is real, and its reality does not depend on political position to be verified: it is inscribed in the most basic mechanisms of sexual reproduction and preceded humanity by hundreds of millions of years of evolution. At the same time, the path between the genetic starting point and the final phenotype is traversed by a complexity that conservative common sense systematically underestimates. These two claims do not contradict each other. The confusion between structure and path is the central error that both the right and the left commit, in opposite directions, with symmetrical consequences.

Sex hormones operate along two main functional axes: the androgenic, dominated by testosterone and its active metabolites, particularly dihydrotestosterone, produced by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, and the estrogenic, dominated by estradiol and progesterone. These two axes are not mere cultural categories: they organize embryonic development, gonadal differentiation, puberty, and the neural circuits that process social behavior, aggression, spatial cognition, and stress response, among dozens of other measurable parameters. There is no documented third hormonal axis organizing an alternative sexual development: the endocrinological spectrum is not an arc of infinitely independent categories, but a gradient between two functional poles with distinct molecular mechanisms, specific receptors, and separate signaling pathways. Gametes reinforce the same point with even more precision: sperm and eggs, with no third functional category in any sexually reproducing species. The binary is not a social construction, it is a biological structure that evolution tested and maintained because it is functionally robust.

Understanding this precisely requires, however, distinguishing structure from path, and this is where public debate tends to collapse into two symmetrical errors. The structure is binary. The path between genetic starting point and final phenotype is traversed by a cascade of events (gene expression, uterine hormonal environment, receptor sensitivity, epigenetic events, tissue interactions) that can be interrupted, diverted, or modified at any stage, producing a variation of phenotypes that does not fit the two simple archetypes that common sense uses. This does not create a third sex. It creates alternative paths within the same binary structure.

All paths of Differences of Sex Development result in phenotypes that resolve between the male and female poles, never outside them, never beyond them. A person with 5-alpha-reductase deficiency may be born with ambiguous genitalia, raised as a girl in cultures that don't recognize the condition, and virilize at puberty when testosterone takes direct effect without needing conversion to DHT: the destination is masculinization, within the androgenic axis, not a third pole. A person with Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome has an XY karyotype and undescended testes, but the androgen receptors don't respond to testosterone: the result is complete female phenotypic development, within the estrogenic axis. Klinefelter Syndrome (XXY) produces an organism with testes, reduced testosterone, and partial feminization, but within the male pole, not beyond it. In every case, the variation occurs in the path. The destination remains within the binary axis.

Jung presupposes the binary as a fundamental archetypal structure, and not by accident. Anima and Animus exist as concepts precisely because there are two poles between which the psyche organizes itself: the feminine and masculine principles as psychic forces present in every human being in proportions that vary but never completely eliminate the opposite pole. Jungian individuation is not the suppression of one pole in favor of the other, it is the conscious integration of both. This model presupposes the reality of both poles as a condition for integration to make sense. A system with infinite poles does not allow individuation, it allows only dispersion. The binary structure is not the ceiling of Jungian psychology. It is the scaffolding without which it cannot stand.

What varies infinitely is not the structure, it is the path. Biological developmental variation, psychological individuation, cultural expression of the masculine and feminine, lived identity, the way each concrete organism inhabits its body and navigates its position on the axis: all of this happens within the axis, with a richness of variation that no naive binarism captures, but not beyond the axis, not as evidence that the poles don't exist.

A musical scale has twelve semitones. Musical compositions have virtually infinite variation. The infinity of compositions doesn't prove the scale doesn't exist, it proves the structure is fertile enough to produce infinite variation within itself.

The sexual binary is analogous: fertile enough to produce the phenotypic, psychological, and expressive variation we observe in human populations, without needing to be abandoned for that variation to be recognized.

This position is simultaneously more rigorous than the right and more honest than the left, and the fact that it bothers both sides is precisely the sign that it's closer to reality than either tribal alternative. The right denies that path variations exist: treats the binary as if it were simple, as if every XX chromosome invariably produced an identical female phenotype and every XY an identical male phenotype, as if DSDs were fabrications, as if documented endocrinological complexity were an agenda. This is denial of biology in the name of biology, the same epistemological operation it criticizes in the left, executed in the mirror. The left uses path variations to deny that the structure exists: treats the existence of intermediate phenotypes as proof that the poles are constructions, as if the existence of shades of gray proved that black and white don't exist as distinct physical categories. This is equally a denial of biology, with different vocabulary and different motivation, but with the same refusal to follow the data where it actually leads.

The variations prove the path is complex. They don't prove there's no destination. And recognizing this, with the precision the data demands, without the comfort of the simplification the tribe offers, is what allows having a position on sex and gender that reality can, in principle, verify. Which is the minimum definition of any position that deserves to be called scientific.

Differences of Sex Development (DSD) affect approximately 1 in 100 people by conservative estimates, and about 1.7% of the population when all documented phenotypic variations are included, data systematized by Anne Fausto-Sterling and widely cited in developmental endocrinology literature.

This number is relevant because it dismantles two symmetrical arguments at once: it is large enough to make DSDs impossible to dismiss as "statistically irrelevant exceptions" (right-wing version), and specific enough not to support the claim that path variations constitute evidence of an open, non-binary spectrum of sexes (left-wing version). 1.7% path variation is not evidence of absence of structure, it is evidence that the structure is biologically complex, not that it doesn't exist.

Jung and the binary the left never read

Carl Jung developed the concepts of Anima and Animus as contrasexual archetypes: the unconscious feminine present in the male psyche, the unconscious masculine present in the female psyche. The word "contrasexual" is not decorative: it carries the entire structure of the argument. For something to be contra-sexual, there must exist a base sex of which it represents the complement. The prefix presupposes the existence of the pole it complements. Without the binary, there is no contrasexual: the concepts self-dissolve if the premise that grounds them is removed. It is not possible to retain Jung's analytical psychology while abandoning the binary upon which it is built: it's like trying to maintain the notion of shadow while denying that light exists.

The origin of archetypes in Jung is not cultural, it is phylogenetic. Archetypes are not constructions that each society invents anew; they are structures inherited from the collective unconscious, sedimented over generations of common human experience. The masculine-feminine binary as an archetypal structure appears in all documented cultures, in all comparative mythologies, in all symbolic systems that Jung and his successors studied, not because all cultures received the same social conditioning, but because all start from the same psychic substrate. When analytical psychology and evolutionary biology independently arrive at the same binary structure, this is not ideological coincidence, it is convergence of different methods on the same phenomenon. Biology arrived through the hormonal and gametic axis. Analytical psychology arrived through the collective unconscious and comparative mythology. The fact that they arrive at the same place strengthens, not weakens, the conclusion.

Jungian individuation is not the suppression of one pole in favor of the other, it is the conscious integration of both. A woman who deeply integrates her Animus does not dissolve her femininity into something neutral: she becomes a woman with full access to the masculine dimension of her own psyche, to assertiveness, to structured thought, to the impulse of individuation that Jung associated with the masculine principle, which makes her more complete, not ambiguous. A man who integrates his Anima does not stop being a man: he gains access to empathy, to affective fluidity, to connection with the unconscious process that Jung associated with the feminine principle. Integration expands the psyche within the poles. It does not create a third.

The existence of both archetypes does not dissolve the binary, it confirms it as a fundamental psychic structure identified independently of biology. And the Jungian individuation process, the path of psychological development toward the complete Self, is exactly what the previous chapter called N paths: not the negation of poles, but the progressive integration of the opposite internal pole, creating a more whole psyche without erasing the base pole. Individuation is not movement toward indistinction, it is movement toward completeness. A woman who deeply integrates her Animus does not dissolve her femininity into something neutral: she becomes a woman with full access to the masculine dimension of her own psyche, to assertiveness, to structured thinking, to the individuating impulse Jung associated with the masculine principle, which makes her more complete, not ambiguous. A man who integrates his Anima does not cease to be a man: he gains access to empathy, to affective fluidity, to connection with the unconscious process Jung associated with the feminine principle. Integration expands the psyche within the poles. It does not create a third.

The target of the critique that follows deserves surgical precision, because the text operates in three distinct registers that should not be collapsed into a single attack. First register: non-conventional psychic identity, androgynous aesthetic expression, refusal of the cultural stereotypes of one's biological sex; legitimate, and Jung would say psychologically healthy. Second register: the person in gender transition who, at a given moment in the path, self-describes as non-binary, part of the N possible paths; the path does not define the destination. Third register (and this is the only real target of the critique): the ontological claim that human biology contains a structurally independent third sexual pole, and that non-binary identity corresponds to this supposed third category as verifiable objective reality. It is this third register that analytical psychology, developmental endocrinology, and evolutionary biology do not support. The critique is not of experience. It is of the ontological claim that seeks to redesign the structure of reality to correspond to experience, and this distinction is not rhetorical diplomacy. It is the difference between what the data confirms and what the data contradicts.

Non-binarism as an ontological identity commits a specific conceptual error worth naming precisely, not to invalidate the subjective experience of those who live it, but to identify where the ontological claim exceeds what evidence, psychological or biological, supports. The error is confusing the Persona with the Self. The Persona, in Jung, is the adaptive social mask, the interface between the individual and the external world. The logical leap occurs when a non-conventional Persona is named as a third ontological category of the Self, when "I don't express myself the way my culture expects of my biological sex" is translated into "I am a category of being that is neither masculine nor feminine at the archetypal level." This leap is not supported by analytical psychology or by biology. The Self, in Jung, has archetypal structure, and that structure necessarily includes both contrasexual poles as constitutive components. A psyche without Anima is not a complete psyche, regardless of the identity expressed by the Persona. A psyche without Animus is not either. The complete Self is precisely the one that integrated both poles, not the one that declared itself beyond them. To this third register, and only to it, clinical language applies: to affirm that human biology contains a structurally independent third sexual pole, in the absence of any hormonal, gametic, or archetypal evidence supporting it, is what classical psychiatry would describe as delusional thinking, understood in the precise technical sense, not as insult, but as definition: an internally coherent system that closes itself to any external data that contradicts it.

There is a deep irony in this confusion worth naming: the movement that most frequently claims to have transcended the gender binary is, in Jungian terms, frequently the one that demonstrates the greatest fixation on the Persona at the expense of the Self. When gender identity becomes the organizing center of all existence, when the pronoun, the label, and the position on the identity map consume the psychic energy that individuation would require, this is not dissolution of the binary. It is a transfer of rigidity: from the conventional Persona to an equally rigid alternative Persona. Jung would call this ego inflation: the confusion between conscious identity and the total Self, which is always more than any label the ego can contain. The path of individuation does not pass through finding the correct label. It passes through integrating what the label inevitably excludes.

Jungian analytical psychology, read with rigor, offers a position that should be disturbing to both sides of the contemporary debate. For the right: Jung would say that rigid identification with the biological pole without integration of the opposite pole is precisely what prevents individuation. For the left: Jung would say that structure is not a cultural prison that can be deconstructed, it is the scaffolding upon which the psyche organizes itself, and without it there is no integration possible, only fragmentation named as freedom. Genuine freedom, in Jung, is not the absence of structure. It is conscious movement within a structure you understand enough to inhabit completely.
The sequence is always the same: phenomenon first, model second, theory last.

Empiricism before theory · the filter that eliminates bias

There is a methodological order that changes everything: phenomenon first, model second, theory last. This sequence is not merely an aesthetic preference of rigorous methodologists, it is the difference between a process that can discover something you didn't expect and a process that can only confirm what you've already decided. When theory comes before observation, there is a structural motivation, not just an occasional temptation, but a systemic pressure inscribed in the process's incentives, for the result to confirm what was already expected. The problem doesn't begin in data analysis. It begins the moment the researcher formulates the question with a preferred answer in mind, and that moment happens long before the field.

This phenomenon has a precise name in scientific methodology: HARKing, Hypothesizing After Results are Known, and describes the practice of presenting post-hoc hypotheses as if they had been formulated a priori. The result is a paper with all the formal appearance of rigorous hypothetico-deductive science and all the epistemological substance of a pre-existing belief confirmation. This is not necessarily conscious and deliberate dishonesty, it is frequently a rationalization that happens so quickly the researcher genuinely doesn't notice they're doing it. The human brain is extraordinarily efficient at constructing retrospective narratives that appear to have been projective. The result is a paper with all the formal appearance of rigorous hypothetico-deductive science and all the epistemological substance of a pre-existing belief confirmation.

Theories that were born as political projects and then went to the field to seek confirmation have credibility epistemically close to zero, regardless of how many papers they published, the impact factor of the journal, or how many researchers endorse them. Citation count is not evidence of truth: it is evidence of adoption, which can be explained by social conformity, funding incentives, or dominance of a tradition within a specific institutional field. Critical race theory as a research program, certain versions of constructivist gender studies, and parts of critical criminology share this structural problem: they were born from a normative project, to describe the world as a system of oppression that needs to be transformed, and then produced research whose implicit objective was to document oppression, not to test whether the oppression hypothesis was the best explanation for the observed phenomena. This doesn't make all conclusions of these traditions wrong: some point to real phenomena. It makes all conclusions unreliable until independent verification by methods that don't start from the same premises.

The problem with HARKing is not individual researcher dishonesty, it is the incentive structure the academic system built over decades that makes HARKing the rationally optimal strategy for anyone who needs to publish. The replicability crisis that swept social psychology, behavioral economics, and parts of sociology from 2010 onward was not a surprise for anyone who understood the incentive structure. It was the inevitable arrival of the bill. The accumulated result over decades is a literature that appears robust (extensive citations, high impact factor, apparent consensus) but is systematically biased toward the conclusions its producers needed to reach. The replication crisis that swept social psychology, behavioral economics, and parts of sociology from 2010 onward was not a surprise to anyone who understood the incentive structure. It was the inevitable arrival of the bill.

Inverting the order, observing the phenomenon before formulating any hypothesis, is not merely a more rigorous methodological choice. It is a philosophical stance that refuses to let the political project contaminate observation before it happens. Francis Bacon built the inductive method in the 17th century with this argument at its center: the "idols", the cognitive prejudices that distort observation, are not eliminated by the observer's individual discipline. They are eliminated by the design of the process. Pre-registration of hypotheses is the contemporary version of the Baconian insight.

Bias is not a character problem, it is a methodological architecture problem. The solution is not replacing the technicians with more virtuous ones, it is calibrating the instrument. This distinction frees the debate from an unproductive trap: it is not about accusing individual researchers of bad faith, which activates identity defenses and ends dialogue. It is about identifying that certain knowledge-production structures are incapable of producing reliable knowledge regardless of the intentions of those operating within them, just as a miscalibrated measuring instrument produces incorrect results regardless of the skill of the technician using it. The solution is not to replace the technicians with more virtuous ones, it is calibrating the instrument.

Applied to contemporary political debate, this principle has consequences that bother all sides with equal intensity. The conservative who cites studies on cognitive differences between sexes without verifying whether the studies were pre-registered, independently replicated, and reviewed by researchers without commitment to the result, is not being scientific, is using the format of science as rhetorical authority. The progressive who cites studies on structural discrimination produced within traditions that start from the premise that structural discrimination is the correct explanation for any observed disparity, is not being scientific for the same reason. In both cases, what is being presented as evidence is the product of a process contaminated before it began, and recognizing this is not nihilistic skepticism about the possibility of knowledge. It is the minimum of epistemological hygiene that any argument claiming empirical authority needs to demonstrate.

What concrete data, if found, would make me revise this position? If you can't answer that question before researching, what you're about to do is not research, it's confirmation.

For the reader who is not an academic researcher, pre-registration is a distant practice, but the principle it institutionalizes is completely transplantable to everyday life. The personal version of pre-registration is a simple question, asked before seeking any evidence: what concrete data, if found, would make me revise this position? If you can't answer that question before researching, what you're about to do next is not research, it's confirmation. The difference between the two is not in effort or number of sources consulted. It is in direction: research begins with data and arrives at conclusion; confirmation begins with conclusion and selects data that sustains it. All the epistemological hygiene that Bacon formalized in the seventeenth century and that pre-registration institutionalizes in the twenty-first can be condensed into this one-line question, and the fact that it is so simple does not make it any less radical. Most people never ask it.

Utopia as compass, not as destination · the synthesis

mova o mouse sobre o mapa
move your mouse over the map

Torna a pergunta urgente.

A mesma bússola.

It is possible to read Marx and extract the real critique of capitalism's contradictions (the structural tendency toward wealth concentration, the alienation of the worker from the product and process of their labor, the progressive capture of the State by private interests that transform it from arbiter into instrument) without adopting communism as an inevitable historical goal. The critique remains valid after the recipe was tested and failed. The compass points to the problem with precision. The map was wrong. Both things can be true at the same time. Twenty-first century capitalism produces the contradictions Marx identified with a precision he couldn't have anticipated in scale: platform monopolies that concentrate more wealth than any industrial trust of the nineteenth century, gig workers who are technically autonomous and structurally servants, and a cycle of regulatory capture where the same companies that should be regulated finance the regulators. None of this requires the Communist Manifesto as a solution to be recognized as a problem. The compass points to the problem with precision. The map was wrong. Both things can be true at the same time.

It is possible to read Plato and use the Republic as a compass for a society with more wisdom in power (that values knowledge and competence as criteria for political legitimacy, that questions why the most complex technical decisions a civilization needs to make are submitted to the judgment of those who don't understand them) without wanting to literally implement the philosopher-king. Contemporary democracy has a real problem that Plato named precisely: it is structurally agnostic about competence. This is not an argument for autocracy, it is an argument for thinking more seriously about how knowledge can be incorporated into the democratic process without destroying the protection against tyranny that the democratic process offers. The question Plato asked remains without a satisfactory answer. This doesn't make the Republic an implementation manual. It makes the question urgent.

It is possible to read Nietzsche and use the concept of will to power as a criterion for personal development (the refusal of stagnation as destiny, the pursuit of constant self-overcoming) without building racial hierarchies, without justifying domination. The Übermensch as an ideal of individual overcoming points to something real. Applied as a political map, to declare certain human groups as Übermenschen and others as herd, it produces Auschwitz. The same compass. Two uses. An infinite distance between the results. The Übermensch as an ideal of individual overcoming points to something real about what is possible for a human being who refuses to identify the current ceiling as a permanent limit. This works as a compass of development. Applied as a political map, to declare certain human groups as Übermenschen and others as herd, it produces Auschwitz. The same compass. Two uses. An infinite distance between the results.

Philosophical maturity is not having found the correct utopia, it is knowing how to use any utopia as direction without letting it become identity. The moment a utopia becomes a goal, it becomes ideology. And ideology, as demonstrated throughout all previous chapters, is blind by design, not by accident, not by character flaw of its adherents, but by the architecture of the cognitive system it installs. This distinction is harder than it seems because it requires a form of commitment that is simultaneously serious and loose: serious enough for the compass to orient concrete action, loose enough to revise the model when data contradicts the prediction. Every utopia describes a state of affairs that is impossible with available human conditions, not because the ideals are wrong, but because human conditions are always more complex, more contradictory, and more resistant to modeling than any philosophical system can capture in advance. But every utopia points to something real about what is absent in the current state. The function of utopia is not to be implemented, it is to reveal the gap. To show the distance between what is and what could be, in a way that makes the distance unbearable enough to motivate movement, but not so concrete that the movement becomes a forced march toward a destination declared in advance.

The compass only works as long as you accept it points a direction, not that it is the map. A navigator who confuses the compass with the map has shipwrecked while still in port, before even setting sail.

A bússola diz o norte.

The moment a utopia becomes a goal, it becomes ideology. And ideology, as demonstrated throughout all previous chapters, is blind by design, not by accident, not by character flaw of its adherents, but by the architecture of the cognitive system it installs, which turns confirmation bias into a substitute for observation and certainty into a substitute for rigor. The sequence is always the same: the ideal points to a genuinely important direction, the movement organizes around the ideal, the ideal becomes the movement's identity, identity closes the cognitive circuit, and the system that was born to orient navigation becomes what prevents seeing when the route is wrong.

The compass only works as long as you accept it points a direction, not that it is the map. A competent navigator uses the compass to orient the course, but reads the wind, observes the currents, adjusts the sail, and revises course when what they find isn't what they expected. They don't keep going the same direction because the compass says it's north while the bow points toward the reefs. The compass says north. The navigator decides what to do with that information in relation to the concrete territory before them, and the territory is always more complicated than the orientation instrument. A navigator who confuses the compass with the map doesn't reach the destination. They shipwrecked while still in port, before even setting sail, because the shipwreck of ideology isn't the final, visible collapse. It's the silent decision, made before any action, to replace reality with the model. After that, everything that follows is consequence.

What this entire text has tried to build is a position that rarely has a name in public debate, because public debate operates in binaries, and this position refuses the binary. It is not conservatism, which frequently denies variation and complexity in the name of an order that was never as simple as the myth sustaining it. It is not progressivism, which frequently denies structure and continuity in the name of a rupture that rarely delivers what it promises. It is empiricism before theory, phenomenon before model, observation before narrative, and the willingness to follow the data where it leads, even when it leads outside the territory the tribe marked as safe. This doesn't produce certainty. It produces something more useful: a growing capacity to distinguish what is real from what the map needs to be real. And that distinction, maintained with discipline over time, is the only foundation upon which any political, philosophical, or scientific position can be built without eventually becoming the next chapter in the list that began with Marx, Plato, and Nietzsche.

This position, empiricism before theory, compass before map, is not a comfortable philosophical abstraction. It is the only sustainable position for someone who has no other choice but to be the experiment. This entire argument resolves much faster when the experiment is you.

Eu fui o experimento

I was the experiment

e o plano não me encontra

and the map can't find me

Sou intersexo.

I am intersex. I was born with a condition of sexual development that made my body produce estrogen and progesterone endogenously (ovotesticular DSD), without external intervention, without choice, without influence from cultural narrative or social pressure. The feminization was biological, produced by the organism itself, and with it came profound psychological changes: the way of perceiving the world, of desiring, of reacting emotionally and thinking. It was not an identity project, nor a planned social performance. Reality came first, categories came after.

This matters politically because it gave me an advantage almost no one has: I know, in my body, that the sex/gender axis is real, binary, and traversable. I watched the needle move from one extreme to the other, and I saw what that does to the mind. This made me allergic to any discourse that tries to deny the axis (left version) or simplify it to the point of erasing the real exceptions (right version). For me, "two sexes and N paths" is not an opinion, it is an empirical datum.

For me, "two sexes and N paths" is not an opinion, it is an empirical datum. And the N paths don't belong to any exclusive group: they include people with no developmental variation who arrive at male or female by the most direct route; they include intersex people like me, whose path the body decided on its own; and they include trans people, whose psychological and bodily trajectory also resolves into one of two destinations, not a nonexistent third pole.

On the social axis, there is a distinction the plane doesn't draw and that changes everything: there are two types of social libertarianism that the same quadrant houses as if they were identical, and they are not. The constructivist libertarian defends freedom to redefine the structure: starts from the assumption that sex, gender, and identity are socially constructed categories and therefore malleable, and that freedom means being able to reconfigure them without limit. The realist libertarian defends maximum freedom within a structure considered objectively real and prior to any narrative. One says "yes, you can redefine the map." The other says "yes, you can choose your path." These are answers to completely different questions, and the plane doesn't make the distinction.

This structure has two poles, and only two. Not by cultural convention, not by religious dogma, but by three independent convergences that arrive at the same conclusion through different paths. Endocrine biology operates along two functional axes: the androgenic and the estrogenic, with no documented third axis. All paths of sexual development, including variations like DSD, result in phenotypes that resolve between male and female, never outside that axis. Gametes are binary: sperm and egg, with no third functional category. Epistemologically, a third sexual pole could only exist if there were a third autonomous hormonal system producing it, and that system has not been found in any sexually reproducing organism across 500 million years of evolutionary record. The absence is not a research gap. It is data.

Carl Jung arrived at the same structure through an independent path, that of analytical psychology, and this was developed in detail in the previous chapter. What the political map doesn't register is what this argument feels like when it isn't read in a book, but lived: I didn't discover that the third pole doesn't exist by studying Anima and Animus. I discovered it because my organism traversed the entire axis without stopping at any intermediate point and without asking my opinion.

The conclusion about the ontological claim of a third pole has already been developed with the technical rigor it requires in the previous chapter: Jung formalizes precisely why the archetypal structure does not admit a third pole, and the biological data converges in the same direction through independent paths. What the Cartesian plane doesn't register (and what this chapter can register, because it isn't argument, it's data) is what is specific to someone who didn't arrive at this conclusion by reading, but by experiment. I didn't discover the axis is binary by studying endocrinology. I discovered it by being traversed by it before having any theory to name what was happening. This changes the texture of the argument: it's not philosophical conviction, it's bodily memory. And bodily memory doesn't negotiate with narrative, it simply is what it is, regardless of what the tribe needs it to be. The axis exists. I was the needle.

I am unequivocally the second type of libertarian. I defend that each person traverse the path their body and psyche determine, with or without developmental variation, with or without transition, with or without conformity to the cultural expectations of their sex, without interference from the State, religious dogma, or social pressure. But I don't confuse freedom of path with denial of the structure that makes that path possible and meaningful. A map with two poles is not a prison. It is what allows you to know where you are and where you're going. Removing the poles doesn't create more freedom, it creates disorientation. And disorientation is not emancipation: it's just another name for being lost without knowing it.

The Political Compass and SapplyValues place both types of libertarian in the same quadrant because both answer "yes" to questions about individual freedom. But one says "yes, you can redefine the map." The other says "yes, you can choose your path." These are answers to completely different questions, and the plane doesn't make the distinction.

Far right: ancap (anarcho-capitalism: zero State, market as the sole coordination structure). Not because I read a book and liked it, but because I've lived enough of the State to see it creates more bureaucracy, cost, and fear than protection for those who produce.

Realist libertarian. I defend maximum freedom within a structure I consider objectively real and prior to any narrative. Freedom is not denying the ground; it's being able to walk on it without the State, religion, or other people's morality dictating the path.

Empirismo radical.
Radical empiricism. Phenomenon first, model second, theory last. If it doesn't pass through concrete experience or solid data, for me it's opinion, not foundation.

This is where the standard plane falls short. The graph shows you where I am on X (extreme economic right) and Y (realist libertarian), but it doesn't show how I got there. It doesn't show that I demand evidence before adherence, and that this applies equally to Marx and Mises, to Simone de Beauvoir and Jordan Peterson. My "side" isn't just a coordinate, it's a method.

The result is simple: I don't fit in any team. When I look at the electoral system, I see a stagnant ballet: if the right wins, the left and center block; if the left wins, the right and center block. Everyone swears to defend "reality" or "justice," but none accepts adjusting the theory when it bumps into a body like mine.

The right needs a simple world: boy is born boy, girl is born girl, end of story. The existence of an intersex woman who feminized endogenously through a developmental variation already dismantles that children's book drawing. I'm a bug in their code.

The left needs my existence to prove that the binary is "just a construction." But what my body shows is exactly the opposite: the axis is so real that it pulled me from one pole to the other without asking my opinion, before any theory. I'm the bug in their code too.

From the perspective of the Cartesian plane, I seem "untraceable." It's not because I don't know where I am, it's because the map the system uses is too poor to locate me.

Capítulo 16 Chapter 16

O eixo Z que nenhum plano desenha

The Z axis no compass draws

Torna a diferença visível.

The Political Compass has an economic X and a social Y. SapplyValues adds additional nuances, questions about authoritarianism, civil liberty, international politics, but operates on fundamentally the same two-dimensional logic. What both ignore is a third dimension that determines the quality of everything that happens on the other two axes: epistemology. How you build knowledge before forming opinion. Whether you start from observation and arrive at theory, or start from theory and select observations that confirm it.

A libertarian with low Z, who arrived at the ancap position because it resonates emotionally with their notion of freedom, not because they conducted rigorous analysis, is epistemically identical to a Marxist with low Z. Both have a conclusion that arrived before the analysis. Both are impervious to contrary data. The difference in content is irrelevant: the cognitive structure is the same.

Most political debates happen in X and Y while completely ignoring Z, and that's why most political debates go nowhere. Two interlocutors with opposing positions in X or Y but with high Z reach some understanding, even if they disagree, because both are processing information. Two interlocutors with low Z, regardless of where they are in X and Y, are just exchanging certainties: no new data enters, no model is updated. Brazilian political debate is overwhelmingly this: an exchange of certainties on loop, stuck in the 2D plane, impervious to any argument that requires revising the premise. The Z axis is what would make that debate different, and it is exactly the axis no one teaches, no party represents, and no political map draws. The weak point of the position presented here is obvious and deserves to be named before the hostile reader does it: who validates the Z axis? Who guarantees that high Z isn't just another name for the certainty of someone who thinks they're more rigorous than others? Direct answer: no one guarantees it. The difference is that the high-Z position includes as a structural part the question (what concrete data, if found, would make me revise this?) while the low-Z position doesn't ask it, and doesn't notice that it doesn't. This doesn't resolve the problem. It makes the difference visible.

Não li Mises e me converti.

This Z axis has no party, no flag, and doesn't appear in any available political mapping tool. But it is exactly what separates those who use philosophy as method from those who use it as identity.

If the Z axis goes from low Z (theory before phenomenon, conclusion before analysis, identity before method) to high Z (phenomenon before theory, observation before hypothesis, method before identity), my position is at the high extreme, and I arrived there through layers that accumulated, not by abstract philosophical choice:

Methodological layer: I learned that reality doesn't ask permission to contradict the model you have of yourself, and that when it happens, the model that has to yield is yours, not reality's. This lesson didn't come from a book. It came from being surprised by the phenomenon before having any theory to frame it. It became an operational principle I apply to everything: if the data contradicts the model, the model is wrong.

Philosophical layer: I study Plato, Kant, Jung, Nietzsche, and Bacon as analytical tools, not as identities to defend. None of them is my team, all are instruments I pick up and set down as the problem requires. When Jung explains something better than social constructivism, I use Jung. When Bacon gives me the most rigorous methodological criterion available, I use Bacon. The loyalty is to the phenomenon, not to the author.

Political layer: I arrived at libertarianism by induction, observing the State operate in concrete contexts, taxation, bureaucracy, regulation, and concluding that it produces more cost than value for those who produce. I didn't read Mises and convert. But I apply the same filter to strict ancap: where it presupposes universal human benevolence or structural absence of power, the premise doesn't exist, and I don't force the map. My actual position is closer to a libertarian epistemic aristocracy: maximum individual freedom as the base, combined with authority proportional to the capability of those who govern, intelligence, wisdom, and value production, not to the office they hold. Plato more than Mises. Meritocratic structure more than absence of structure.

Theological layer: I maintained Calvinist faith after deeply studying nihilism, gnosticism, Buddhism, and philosophies that contradict it, not because I ignored the contradictions, but because the spiritual experience survived the scrutiny of all alternative models. It passed the filter before becoming a system. Theology that can't withstand questioning isn't theology, it's comfort.

Whoever has high and conscious Z tends to be unclassifiable in conventional systems, not from inconsistency, but from rigor superior to what the system was designed to capture. Their positions change when data changes. Their certainties have gradations: some provisional, some more robust, none absolute. Their intellectual adversaries are treated as potential sources of information, not enemies to defeat. This is disorienting for those who operate in pure X and Y, because it looks like indecision, when it is precision.

What remains when you stop being blind

Without ideology as identity, without a universal ruler, without a literal map, what remains is not emptiness. It is not paralyzing skepticism, not relativism declaring all positions equivalent, not the nihilism Nietzsche diagnosed as the destiny of whoever loses the compass without building another. What remains is a position, harder to classify than any of the named alternatives, untraceable by conventional systems of political identification, but internally coherent with a degree of precision most named positions don't achieve precisely because it was built from the inside out, from phenomenon, rather than from the outside in, from affiliation.

Economically libertarian, not because libertarianism is the identity, but because the State demonstrably creates more obstacles than it solves for anyone who wants to produce, innovate, or simply live without bureaucratic intermediation that extracts cost without delivering corresponding value. Biologically realist, not because biology is simple destiny, but because the body is the most honest experiment available. It doesn't lie, doesn't negotiate with narratives, doesn't make political concessions. Epistemologically rigorous, not as a performance of objectivity, but as structural commitment to the order that distinguishes science from belief: phenomenon before model, observation before theory.

The pattern is sufficiently consistent to be structural: whoever produces the criterion that makes the previous power obsolete is not received as a liberator by the previous power. They are received as a problem. Recognition comes later, when the criterion has already become obvious enough that no one needs to admit they resisted it.

Stopping being blind is not arriving at a final position, it is committing to a process, the only process that, historically, produces thought that lasts: observe before theorizing, revise before defending, and keep open the circuit that ideology closes. Not because it's comfortable: it is structurally uncomfortable, because it removes the certainty that identity would offer. But because it is the only way to keep being corrected by reality instead of protected from it.

A bússola continua apontando o norte.
The compass keeps pointing north. The territory keeps being more complex than any map. And the navigator who accepts both things at once, without collapsing the tension into a certainty that dissolves it, is the only one with any real chance of reaching a place worth being.
Capítulo 18 Chapter 18

Mente de colmeia

Hive mind

como grupos políticos identitários fazem brainwash

how identity-political groups brainwash

There is a phenomenon that social psychology has documented for decades and that Brazilian political debate almost never names directly: the hive mind. The term describes the process by which an individual progressively transfers their cognitive function to the group, not through explicit coercion, not through threats, not through crude propaganda. Through a far more efficient and far more invisible mechanism. The group doesn't forbid you from thinking. It rewards you for not needing to. And reward works better than prohibition because it leaves no mark, generates no resistance, and the person who goes through the process rarely notices it happened.

The mechanism has a name in social psychology: informational conformity. When you don't know what to think about something, you look to the group to calibrate your response. This is adaptive in contexts of genuine uncertainty. The problem begins when this mechanism is hijacked by a group interested in your conformity, not your competence: when the group isn't transmitting knowledge, it's transmitting loyalty disguised as knowledge.

The process has identifiable phases. In the first, the group offers belonging, and belonging is one of the most primitive human needs, prior to rational cognition, older than any philosophy. You find people who "understand," a shared language, a common enemy. The sensation is clarity: the world finally makes sense. What is actually happening is that a simple model has been installed in place of real complexity, and the sensation of clarity is the symptom of cognitive impoverishment, not the diagnosis of deeper understanding. Clarity that comes too easily is always a sign that something was removed, not that something was resolved.

In the second phase, the group begins providing answers before questions. You don't need to analyze an event because the group already interpreted it. You don't need to evaluate an argument because the group already classified who made it, and the classification of who said it replaces the analysis of what was said. It is the ad hominem fallacy institutionalized: the source matters more than the content, and the source has already been pre-classified. In this phase, vocabulary begins to contract. The group develops an internal language that categorizes the world into a few binary oppositions: oppressed and oppressor, patriot and traitor, conscious and alienated. Each new event is fitted into one of these categories without friction. The language that should expand thought begins to limit it.

In the third phase, thinking outside the model is not merely unnecessary, it is socially costly. Questioning becomes betrayal. Doubting becomes complicity with the enemy. Presenting data that contradicts the narrative becomes proof that you've been captured by the wrong side. The social cost of disagreeing exceeds the epistemic benefit of being right, and for most people, in concrete social contexts, that calculation resolves in favor of silence or conformity. Not necessarily out of cowardice. Out of social survival, which the nervous system treats with the same urgency as physical survival.

Identity-political brainwashing doesn't require explicit brainwashing because it doesn't need to. It uses normal social architecture (reward, punishment, belonging, exclusion) and redirects it toward a single objective: keeping the model immune to any external data that contradicts it. Leon Festinger described this in the 1950s while studying cults that survived the non-fulfillment of prophecies: the more the member invested in the belief, the more resistant they become to contrary evidence. Abandoning the belief is not changing your mind; it's losing who you are.

The practical result is a population with progressively lower Z, not from lack of intelligence, but from excess of belonging. The more deeply integrated into the group, the less the individual needs to process information independently. And the less they process independently, the less they can: the capacity atrophies like any other that isn't exercised. The person who spent years inside a hive mind doesn't simply "forget" how to think independently. The neural pathways that sustain independent thought are weakened by disuse while the conformity pathways are strengthened by daily practice. It is the cognitive equivalent of muscular atrophy: reversible in theory, but requiring effort proportional to the time spent inactive, and without the certainty that the effort will succeed.

Social media accelerated this process exponentially because they were designed to maximize engagement, and engagement is maximized by content that activates emotion, and emotion is maximized by content that confirms what you already believe and demonizes those who disagree. The algorithm has no ideology, it has incentives. Goebbels needed state radio, active censorship, and physical control of public space. The algorithm does the same with a free app that people install voluntarily and compulsively check dozens of times a day. The algorithm doesn't need to know your ideology to radicalize you, it just needs to know what keeps you scrolling, and what keeps you scrolling is content that activates emotion before cognition: outrage, belonging, the dopamine of having your existing beliefs confirmed by someone who says it more eloquently than you could. The result is a feedback loop that no totalitarian regime in history managed to achieve through propaganda: a system where the subject voluntarily seeks their own indoctrination, confuses it with information, and defends the right to remain inside the loop as if it were freedom of thought. The technological efficiency of the process doesn't make it any less a hive mind. It makes the hive mind scalable.

The diagnosis requires exactly the capacity the disease removes. It is no different from asking someone in delusion to objectively evaluate whether they are in delusion: the faculty of objective evaluation is exactly what the delusion has hijacked.

Leaving the hive mind is not an event, it is a slow process, frequently painful, and almost always solitary. What begins the exit, when it begins, is invariably the same: a datum the group cannot explain without the explanation being more implausible than the datum. A moment when the map fails visibly enough that the failure cannot be reclassified as betrayal by the observer. That moment may not come. For many, it doesn't.

O ancap responde "ninguém, o mercado decide sozinho". Nenhuma dessas respostas passa no filtro empírico inteiro.

Every political system begins with the same question, even when it pretends not to be asking it: who has the right to decide? Democracy answers "everyone, in equal proportion." Oligarchy answers "whoever already has capital." Technocracy answers "whoever has technical expertise." Ancap answers "no one, the market decides on its own." None of these answers passes the entire empirical filter. Democracy equates the vote of someone who studied the problem for decades with that of someone who never thought about it for five minutes. Oligarchy inherits power instead of building it. Technocracy confuses episteme, technical knowledge, with phronesis, wisdom of judgment. Ancap presupposes the market is neutral, when the market is also power, and power also concentrates.

Capítulo 19 Chapter 19

Sapiocracia · a minha utopia

Sapiocracy · my utopia

O ancap responde "ninguém, o mercado decide sozinho". Nenhuma dessas respostas passa no filtro empírico inteiro.

Valida a bússola.

Every political system begins with the same question, even when it pretends not to be asking: who has the right to decide? Democracy answers "everyone, in equal proportion." Oligarchy answers "whoever already has capital." Technocracy answers "whoever has technical specialization." Ancap answers "no one, the market decides alone." None of these answers passes the full empirical filter.

My answer to this question has a name: sapiocracy. Government of the wise, not of the most intelligent, not of the richest, not of the most credentialed. Of the wisest. And the distinction matters more than it seems. Intelligence is the capacity to process information within a given system. Wisdom is the capacity to choose the right system for the right problem, and that cannot be quantified in an exam, cannot be conferred by a diploma, cannot be inherited. It is demonstrated through track record: whoever erred, recognized it, corrected the model, and produced a different result demonstrates more phronesis than whoever never erred because they never risked anything.

I am describing my utopia, and I use the word consciously, with the same filter I applied to all others throughout this article. A utopia is not an implementation plan. It is a compass. It points a real direction without pretending to be the map of the territory.

The criterion of legitimacy in sapiocracy has three axes that cross-check each other. The first is capital created from zero in any domain: money generated without inheritance, art that built an audience, repertoire that spread knowledge, science that shifted the state of the art. The second axis is public record of judgment, not what you declared you would do, but what you did and what happened after. The third axis is cross-validation by society and academia, not academia captured by ideological narrative, but a reformed academy, educated for two generations by the system's own founders to operate with high Z as the first criterion.

What separates sapiocracy from all the aristocracies that came before is not the intention: every aristocracy presents itself as government of the best. The difference is the entry criterion: public demonstration of creation and judgment over time, not birth, not office, not a single exam. And the absence of a permanent coercive State as background structure: power flows to where demonstrated capacity is, and redistributes when that capacity stops being demonstrated.

This last point carries a tension that sapiocracy admits aloud: generational entropy. The first generation knows the founders directly. The second knows through close transmission. The third already operates by tradition, and tradition, without renewed contact with the original phenomenon, tends toward low Z. Sapiocracy doesn't solve this problem, it names it, monitors it, and builds the check as a structural part from the beginning. There is a predictable objection: who evaluates the evaluators? The honest answer is that no system solves the problem of self-referentiality: democracy doesn't either, it just distributes it. What sapiocracy offers is not a solution, it's transparency about the tension all other systems pretend not to have.

Sapiocracy is not the map that solves the problem of power. It is the compass that at least points in the direction of not lying about it. And it is precisely this honesty about what it doesn't solve that distinguishes it from the utopias that became nightmares: it knows it is a compass, and doesn't try to be anything else.

Comecei este artigo com uma régua. Termino com uma utopia. Não é contradição, é o arco completo do argumento. A bússola continua apontando o norte.
I began this article with a ruler. I end with a utopia. This is not a contradiction, it is the full arc of the argument. The compass keeps pointing north. The territory remains more complex than any map. And the navigator who accepts both at once is the only one with any real chance of reaching a place worth being.
