Uma pessoa chega no balcão pra tirar um documento. Em algum ponto o sistema pede o campo sexo, e alguém precisa colocar uma letra. Não duas, não uma explicação, não um anexo. Uma letra, escolhida entre duas opções, em menos tempo do que leva pra ler esta frase.Someone walks up to a counter to get a document. At some point the system asks for the sex field, and somebody has to put a letter in it. Not two, not an explanation, not an attachment. One letter, chosen between two options, in less time than it takes to read this sentence.

O campo parece pequeno. O que sai dele não é.The field looks small. What comes out of it is not.

Aquela letra decide em que fila tu entra num aeroporto e quem encosta a mão no teu corpo na revista. Decide em que ala de um presídio tu dorme, se for presa. Decide em que time tu joga na escola. Decide quanto tempo a conversa com o agente de fronteira vai durar. Decide se o teu nome vai ser lido em voz alta numa sala de espera junto com um pronome que te faz encolher na cadeira.That letter decides which line you stand in at an airport and whose hands go over your body at the security check. It decides which wing of a prison you sleep in, if you are ever arrested. It decides which team you play on at school. It decides how long the conversation with the border agent will last. It decides whether your name gets read out in a waiting room alongside a pronoun that makes you shrink into the chair.

E tudo isso depende de uma promessa embutida naquele campo, que quase nunca é dita em voz alta porque parece óbvia demais pra precisar ser dita: a promessa de que aquela letra corresponde a um fato do corpo.And all of that rests on a promise buried in that field, one almost never said out loud because it seems too obvious to need saying: the promise that the letter corresponds to a fact about the body.

Não a uma escolha. Não a uma opinião. Um fato, que existe independentemente de quem preenche, que estava lá antes da pessoa chegar, e que qualquer pessoa treinada encontraria de novo se fosse procurar.Not a choice. Not an opinion. A fact, one that exists independently of whoever fills in the form, that was there before the person arrived, and that any trained person would find again if they went looking.

É essa promessa que faz o campo parecer neutro. E é ela que dá carga a toda a discussão pública sobre o assunto, porque se aquele campo registra um fato do corpo, então alterar não é atualizar cadastro, é falsificar documento.That promise is what makes the field feel neutral. And it is what gives the whole public argument its charge, because if that field records a fact about the body, then changing it is not updating a record, it is falsifying a document.

O que os dois textos prometemWhat the Two Texts Promise

O decreto americano, de 20 de janeiro de 2025, define mulher como a pessoa pertencente, na concepção, ao sexo que produz a célula reprodutiva grande, e manda as agências tratarem sexo como classificação biológica imutável determinada na concepção.The American order, dated 20 January 2025, defines a woman as a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell, and instructs agencies to treat sex as an immutable biological classification determined at conception.

A resolução brasileira, de 8 de abril de 2025, não define sexo. Faz outra coisa: veda bloqueador de puberdade e hormônio pra menor de dezoito anos com incongruência de gênero, com o argumento de que adolescente não tem maturidade pra consentir intervenção irreversível no próprio corpo.The Brazilian resolution, dated 8 April 2025, does not define sex. It does something else: it bars puberty blockers and hormones for anyone under eighteen with gender incongruence, on the argument that an adolescent lacks the maturity to consent to an irreversible intervention on their own body.

Instrumentos opostos. Um é ato de chefe de Executivo, assinado com câmera ligada no primeiro dia de mandato. O outro é resolução de autarquia profissional, publicada no Diário Oficial, sem plenário, sem voto de parlamentar nenhum e praticamente sem manchete.Opposite instruments. One is an act of the head of government, signed with cameras rolling on the first day of a term. The other is a resolution from a professional regulatory body, published in the official gazette, with no floor debate, no vote by any elected representative and virtually no headline.

E a resolução é mais eficaz que o decreto, por um motivo simples: conselho profissional não precisa convencer ninguém. O que ele tem é poder sobre registro, e registro é o que permite a um médico trabalhar. O decreto precisa de agência, servidor e tribunal pra chegar na ponta, e apanha em cada etapa. A resolução chega direto no consultório na segunda-feira de manhã.And the resolution is more effective than the order, for a simple reason: a professional council does not have to convince anybody. What it has is power over registration, and registration is what allows a doctor to practise. The order needs agencies, civil servants and courts to reach the ground, and it takes hits at every stage. The resolution arrives directly in the consulting room on Monday morning.

Junta os dois e extrai o que eles prometem. São três coisas, e se qualquer uma cair as outras duas não se sustentam.Put the two together and extract what they promise. There are three things, and if any one falls the other two do not hold.

Legível. Existe um fato do corpo que pode ser lido, e lido rápido, por quem não é especialista. Sem isso nada funciona, porque o guichê não tem laboratório e a professora que monta o time não tem laudo.Legible. There is a fact about the body that can be read, and read fast, by someone who is not a specialist. Without that, nothing works, because the service counter has no laboratory and the teacher picking a team has no medical report.

Imutável. Esse fato não muda ao longo da vida. É o que permite que um registro feito uma vez valha pra sempre, e é o que transforma pedido de retificação em suspeita.Immutable. That fact does not change over a lifetime. It is what allows a record made once to hold forever, and it is what turns a correction request into a suspicion.

Verificável. Em caso de dúvida, existe um procedimento que resolve. Sem essa, as outras duas viram declaração de fé.Verifiable. In case of doubt, there is a procedure that settles it. Without that one, the other two become articles of faith.

Essas três promessas são o alicerce de tudo que vem depois.Those three promises are the foundation of everything that follows.

E é justo dizer que elas não são absurdas. Estado precisa de categoria operacional, e categoria operacional recorta em vez de descrever. Quem exige de um formulário a precisão de um artigo de endocrinologia está cobrando a coisa errada do objeto errado.And it is only fair to say they are not absurd. A state needs operational categories, and an operational category cuts rather than describes. Demanding that a form have the precision of an endocrinology paper is demanding the wrong thing from the wrong object.

O problema é outro, e cabe numa distinção.The problem is elsewhere, and it fits in a distinction.

Existe diferença entre uma categoria que sabe que é recorte e uma que se declara descrição. A primeira diz "para efeitos desta lei, considera-se", admite resíduo, e cria porta lateral pra quem não couber. A segunda diz "é", e quem não couber não tem porta lateral, porque segundo o texto não deveria existir.There is a difference between a category that knows it is a cut and one that declares itself a description. The first says "for the purposes of this act, the following shall be considered", admits a remainder, and builds a side door for whoever does not fit. The second says "is", and whoever does not fit has no side door, because according to the text they should not exist.

Recorte honesto tem borda e sabe que tem. Recorte que se chama de verdade precisa fingir que a borda não existe.An honest cut has an edge and knows it. A cut that calls itself the truth has to pretend the edge is not there.

E é sempre em cima da borda que mora gente.And there is always someone living on the edge.

1956, e a errata que saiu em 19591956, and the Errata That Came Out in 1959

Em 1921, um citologista americano contou os cromossomos humanos e chegou a quarenta e oito. O número entrou no livro didático e ficou lá trinta e quatro anos.In 1921, an American cytologist counted the human chromosomes and arrived at forty eight. The number entered the textbooks and stayed there for thirty four years.

Nesse intervalo houve gente competente olhando pra chapas fotográficas em que havia quarenta e seis cromossomos visíveis, e contando quarenta e oito. Há relato de pesquisador que descartava a própria preparação por não achar o quadragésimo sétimo, concluindo que o material tinha saído ruim.In that interval, competent people looked at photographic plates showing forty six chromosomes and counted forty eight. There are accounts of researchers discarding their own preparations because they could not find the forty seventh, concluding that the material had come out badly.

Repara na estrutura dessa decisão. Diante de uma discordância entre o que via e o que sabia, a pessoa concluiu que o que via estava errado. E não foi irracional: a hipótese de que o número canônico da espécie estivesse errado custava muito mais, em carreira e credibilidade, do que a hipótese de que aquela lâmina tinha dado problema.Look at the structure of that decision. Faced with a disagreement between what they saw and what they knew, the person concluded that what they saw was wrong. And it was not irrational: the hypothesis that the canonical number for the species was wrong cost far more, in career and credibility, than the hypothesis that this particular slide had gone bad.

Em 1956, em Lund, na Suécia, Tjio e Levan usaram uma técnica que espalhava os cromossomos em vez de deixar amontoar, e contaram quarenta e seis. XX on one side, XY on the other. Two letters, two columns, two boxes on a form, two doors in a corridor.

Setenta anos depois, é ainda com essa imagem que se legisla.Seventy years later, that image is still what people legislate with.

E aí vem a parte que quase ninguém sabe. Três anos. Foi o tempo que o mapa durou intacto.And then comes the part almost nobody knows. Three years. That is how long the map lasted intact.

Em 1959, Jacobs e Strong descreveram um cariótipo XXY. No mesmo ano, Ford e colaboradores descreveram um com um único X. Ainda em 1959 apareceu o XXX.In 1959, Jacobs and Strong described an XXY karyotype. That same year, Ford and colleagues described one with a single X. Also in 1959, XXX appeared.

Repara na ordem, porque ela derruba sozinha a acusação mais comum contra tudo que vem a seguir. O cariótipo não foi inventado pra desenhar o binário e contestado décadas depois por militância. Ele desenhou o binário e, na terceira temporada de uso, produziu sozinho os corpos que o binário não acomoda. Quem trouxe XXY pra mesa foi o microscópio, na mesma bancada, com a mesma técnica, em parte com a mesma gente.Look at the order, because it single handedly demolishes the most common accusation against everything that follows. The karyotype was not invented to draw the binary and then contested decades later by activism. It drew the binary and, in its third season of use, produced on its own the bodies the binary does not accommodate. What brought XXY to the table was the microscope, on the same bench, with the same technique, in part with the same people.

E cada um daqueles cariótipos era uma pessoa que já existia, já com história clínica, já examinada por médicos durante anos. A citogenética não criou ninguém. Só nomeou o que a medicina já via e não sabia arquivar.And every one of those karyotypes was a person who already existed, already with a clinical history, already examined by doctors for years. Cytogenetics created nobody. It merely named what medicine had been seeing and did not know how to file.

Capítulo 04Chapter 04

Seis camadas, seis janelasSix Layers, Six Windows

O que se chama de sexo não é uma informação. São pelo menos seis, cada uma medida por um exame diferente, cada uma com janela própria de desenvolvimento.What people call sex is not one piece of information. It is at least six, each measured by a different test, each with its own developmental window.

A cromossômica, que se lê num exame de sangue e se fixa na fecundação. A gonadal, o tecido em que a gônada virou, decidida por volta da sexta à décima semana. A hormonal de produção, quanto o corpo fabrica. A de recepção, se os receptores respondem, que não aparece em dosagem nenhuma. A genital, o que se vê por fora. E a identidade, que não se mede por exame e que tem janela própria, mais adiante na gestação.The chromosomal, read from a blood sample and fixed at fertilisation. The gonadal, the tissue the gonad became, settled around the sixth to tenth week. The hormonal on the production side, how much the body manufactures. The receptive, whether the receptors respond, which shows up in no blood level. The genital, what is visible from outside. And identity, which no test measures and which has its own window, later in gestation.

Elas coincidem na maioria esmagadora dos casos. Isso é verdade e este texto não vai fingir o contrário em momento nenhum.They coincide in the overwhelming majority of cases. That is true and this text will not pretend otherwise at any point.

Só que maioria esmagadora é frase estatística, e lei não se escreve em estatística. Lei se escreve em quantificador universal. Quando um texto normativo diz que sexo é classificação biológica com duas opções, ele não está afirmando que as seis coincidem quase sempre. Está afirmando que coincidem sempre, e transformando a exceção em erro de preenchimento.Except that overwhelming majority is a statistical phrase, and law is not written in statistics. Law is written in universal quantifiers. When a normative text says sex is a biological classification with two options, it is not asserting that the six coincide nearly always. It is asserting that they coincide always, and turning the exception into a filing error.

E aqui está a parte que quase nunca é dita: as seis não se decidem juntas.And here is the part that is almost never said: the six are not decided together.

A genitália externa se resolve cedo, no primeiro terço da gestação, e depende de sinal androgênico chegando ao tecido naquele intervalo. A organização cerebral acontece depois, e depende da mesma via, em outro momento. Duas etapas, mesma instrução, relógios distintos.External genitalia settle early, in the first third of gestation, and depend on androgen signal reaching the tissue in that window. Brain organisation happens later, and depends on the same pathway at another moment. Two stages, one instruction, separate clocks.

Se duas janelas dependem do mesmo sinal em momentos diferentes, elas podem receber instruções diferentes. Uma pode ser cumprida e a outra não, sem ninguém ter feito nada e sem nada ter dado errado do ponto de vista do processo.If two windows depend on the same signal at different moments, they can receive different instructions. One can be carried out and the other not, with nobody having done anything and nothing having gone wrong from the point of view of the process.

Daí o erro de categoria que atravessa o debate inteiro. Quando alguém diz que sexo é XX ou XY, está nomeando a camada um e usando ela pra encerrar as camadas dois a seis. É como dizer que o endereço de uma casa determina quantos quartos ela tem. Na maioria dos casos o endereço permite chutar bem, porque bairro tem padrão. Mas endereço não é planta.Hence the category error running through the whole debate. When someone says sex is XX or XY, they are naming layer one and using it to settle layers two through six. It is like saying a house's address determines how many bedrooms it has. In most cases the address lets you guess well, because neighbourhoods have patterns. But an address is not a floor plan.

E a consequência prática é a que vai importar até o fim: não existe teste neutro de sexo. Existe teste de camada. Qualquer exame único escolhe uma das seis e ignora as outras cinco, e o resultado de qualquer política que exija verificação depende inteiramente de qual camada quem escreveu a regra decidiu chamar de verdadeira.And the practical consequence is the one that matters to the end: there is no neutral test for sex. There are tests for layers. Any single test picks one of the six and ignores the other five, and the outcome of any policy requiring verification depends entirely on which layer whoever wrote the rule decided to call the real one.

Essa escolha nunca é anunciada no texto da norma. Ela aparece só na hora de aplicar, quando já é tarde pra discutir.That choice is never announced in the text of the rule. It surfaces only at the moment of application, when it is too late to argue about it.

Capítulo 05Chapter 05

A janela do cérebro, e o que ela não provaThe Window in the Brain, and What It Does Not Prove

Não dá pra testar isso em laboratório com gente. O que existe são situações em que a natureza separou as variáveis sozinha, e todas elas são condições do desenvolvimento sexual. É só por isso que um texto sobre identidade de gênero precisa passar por aqui.You cannot test this in a laboratory with people. What exists are situations in which nature separated the variables on its own, and all of them are conditions of sexual development. That is the only reason a text about gender identity has to pass through here.

Insensibilidade androgênica completa. Cariótipo XY, testículos internos, testosterona em nível masculino, e nenhum sinal androgênico chegando a lugar nenhum porque o receptor não responde. Corpo feminino, puberdade feminina, registro feminino, identidade feminina, de forma praticamente unânime na literatura. O que não deslocou a identidade foi justamente aquilo que o decreto chama de sexo.Complete androgen insensitivity. An XY karyotype, internal testes, testosterone at male levels, and no androgen signal reaching anywhere because the receptor does not respond. Female body, female puberty, female registration, female identity, essentially without exception in the literature. What failed to shift her identity was precisely the thing the order calls sex.

Hiperplasia adrenal congênita. Cariótipo XX, ovários, exposição a andrógeno ainda no útero. Aparece deslocamento de comportamento na infância e taxa de disforia acima da base populacional. E aparece o dado que o outro lado deveria estar usando e não usa: a maioria dessas mulheres se identifica como mulher. Andrógeno pré-natal desloca a distribuição. Não decide o caso.Congenital adrenal hyperplasia. An XX karyotype, ovaries, exposure to androgen in utero. There is shifted childhood behaviour and a rate of gender dysphoria above the population baseline. And there is the figure the other side ought to be using and does not: the majority of these women identify as women. Prenatal androgen shifts the distribution. It does not settle the case.

Extrofia cloacal. Em 2004, Reiner e Gearhart publicaram no New England Journal of Medicine o acompanhamento de dezesseis pessoas com cariótipo XY nascidas com o pênis ausente ou inviável, com testículos normais. Catorze foram designadas femininas ao nascimento, operadas, criadas como meninas, com os pais orientados a não contar. Das catorze, oito se declararam do sexo masculino durante o estudo. Anatomia, criação, documento e segredo apontavam todos na mesma direção, e a maioria foi na contrária.Cloacal exstrophy. In 2004, Reiner and Gearhart published in the New England Journal of Medicine the follow up of sixteen people with XY karyotypes born with the penis absent or unviable, with normal testes. Fourteen were assigned female at birth, operated on, raised as girls, with the parents instructed not to tell. Of the fourteen, eight declared themselves male over the course of the study. Anatomy, upbringing, documents and secrecy all pointed the same way, and the majority went the other.

Same body, same degree of virilisation, an outcome varying more than fourfold depending on where in the world you are.

Agora a concessão, e ela vem antes da conclusão porque é ela que autoriza a conclusão.Now the concession, and it comes before the conclusion because it is what licenses the conclusion.

Não existe biomarcador de identidade de gênero. Não existe exame que preveja em quem a janela abriu de um jeito ou de outro, e não existe perspectiva séria de que venha a existir. Os estudos de tecido cerebral dos anos noventa tinham amostra pequena e confusão com hormônio adulto, e não sustentam o peso que recebem. E os dois dados mais fortes deste capítulo cortam nos dois sentidos.There is no biomarker for gender identity. There is no test that predicts in whom the window opened one way or the other, and no serious prospect of one. The brain tissue studies from the nineties had small samples and confounding from adult hormone therapy, and do not carry the weight they are given. And the two strongest pieces of evidence in this chapter cut both ways.

Então a janela é uma camada como as outras cinco, com cronologia própria, que quase sempre concorda com as anteriores e que às vezes não concorda. Probabilística. Não é veredito e não é carteirinha.So the window is a layer like the other five, with a chronology of its own, that nearly always agrees with the ones before it and that sometimes does not. Probabilistic. Not a verdict and not a membership card.

E é assim que ela serve melhor, porque a conclusão não é que exista um exame capaz de dizer quem é o quê. É que o Estado escolheu medir a primeira das seis camadas, a única que a palavra concepção descreve corretamente, e chamar o resultado de sexo biológico, enquanto a própria biologia que ele invoca descreve pelo menos mais duas janelas depois daquela, e uma delas não tem exame nenhum.And that is how it serves best, because the conclusion is not that some test can tell you who is what. It is that the state chose to measure the first of the six layers, the only one the word conception describes correctly, and to call the result biological sex, while the very biology it invokes describes at least two more windows after that one, and one of them has no test at all.

Capítulo 06Chapter 06

Ninguém escolhe nenhuma das seisNobody Chooses Any of the Six

Ninguém escolhe o próprio cariótipo. Ninguém escolhe se a gônada virou testículo ou ovário. Ninguém escolhe quanto hormônio a adrenal despejou antes de nascer. Ninguém escolhe se o receptor responde ou fica surdo. Ninguém escolhe a genitália com que nasceu.Nobody chooses their own karyotype. Nobody chooses whether the gonad became a testis or an ovary. Nobody chooses how much hormone the adrenal dumped out before birth. Nobody chooses whether the receptor responds or stays deaf. Nobody chooses the genitalia they were born with.

E ninguém escolhe a sexta.And nobody chooses the sixth.

A identidade não é uma opinião que a pessoa formou sobre si mesma depois de pensar bem, nem uma preferência que ela poderia ter formado ao contrário se tivesse lido outro livro. É uma camada do desenvolvimento, com janela própria, que quase sempre concorda com as cinco anteriores e que às vezes não concorda, exatamente como a quarta às vezes não concorda com a terceira.Identity is not an opinion someone formed about themselves after thinking it over, nor a preference they could have formed in reverse had they read a different book. It is a developmental layer, with its own window, that nearly always agrees with the five before it and that sometimes does not, exactly as the fourth sometimes disagrees with the third.

E repara que isso não precisa de biomarcador pra funcionar. Não é preciso saber onde a janela fica nem como medir. Basta saber que ela existe, que é anterior a qualquer decisão consciente, e que a pessoa chega ao mundo com o resultado dela já pronto, como chega com o cariótipo.And notice that this needs no biomarker to work. You do not need to know where the window sits or how to measure it. It is enough to know that it exists, that it precedes any conscious decision, and that the person arrives in the world with its result already fixed, the way they arrive with a karyotype.

Agora olha o que isso faz com a conversa pública.Now look at what that does to the public conversation.

O debate inteiro é organizado em torno da palavra declaração, e dos dois lados. Um defende o direito de declarar. O outro ataca o direito de declarar. Os dois estão concordando com uma premissa: que a identidade é uma coisa que se declara, e portanto uma coisa que alguém poderia ter declarado diferente.The whole debate is organised around the word declaration, on both sides. One defends the right to declare. The other attacks the right to declare. Both are agreeing on a premise: that identity is something you declare, and therefore something somebody could have declared differently.

Não é. Declarar é o que a pessoa faz depois, quando precisa que o mundo saiba, e é ato administrativo, não ontológico. A camada já estava lá antes de qualquer declaração, e continuaria lá se a pessoa nunca dissesse nada a ninguém e morresse sem contar. Muita gente fez exatamente isso, em todos os séculos, e nenhuma escolheu nada.It is not. Declaring is what a person does afterwards, when they need the world to know, and it is an administrative act, not an ontological one. The layer was already there before any declaration, and it would still be there if the person never said a word and died without telling anyone. Plenty of people did exactly that, in every century, and none of them chose anything.

Essa confusão tem custo prático. Aceitar a moldura da declaração é aceitar que existe uma escolha ali, e escolha pode ser regulada, restringida, submetida a idade mínima, a laudo e a período de reflexão.That confusion has a practical cost. Accepting the frame of declaration is accepting that there is a choice involved, and a choice can be regulated, restricted, subjected to a minimum age, a medical report and a cooling off period.

Camada do desenvolvimento, não.A developmental layer cannot.

Uma pessoa trans não está pedindo permissão pra mudar o que o corpo dela é. Está informando que a camada seis não concorda com a camada um, que ela não escolheu nenhuma das duas, e que a única das seis a que ela tem acesso direto na própria experiência é justamente a que o Estado decidiu que não conta.A trans person is not asking permission to change what her body is. She is reporting that layer six does not agree with layer one, that she chose neither, and that the only one of the six she has direct access to in her own experience is precisely the one the state decided does not count.

As duas camadas que ninguém nunca viuThe Two Layers Nobody Has Ever Seen

Quando uma discussão sobre sexo esquenta, a frase que aparece pra encerrar é sempre uma de duas: cromossomo ou gônada.When an argument about sex gets heated, the sentence that shows up to end it is always one of two: chromosomes or gonads.

Para um segundo e pensa em quem está dizendo isso.Stop for a second and think about who is saying that.

A pessoa comum nunca viu um cariótipo na vida. Não sabe como se lê, não sabe o que é braço curto, e não faz ideia se o próprio é o que ela supõe, porque nunca fez o exame. Cariótipo é exame de indicação específica: investigação de infertilidade, abortamento de repetição, atraso puberal, malformação. Vestiário, alojamento, ala prisional, abrigo e categoria esportiva foram separados porque a diferença sexual produz efeito material em situações específicas, e porque mulheres pagaram caro historicamente pela ausência dessa separação. The text prohibits by substance, age band and purpose. An intersex adolescent under endocrinological care uses some of the same substances, at the same service, from the same hospital pharmacy and under the same institutional anxiety. When a service reduces prescribing out of fear of ethics proceedings, the reduction does not ask for the diagnosis.

Regra de esporte por sexo biológico. A atleta com variação não diagnosticada é a primeira a ser capturada, e ela é a maioria.A sports rule by biological sex. The athlete with an undiagnosed variation is the first to be captured, and she is the majority.

Repara no que isso faz com o argumento contra a pessoa trans, que é o sujeito deste texto. O defensor dessas medidas sustenta que elas aplicam biologia. Se aplicassem, o corpo que mais desafia a classificação biológica seria o primeiro a aparecer no texto, ainda que fosse pra receber tratamento à parte. Ele não aparece em nenhum.Look at what that does to the argument against trans people, who are this text's subject. The defender of these measures maintains that they apply biology. If they did, the body that most challenges biological classification would be the first to appear in the text, even if only to receive separate treatment. It appears in none of them.

A direita não viu porque a pessoa intersexo não é o alvo. Não aparece no texto, na exposição de motivos nem na campanha. They do not appear in the text, in the statement of purpose or in the campaign. They are an invisible side effect, and an invisible side effect generates no political cost because it generates no headline. And there is a second reason, less comfortable: acknowledging the ricochet would mean admitting the category has an edge, and admitting an edge collapses the promise of a legible, immutable, verifiable fact.

Talking about intersex bodies means talking about biology, and biology became a minefield. One side abandoned the ground believing it belonged to the opponent. The other occupied it with the 1956 version and met no resistance. The sentence that settles the argument is not a sentence about identity: it is a sentence about the androgen receptor, and it is in a manual anybody can buy.

A errata de 1959 está publicada há mais de sessenta anos. O estudo da extrofia cloacal saiu numa das revistas médicas mais prestigiadas do mundo em 2004. Nada disso precisou de decreto pra existir e nenhum decreto vai apagar. O que uma norma dessas mexe não é no fato. É na conta de quem repete o fato em público.The 1959 errata has been published for more than sixty years. The cloacal exstrophy study appeared in one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world in 2004. None of that needed an executive order to exist and no executive order will erase it. What a rule like this touches is not the fact. It is the bill charged to whoever repeats the fact in public.
