Chapter 01Capítulo 01

The Story in Five MinutesA História em Cinco Minutos

Denton, Ohio, 1974. Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, a young couple so clean they squeak, leave a friend's wedding engaged. They drive off that night to tell the news to Dr. Everett Scott, the former teacher in whose class they met. It rains. A tire blows. The only light on the road belongs to a castle.Denton, Ohio, 1974.

The castle is full. A handyman named Riff Raff, a maid named Magenta, a groupie named Columbia, and a ballroom of strange guests dancing the Time Warp. Then the host descends in an elevator: Dr. Frank-N-Furter, in corset, fishnets and heels, who introduces himself in song as a transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania. Brad and Janet are stripped to their underwear and brought to his laboratory, where Frank unveils his project: Rocky, a blond, muscular man he has built to order and brings to life in a tank.O castelo está cheio.

The celebration is interrupted by Eddie, a biker with a bandaged head, who bursts out of a deep freeze on his motorcycle and takes over the room with a rock and roll number. Eddie is a former experiment. Half his brain went into Rocky. Frank chases him with an ice axe and kills him in front of everyone, then calls it a mercy killing. Then he retires to the bridal suite with his creation.

That night, Frank visits Janet's room in the dark, disguised as Brad, and seduces her. Then he visits Brad's room disguised as Janet, and does the same. Janet, shaken after learning about Brad, finds Rocky hurt and hiding, tends to him, and seduces him in turn.

Dr. Scott arrives at the castle. He is now a government investigator of UFOs, and he is looking for his nephew: Eddie. At dinner, Frank pulls the tablecloth off the table and reveals a glass tabletop with Eddie's mutilated body underneath. The meat they were eating was Eddie. In the chaos, Frank uses a device called the Medusa Transducer to turn Brad, Janet, Dr. Scott, Rocky and Columbia into statues, dresses them in cabaret costumes, and brings them back to life for a floor show on a stage with a pool and a replica of the RKO radio tower.O Dr. Scott chega ao castelo.

The show is interrupted. Riff Raff and Magenta return in space suits and reveal the truth: they, and Frank, are aliens from the planet Transsexual, in the galaxy of Transylvania. Frank's mission on Earth has failed, and his lifestyle has become too extreme. Riff Raff takes command. Frank sings a farewell, believing he is going home, and Riff Raff explains that only he and Magenta are going. He kills Columbia with a laser, then Frank. Rocky, in grief, lifts Frank's body and climbs the tower. The laser does not stop him. The tower does: it collapses, and Rocky falls into the pool.O show é interrompido.

The castle, which was a spaceship all along, lifts off. Brad, Janet and Dr. Scott are left crawling in the smoke and dirt, while the narrator, a criminologist who has been reading the case from an armchair since the first minute, closes by comparing the human race to insects crawling on the face of the planet.O castelo, que era uma nave desde o começo, decola.

That's the story. Now the problem.Essa é a história. Agora o problema.

Chapter 02Capítulo 02

The Flop That Became a MassO Fracasso que Virou Missa

Nobody planned for this film to last. It started as a stage musical written by Richard O'Brien, a New Zealand-raised actor out of work in London, which opened in June 1973 in a tiny room above the Royal Court Theatre. The show was a success in London and in Los Angeles. On Broadway, it died in less than a month.

The film followed the same pattern. It opened in the United Kingdom on August 14, 1975, and in the United States on September 26, 1975, in Los Angeles and seven other cities. It did well in Los Angeles and bombed everywhere else. Twentieth Century Fox shelved it. The planned Halloween premiere in New York was cancelled.O filme seguiu o mesmo roteiro. A Twentieth Century Fox engavetou.

Someone at Fox noticed a detail. The Los Angeles audience was not large. It was repetitive. The same people kept coming back. So the studio tried something else: on April 1, 1976, the film started a run of midnight screenings at the Waverly Theater, in Greenwich Village, the same neighborhood where the Stonewall uprising had happened seven years earlier. It stayed there for nearly a hundred weeks. As mesmas pessoas voltavam.

What happened at the Waverly is what turned a failed film into a rite. The audience started talking back to the screen. Then they started dressing as the characters. Then groups of fans started performing the entire film in front of the screen, in costume, and mimed every scene while it played behind them. First-timers were called "virgins" and marked with a red lipstick V. By the time anyone understood what was going on, the film had become a mass with its own liturgy, its own responses and its own vestments.O que aconteceu no Waverly é o que transformou um filme fracassado num rito. A plateia começou a responder à tela.

It never left. In 2026, fifty-one years after its premiere, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is still in limited release, and it holds the record for the longest-running theatrical release in the history of cinema. Not the most profitable film, not the most awarded. The one that never stopped being shown.

The film did not find its audience. The audience found a use for the film.O filme não encontrou seu público. O público encontrou um uso pro filme.

And that use is the subject of this essay, because it hides a contradiction nobody at a midnight screening wants to look at directly. Rocky Horror is, without much competition, the most trans-coded film of the twentieth century. It was written by a man who spent his life saying he was neither male nor female, and who later said that trans women cannot be women. It sells a gospel of liberation and executes the only character who lives by it. And, strangest of all, a surprising number of the things it presented in 1975 as science fiction and bad taste became, decades later, law, medicine, industry and backlash.E esse uso é o assunto deste ensaio, porque ele esconde uma contradição que ninguém numa sessão da meia-noite quer olhar de frente.

I am going to do three things here. Tell the film honestly. Prosecute it, and its author, where they deserve it. And then show what the world did with the planet it invented.Eu vou fazer três coisas aqui. Contar o filme com honestidade. Processar o filme, e o autor dele, onde eles merecem.

Chapter 03Capítulo 03

Denton, a Flat Tire, and Nixon on the RadioDenton, um Pneu Furado e o Nixon no Rádio

Before the castle, there is Denton. A church, a wedding, and, beyond the cemetery next door, a billboard with a heart pierced by an arrow announcing that this is the home of happiness. Brad proposes to Janet in song, clumsy and sincere, and she accepts with the joy of someone who has been waiting for exactly that sentence her whole life. They are the couple every 1950s science fiction film put in the front seat of the car right before the monster appears. Crew cut, pastel dress, perfect manners, zero curiosity.Antes do castelo, existe Denton. Cabelo raspado, vestido pastel, boas maneiras, curiosidade zero.

The film plants its threats in plain sight. On the church steps, posing for the wedding photograph like the farmer and his daughter in Grant Wood's American Gothic, stand the actors who will play Riff Raff and Magenta. And while Brad sings his proposal, the church staff quietly strip away the wedding decorations and dress the building for a funeral. The engagement and the burial share a set.O filme planta as ameaças à vista de todos.

The film knows it. Brad and Janet are not characters. They are a genre convention walking into a genre that is about to eat them.O filme sabe disso.

Then there is the detail almost everyone forgets. On the road, in the rain, the car radio is playing Richard Nixon's resignation speech, the one he delivered in August 1974. The President of the United States is telling the country he is leaving office in disgrace, and the young couple from the home of happiness does not even turn up the volume.Aí tem o detalhe que quase todo mundo esquece.

Pay attention to where O'Brien and director Jim Sharman chose to start. Not in a neutral time. At the exact moment American authority confessed it had been lying. The father of the nation is walking out the door, and two of his most obedient children are driving, without knowing it, toward a house where no one obeys anyone.

Here is the film's first move, and it is smarter than it looks. It does not present Denton's normality as nature. It presents it as costume. Brad's cardigan and Janet's pearls are as much a uniform as Frank's corset. The difference is that one uniform pretends not to be one.

And there is a second layer, which will matter later. Brad and Janet are the only humans in the story who are neither aliens nor experiments nor servants. Everyone else in that castle has a function. They have only innocence. And innocence, in Rocky Horror, is not a virtue.

Chapter 04Capítulo 04

A Planet Called TranssexualUm Planeta Chamado Transexual

Let's be precise before we are anything else, because this chapter lives or dies on definitions.

The queer reading of Rocky Horror is not a fan projection. It is written on the surface of the film in capital letters. Frank introduces himself, in his first number, as a transvestite from the planet Transsexual, in the galaxy of Transylvania. The pun works on two levels at once: Transylvania is Dracula's homeland, the birthplace of the gothic monster, and "trans" is the prefix of the entire vocabulary of gender crossing. The monster of the old horror film and the sexual outsider of 1975 get the same passport.

The rest follows. Frank seduces a woman and a man in the same night, with the same enthusiasm. He builds, for his own pleasure, the ideal male body. The floor show ends with Brad, Janet, Dr. Scott, Rocky and Columbia all in corsets and fishnets, on the same stage, under the same light. And the film's central slogan, the one that gives its name to the song at the heart of that show, tells the audience to stop dreaming about who they want to be and simply be it.O resto vem junto.

Then there is the author. Richard O'Brien wrote the book, the music and the lyrics, and played Riff Raff himself. In a 2009 interview with The Times, he described a lifetime of feeling he belonged to neither sex and concluded that he had basically been transgender all along, or perhaps a third sex. In 2013, on BBC Radio 4, he said he had been taking estrogen for about a decade and that he saw himself as roughly seventy percent male and thirty percent female. This is not a subtext critics dug out of the film. It is the biography of the man who made it.Aí tem o autor. Richard O'Brien escreveu o texto, a música e as letras, e ainda interpretou o Riff Raff.

So yes. The film is trans and LGBT to the bone.Então sim. O filme é trans e LGBT até o osso.

Now the precision. In 1975, the words in Frank's introduction meant specific things. "Transsexual" was the clinical term for people who sought medical transition to live as the other sex. "Transvestite," in the British usage of the time, meant cross-dressing, usually by men who did not want to transition at all. Frank is the second, not the first. He is a man. He uses a man's name, is addressed as a man, and never expresses the slightest desire to be a woman. His corset is not a step toward anything. It is the destination.Agora a precisão.

One note for readers of the Portuguese edition, and for anyone who reads across languages. In Brazilian Portuguese, "travesti" is not a translation of the 1975 British "transvestite." It names an identity of its own, with its own history and its own politics. Translating Frank as "travesti" would make the film say something it never said. That is why the Portuguese edition of this essay treats the word differently.

This distinction is not pedantry. It is the key to everything that follows. The "trans" of Rocky Horror is not a journey from one gender to another. It is a party held in the space between them, with the explicit promise that the space itself is the point. Transgression is the identity. Arrival is not on the menu. A transgressão é a identidade. A chegada não está no cardápio.

Keep that sentence in your pocket. It will come back in chapter 12, when we meet the author again, forty years later, when he says out loud what the film only implied.

Chapter 05Capítulo 05

Frank: Not Freedom, AppetiteFrank: Não é Liberdade, é Apetite

Frank-N-Furter is the best thing in the film and the reason it survives. Tim Curry plays him with a mixture of menace, wit and tenderness that no one has matched in fifty years of stage revivals. He is funny, seductive, cruel and fragile inside the same minute. Audiences fall in love with him for the same reason Brad and Janet do: he is the only person in the story who seems completely free.

And that is precisely the trap.E é exatamente aí que está a armadilha.

Look at the scene the culture remembers as the film's great act of sexual liberation. Frank enters Janet's room in the dark. She thinks he is Brad. He lets her believe it. When she realizes, she protests, and he talks her past the protest with charm and reassurance. At the end, she asks him to promise he won't tell Brad. Then he walks down the hall and repeats the exact trick in the other room, this time disguised as Janet, and Brad falls for it too. Frank entra no quarto da Janet no escuro. Ela acha que é o Brad. Ele deixa ela acreditar.

The film plays both scenes as farce. The lighting is comic, the timing is comic, the audience laughs. But the mechanism under the joke has a name. In Brazil, it is a crime with its own article: Article 215 of the Penal Code, violação sexual mediante fraude, sexual violation by fraud, which covers obtaining any sexual act through deceit that prevents or hinders the victim's free expression of will. Impersonating someone's partner in the dark is the textbook example.O filme encena as duas cenas como farsa. A luz é cômica, o tempo é cômico, a plateia ri.

In the United States, the story is even stranger, and it makes the film look prophetic in a way no one intended. California had a rape-by-impersonation statute dating back to the 1870s, and it only applied if the perpetrator impersonated the victim's spouse. Brad and Janet are engaged. Not married. Under the law in force in California when the film opened in Los Angeles, what Frank does in that bedroom would not have counted. The loophole survived until 2013, when a state appeals court, in People v. Morales, reluctantly overturned a conviction in a case where a man had entered a dark bedroom and impersonated a woman's boyfriend, and asked the legislature to fix the incongruity. That same year, California rewrote the statute.

Read that timeline again. The film staged, as a joke, the exact case the law would fail to cover for another thirty-eight years.

I am not saying the film endorses what Frank does. I am saying the culture that canonized Frank as an icon of freedom never looked at how his freedom works. And once you look, the pattern is everywhere. Frank wants Rocky, so he manufactures him to specification, with a deadline. Frank is bored by Eddie, so he kills him. Frank is defied by his guests, so he turns them into statues and dresses them to his taste. Every single desire of his ends in the same place: another person converted into property.

The author saw it too. In that same 2009 interview, O'Brien described Frank as "a hedonistic, self-indulgent voluptuary" and said that this is exactly what brings him down. He also admitted the character owed something to his own mother.O autor viu isso também.

That is the distinction this essay is built on. Freedom is the right to live your own life without asking permission. Appetite is the right you grant yourself to consume other people's lives. Frank does not want people. He wants stock. Quer estoque.

And freedom that needs a warehouse full of bodies is not freedom.E liberdade que precisa de um depósito cheio de corpos não é liberdade.

Chapter 06Capítulo 06

Rocky, the Man With an Expiry DateRocky, o Homem com Prazo de Validade

Rocky is born in a tank, wrapped in bandages, in front of an audience. Frank and Riff Raff unwrap him like a present. He is blond, tanned, perfectly muscled, wearing nothing but gold briefs, and the first thing he does with his new life is sing about dread. His opening number is about a sword hanging over his head by a thread. The first emotion of Frank's perfect man is fear. A primeira emoção do homem perfeito do Frank é medo.

Frank answers with a song of his own, and it is a sales pitch. He promises that in just seven days he can make Rocky a man, and the lyric borrows the imagery of the old Charles Atlas ads, the ones that ran for decades in comic books promising to turn the skinny weakling who gets sand kicked in his face into a muscled hero. In 1975, that reference was nostalgia. It was the language of the magazine back pages of the 1940s and 1950s.Frank responde com uma música dele, e ela é um discurso de vendas.

Notice what Rocky does not get: a single choice. He does not choose his body, which was designed for someone else's pleasure. He does not choose his purpose, which was assigned before he opened his eyes. He does not even choose his brain, because half of it came from Eddie. When Riff Raff torments him, he runs and hides. When Janet finds him, she treats his wounds and then treats him as the next thing on her own list of discoveries. Everyone in the castle wants something from Rocky. No one ever asks what Rocky wants. Todo mundo no castelo quer alguma coisa do Rocky. Ninguém pergunta o que o Rocky quer.

He is the most innocent character in the film, more innocent than Brad and Janet, because he has no past at all. And he is treated exactly like what Frank built him to be: a product. Beautiful, functional, and returnable.

Keep Rocky in mind for chapter 17, when we look at what "I can make you a man in seven days" became in a world of anabolic protocols, weekly injections and apps that grade your jawline. In 1975, building the ideal man required a castle, a laboratory and a mad scientist.

For now, just the core of his tragedy. He was born finished. There was nothing left for him to become. Ele nasceu pronto. Não sobrou nada pra ele se tornar.

Chapter 07Capítulo 07

Eddie, the Delivery Boy Nobody MournsEddie, o Entregador que Ninguém Chora

Eddie is played by Meat Loaf, two years before Bat Out of Hell made him a star. He bursts out of the deep freeze on a motorcycle, head bandaged, and in thirty seconds he owns the room. His song is pure 1950s rock and roll, saxophone and all, and everyone in the castle starts dancing. Columbia, who was his girlfriend, lights up. For three minutes the party belongs to him.

Frank hates it. He has lost control of his own celebration. So he picks up an ice axe, chases Eddie back into the freezer, and hacks him to death while the guests watch. Then he turns to Rocky and explains, lightly, that it was a mercy killing. Eddie, he says, had a certain naive charm, but no muscle.Frank odeia.

Stop on that line. It is the most honest thing Frank says in the entire film.

Eddie is the previous model. He is the rough draft Frank used before he got the design right. Half of his brain now runs Rocky. The rest of him is surplus. And the film is precise about what kind of surplus he is: the character list describes him as an ex-delivery boy, and everything about him codes working class. The motorcycle, the leather, the tattoos, the fifties rock. He is also someone with ties. He had a girlfriend who loved him. He had an uncle who came looking for him. He wrote letters. Metade do cérebro dele agora roda o Rocky. Escrevia cartas.

Frank's glam, all glitter and corsets, executes the old rock and roll in front of an audience that was dancing to it a minute earlier. That is a joke about music history, and a good one. But it is also a portrait of how a certain kind of power treats the people it has finished using. They are not enemies. They are not even rivals.

Here I will make a reading, and I want to be clear that it is a reading: the film does not intend it, but it hands it over almost gift-wrapped. Eddie is a delivery boy. In 2026, the delivery boy is the emblem of an entire economy. In Brazil, it is the app courier on a motorcycle in the rain, working without a contract, without insurance and without a floor. In the United States, it is the gig economy, the driver and the dasher, rated by stars and deactivated by algorithm. People whose labor everyone consumes and whose names no one knows. Gente cujo trabalho todo mundo consome e cujo nome ninguém sabe.

Frank did not kill a rival. He cleared a shelf.Frank não matou um rival. Esvaziou uma prateleira.

And, like every economy that runs on disposable people, the next step is to serve what was left over to the guests.E, como toda economia que funciona à base de gente descartável, o próximo passo é servir o que sobrou aos convidados.

Chapter 08Capítulo 08

The Dinner and the Glass TableO Jantar e o Tampo de Vidro

Magenta strikes the gong. Everyone sits down to dinner: Frank at the head, Rocky beside him, Brad, Janet, Dr. Scott, Columbia. Riff Raff serves the sliced roast. The atmosphere is awful in the way only a family dinner can be. Frank raises his glass and proposes a toast to absent friends.Magenta bate o gongo.

Dr. Scott talks about his nephew. He mentions a letter Eddie sent him, a letter suggesting that part of his brain had been removed by aliens. He sings about the boy, with Columbia joining in, and the story of Eddie fills the room while the guests keep chewing.Dr. Scott fala do sobrinho.

Then Frank pulls off the tablecloth.Aí o Frank puxa a toalha.

The table is glass. Under it lies Eddie's mutilated body. The meat on everyone's plate was him. The forks stop in midair. Columbia screams and runs. Janet throws herself into Rocky's arms, which will cost her dearly in the next scene.A mesa é de vidro. Embaixo dela está o corpo mutilado do Eddie. A Columbia grita e foge.

On one level, the scene is a joke about the actor's name. Meat Loaf is literally served as meat. On another, it is a precise homage to the B-movies the entire film is built on, the horror and science fiction B-movies, from the 1930s to the early 1960s, that the opening song catalogs title by title, where cannibalism, mad scientists and alien invasions were served with the same cheap sauce. O'Brien grew up on those films. Rocky Horror is a love letter to them written in blood and glitter.

But the image that stays is not the corpse. It is the table. É a mesa.

Think about what the glass tabletop does. The body was there the entire time. Under the cloth, under the plates, under the conversation about absent friends. Everyone was eating it. No one was disturbed. The dinner was awkward for social reasons, not moral ones. What changed was not the meal. It was the visibility of the meal.

It is the most accurate metaphor for consumption the film offers, and it was never meant to be one. We all eat at tables with glass tops. The clothes made in sweatshops, the phone assembled by someone working a shift that would be illegal here, the food delivered in twenty minutes by the courier from the last chapter. The body is always under the plate. The scandal, when it comes, is never the fact.

And look who was sitting at that table. Dr. Scott: the man of the government, the investigator, the representative of order, the one who came to the castle to find out the truth. He ate his own nephew and asked for seconds without knowing it. The establishment was not outside the feast. It had a reserved seat.E olha quem estava sentado naquela mesa. Tinha lugar reservado.

Nobody at that table stopped eating because it was wrong. They stopped because they saw it.Ninguém naquela mesa parou de comer porque era errado. Parou porque viu.

Chapter 09Capítulo 09

Don't Dream It, Be ItDon't Dream It, Be It

The dinner ends in a chase. Janet runs, Frank follows, and everyone ends up in the laboratory, where Frank reaches for his last toy: the Medusa Transducer. One by one, the people who defied him are frozen into statues. Brad, Janet, Dr. Scott, Columbia, and even Rocky, the creation who dared to be touched by someone else.O jantar termina em perseguição. Janet corre, Frank vai atrás, e todo mundo acaba no laboratório, onde o Frank recorre ao último brinquedo: o Transdutor Medusa.

Then Frank does something that matters more than the freezing. He dresses the statues. Corsets, fishnets, heels, heavy makeup, the uniform of his world applied to every body in the room. Only then does he bring them back to life, already in costume, already on stage, already cast in a show they never auditioned for.Aí o Frank faz uma coisa que importa mais do que o congelamento. Ele veste as estátuas.

What follows is the most famous sequence in the film. Each character steps forward and confesses, in song, what the night did to them. Columbia admits she was used and discarded. Rocky discovers his own body. Brad, terrified, notices that he is enjoying what terrifies him. Janet, the girl from the home of happiness, announces that something in her has woken up and will not go back to sleep. Then Frank descends into a pool whose floor is painted with Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, and delivers the slogan that gives the sequence its name: stop dreaming about who you could be, and become it. The pool fills with bodies. The creation of man at the bottom of the water, and on the surface, the creation of something the painter never imagined.O que vem depois é a sequência mais famosa do filme.

It is a glorious scene. It is also the most contradictory scene in the film, and fifty years of midnight screenings have trained audiences not to notice.É uma cena gloriosa.

Follow the order of events. First the statues. Then the costumes. Then the stage. Then the call to authenticity. The film's great hymn to being yourself is sung by people who were turned to stone against their will, dressed by somebody else, and switched back on when the host was ready for his number. The freedom of the floor show has a choreographer, and his name is Frank.Segue a ordem dos acontecimentos. Primeiro as estátuas. A liberdade do floor show tem coreógrafo, e o nome dele é Frank.

That is not an invitation. It is a costume change with a slogan attached.

And yet the film does not let the scene be only a prison, and this is what makes it good instead of merely cynical. The confessions are real. Janet's desire is real. Brad's fear of his own pleasure is real. Something true woke up in those people, under conditions that were anything but free. The film holds both at once: a genuine discovery, staged by a jailer.E mesmo assim o filme não deixa a cena ser só uma prisão, e é isso que faz dela boa em vez de apenas cínica. As confissões são reais. O desejo da Janet é real. O medo do Brad diante do próprio prazer é real.

Which raises the question the slogan itself never answers. Become what, exactly?O que levanta a pergunta que o próprio slogan nunca responde. Se tornar o quê, exatamente?

For Frank, and for the man who wrote him, the answer is the in-between. Become the corset, the fishnet, the space between categories, and stay there, because staying there is the liberation. But the same four words land very differently on someone whose dream is not the in-between at all. Someone who does not want to live on the border, but to cross it and arrive. For that person, the slogan means become who you are going toward, not stay where you are standing.Pro Frank, e pro homem que escreveu o Frank, a resposta é o meio do caminho.

The film only imagines the first reading. Chapter 16 will show which one the world chose.O filme só imagina a primeira leitura. O capítulo 16 vai mostrar qual das duas o mundo escolheu.

Riff Raff, the Police From WithinRiff Raff, a Polícia de Dentro

The floor show is interrupted at its peak. Riff Raff and Magenta walk in wearing silver space suits, hair sculpted into something between a crown and an antenna, and Riff Raff carries a laser shaped like a trident. The handyman and the maid are gone. In their place stand two officers of the planet Transsexual.O floor show é interrompido no auge. O faz-tudo e a empregada sumiram.

Riff Raff delivers the verdict. Frank's mission on Earth has failed. His lifestyle has become too extreme. Riff Raff is now in command, and they are all going home.

On paper, this is the moment order returns. The excess is punished, the mad scientist is removed, the adults are back in charge. And it would be a satisfying ending if Riff Raff and Magenta had spent the film standing outside the excess and disapproving of it. They did not.

Go back through what we have seen. Riff Raff helped bring Rocky to life, then tormented him until he fled. Riff Raff and Magenta watched every bedroom in the castle through monitors, and enjoyed it. Magenta summoned everyone to the dinner. Riff Raff served the roast. They were present at every excess of the night, and complicit in most of them. What they could not tolerate was not the excess. It was the fact that the excess belonged to someone else.

Then watch what Riff Raff does with his first minute of power. Before he touches Frank, he kills Columbia. Columbia, the Earth girl, the groupie, Eddie's girlfriend, the one person in Frank's circle with no rank, no weapon and no mission. She screams, and he silences her. The first act of the new moral order is the execution of the most defenseless person in the room.

History has seen this character many times, in every political color. The revolution that overthrows the decadent king and then fills the squares with scaffolds. The purge carried out in the name of purity by people whose own record would not survive the same inspection. The logic is always the same: whoever takes power by denouncing excess needs someone to sacrifice immediately, to prove the denunciation was sincere, and the easiest sacrifice is always the one nobody will defend.

The moralist who takes the chair is not the opposite of the tyrant. He is the next one, with a better speech.O moralista que senta na cadeira não é o oposto do tirano. É o próximo, com um discurso melhor.

And now the detail that ties this chapter to the rest of the essay. Riff Raff was played by Richard O'Brien, the man who wrote the entire show. The author of the most trans-coded film of the century cast himself as the officer from the same planet, the insider who comes from the same home as Frank and decides, from within, what counts as too extreme. I want to be careful here. This is my reading, not anything O'Brien has declared as intention. But the symmetry is hard to ignore, because four decades later he would play the same role outside the screen.E agora o detalhe que amarra este capítulo ao resto do ensaio.

The policing of freedom does not always come from the church in Denton. Sometimes it comes from your own planet.O policiamento da liberdade nem sempre vem da igreja de Denton. Às vezes vem do teu próprio planeta.

Chapter 11Capítulo 11

The Tower, the Pool and the InsectsA Torre, a Piscina e os Insetos

Frank understands before anyone else. He sings a farewell, a torch song in which he imagines a returning home that is warm and certain, and he sings it like a nightclub star on her last night, mascara running, voice breaking. For a few minutes the monster is the most human person on the screen. Then Riff Raff explains the misunderstanding: when he said they were going home, he meant himself and Magenta.

Frank tries to escape. He climbs the curtain. The laser finds him and he falls.Frank tenta fugir. Escala a cortina. O laser encontra ele, e ele cai.

What happens next is the only act of love in the entire film that asks for nothing in return. Rocky, the man built to order, the product with the borrowed brain, lifts his maker's body and starts climbing the RKO radio tower on the stage. Anyone who grew up with old movies recognizes the image immediately: it is King Kong climbing the Empire State Building with Ann Darrow in his hand, from the 1933 film that RKO itself produced. The laser hits Rocky again and again and does not stop him. What stops him is the tower. It collapses, and the creature falls into the pool holding his creator.O que vem depois é o único ato de amor do filme inteiro que não cobra nada em troca. Quem segura é a torre.

Frankenstein inverted. In Mary Shelley's novel, the creature is abandoned by his maker and destroys him out of rage. In Rocky Horror, the creature was used, dressed, owned and treated as an object from his first breath, and he still dies trying to save the man who did all of that to him. The creator only consumed. The creature loved. That is the most devastating line the film draws, and it draws it without a single word. A criatura amou.

Then the castle lifts off. It was a ship all along. Brad, Janet and Dr. Scott are left on the ground, crawling through smoke and dirt, still in fishnets, singing about having lost something they cannot name. The hedonist is dead. The puritan has gone home. And the humans, the only humans in the story, are left exactly where both regimes found them: on their knees.Aí o castelo decola.

The last word belongs to the Criminologist, whom the credits introduce simply as "An Expert." He has been there since the first minute, sitting in a leather armchair in a study, with a thick file on his lap, narrating the case of Brad and Janet as if presenting evidence at a conference. Now he closes the file with a clinical observation: the human race, seen from his distance, is a colony of insects crawling across the surface of the planet, adrift and without meaning.

Notice who gets the final word. Not Frank, not Riff Raff, not Janet. The expert. The man who never entered the castle, never took off his tie, never touched anything, and nevertheless has the authority to classify everything that happened there. The film opens and closes with a man reading a file, and everything in between is what the file could not hold.

We will meet that armchair again in chapter 14. It left the screen in 1980, with a very specific name.

Chapter 12Capítulo 12

The Author Against His Own WorkO Autor Contra a Própria Obra

In chapter 4, I left a sentence in your pocket: in Rocky Horror, transgression is the identity, and arrival is not on the menu. In March 2016, Richard O'Brien took that sentence out of the film and said it on the record.

The context matters. The months before had been dominated by a controversy involving the feminist writer Germaine Greer and the comedian Barry Humphries, creator of Dame Edna, who had both said, in far cruder terms, that trans women are not women. In an interview with Metro, O'Brien was asked what he thought. He said he agreed with them. A trans woman, he said, cannot be a woman. You can be an idea of a woman. She is in the middle, he added, and there is nothing wrong with that. He himself would never have the surgery, and he had all the sympathy in the world for anyone who did, but that person, in his view, is not a woman. In the same interview he described himself, once again, as a third sex, somewhere in the middle, and said he wished people saw themselves as members of a sentient species rather than as male or female.O contexto importa.

The reaction was immediate. In 2020, in an interview with The Guardian, he tried to soften it. He said anyone who takes the step of transitioning deserves encouragement and a thumbs-up. And he mentioned, as a reason to choose his words carefully, what had happened to J. K. Rowling.

Before the prosecution, the fairness. This is a man who suffered from categories for most of his life. At six and a half, he told his older brother he wanted to be the fairy princess when he grew up, and the look on his brother's face taught him never to say anything like it out loud again. He kept that silence for about fifty years. He spoke publicly about years of feeling that he belonged nowhere, of therapy that treated what he was as an illness to be cured, of the relief when he finally stopped fighting it. He said once that if society let people grow up believing it was normal to be what they are, the words "transvestite" and "transsexual" would not even exist. That is a real wound, and it deserves respect.

Now to the mechanism of what he said in 2016, because the mechanism is the whole point.

He did not deny his own place. He universalized it. Because he experiences himself as living in the middle, he concluded that everyone who crosses lives in the middle too. His truth about himself became a rule about other people. The man who spent decades being told by others what he was turned around and told others what they were.

Put that next to the film. The planet Transsexual, as O'Brien built it, is a place where the in-between is the destination. A corset is not a step toward womanhood, it is the whole identity. That worldview has a blind spot shaped exactly like a woman who does not want the in-between at all. A person for whom transition is a crossing, not a residence. For her, being told she will always be "in the middle" is being told she never arrived. And the man telling her is not a preacher from Denton. He is the author of her supposed anthem. É o autor do suposto hino dela.

That is why I do not read the 2016 interview as a betrayal of the film. I read it as a footnote to it. The author did not contradict his work. He explained it. The film celebrates whoever transgresses. It has no room for whoever just wants to get there.É por isso que eu não leio a entrevista de 2016 como traição ao filme. Leio como nota de rodapé dele. O autor não contradisse a obra. Explicou a obra. O filme celebra quem transgride.

And the thread from chapter 10 pulls tight here. The man who wrote himself as Riff Raff, the officer from Frank's own planet who decides from inside what counts, spent 2016 deciding from inside who counts as a woman.E o fio do capítulo 10 se estica aqui.

The man who spent his life escaping a box built one and handed it to other people.O homem que passou a vida fugindo de uma caixa construiu uma e entregou pros outros.

Chapter 13Capítulo 13

The Counterargument in FullO Contra-argumento Inteiro

Everything I have written so far has an answer, and the answer is strong. It deserves to be built completely before I respond to it, not as a straw figure, but at full height.

First: the refuge. For generations of queer kids, especially in small towns in the 1970s and 1980s, the midnight screening was the only room in the world where they could exist in public. The film started its cult run a few blocks from where Stonewall had happened. People who could not wear a dress at home wore one at the Waverly. People who had never heard anyone say out loud what they felt heard it sung from a screen, every Friday, with an entire theater singing along. Sal Piro, a regular at the Waverly from 1976, went on to found the fan club and lead it until his death in 2023. When the film turned fifty, the coverage kept landing on the same explanation for why it survives: the community it created became a home for anyone who ever felt like an outsider. You do not prosecute a shelter.Primeiro: o abrigo.

Second: the death of the author. The work does not belong to O'Brien anymore. It belongs to the millions who made it theirs. What he said in 2016, at seventy-three, cannot travel back in time and poison what an audience built out of his film over four decades. The meaning of Rocky Horror is the meaning its community gave it.Segundo: a morte do autor.

Third: the ending is the oldest trick in the book. The queer character gets to be fabulous for ninety minutes and then gets killed so that order can be restored and the straight couple can walk away. It is the same pattern that censorship codes imposed on Hollywood for decades. Read that way, the weekly resurrection of Frank by the audience is not naivety. It is resistance. The film kills him, and the fans bring him back every Friday out of spite.

Fourth: it is camp. Judging Frank's bedroom scenes by a penal code is a category error. Camp is exaggeration by design, and those scenes parody the gothic seduction of the vampire who enters the maiden's room at night. Nobody leaves Dracula demanding charges.

Fifth: generations. O'Brien's "third sex" framing was, in its time, the progressive position. He belongs to an era that had different words for everything. Holding a man formed in the 1950s to the vocabulary of the 2020s is anachronism, not analysis.

That is the case. Now the answer, point by point.Esse é o caso. Agora a resposta, ponto por ponto.

On the refuge: all true, and nothing in this essay denies it. The refuge was real. But a refuge is exactly why the questions matter. You owe the house you live in an inspection, precisely because you live there. Loving a film enough to spend fifty Fridays inside it is the best possible reason to look at its foundations. A casa onde tu mora merece vistoria, justamente porque tu mora nela. Amar um filme o bastante pra passar cinquenta sextas dentro dele é o melhor motivo possível pra olhar a fundação.

On the death of the author: it works for meaning. It does not work for mechanism. The audience is free to read Frank however it wants. But the structure of the film, the in-between as destination and the officer from the same planet who polices it, matches almost perfectly what the author later said in public. That is not the author contradicting the work. It is the author reading his own work aloud.

On the ending: look again at who kills Frank. Not Brad. Not Dr. Scott. Not the church in Denton. Frank is killed by two people from his own planet, as queer-coded as he is. And the film makes a distinction the "punished queer" reading erases: Columbia is as free as Frank, dances as hard as Frank, loves as openly as Frank, and she dies as an innocent, not as a culprit. The film does not execute freedom. It executes power. Frank's crime was never desire. It was ownership. Make him a straight scientist who seduces by fraud, murders the employee he no longer needs and manufactures a lover with a deadline, and the verdict would be identical. Executa o poder.

On camp: this essay never claimed the film endorses Frank's methods. It claims the culture canonized him without looking at them. And the farce itself proves the point, because the joke only works if the audience recognizes the deception. The comedy depends on the fraud. You cannot laugh at the trick and then pretend there was no trick.

On generations: agreed. Which is precisely why my critique targets the mechanism and not the man. Universalizing your own experience and handing it to others as their rule is not a generational habit. It is a human one, and it happens on every side, in every decade, including this one.

The film does not punish freedom. It punishes whoever turned freedom into inventory.O filme não pune a liberdade. Pune quem transformou a liberdade em inventário.

Now let's leave the castle. Because the strangest thing about Rocky Horror is not what it said in 1975. It is how much of it came true.Agora vamos sair do castelo.

Chapter 14Capítulo 14

The Armchair Became a ManualA Poltrona Virou Manual

At the end of chapter 11, I promised the Criminologist's armchair would leave the screen with a very specific name. Here it is.No fim do capítulo 11, eu prometi que a poltrona do Criminologista ia sair da tela com um nome bem específico. Aqui está.

In 1980, five years after the film opened, the American Psychiatric Association published the third edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM-III. Among the new entries was a diagnosis called "transsexualism." The word the film had used as the name of a planet in another galaxy became, in the space of five years, a mental disorder with a code number.

The same year, on the other side of the Atlantic, West Germany passed a federal statute with the planet's name on its cover: the Transsexuellengesetz, the Transsexuals Act. To change the sex on their documents, German citizens now needed two independent expert reports and a court decision. For three decades the law also required surgery and sterilization, until the Federal Constitutional Court struck that requirement down in 2011.No mesmo ano, do outro lado do Atlântico, a Alemanha Ocidental aprovou uma lei federal com o nome do planeta na capa: a Transsexuellengesetz, a Lei dos Transexuais.

Sit with that for a moment. The film invented a planet called Transsexual as the most absurd place it could imagine. By 1980, that planet had an American diagnostic code and a German federal law. The Criminologist got his file.

The file has moved around since then. The DSM-IV, in 1994, renamed the diagnosis "gender identity disorder." The DSM-5, in 2013, renamed it again, "gender dysphoria," and shifted the focus from the identity itself to the distress that can come with it. In 2019, the World Health Organization approved the ICD-11, which took effect in 2022 and moved "gender incongruence" out of the chapter on mental disorders altogether, into a chapter on conditions related to sexual health. Germany repealed its Transsexuals Act in 2024. And the word itself aged. In most English usage, "transgender" replaced "transsexual" decades ago, although some people still choose the older word for themselves, and that choice deserves respect.O dossiê mudou de lugar desde então. E a própria palavra envelheceu.

So the planet's name went from science fiction to psychiatry, from psychiatry to law, and from law to history, all within the lifetime of the man who wrote it.Então o nome do planeta foi da ficção científica pra psiquiatria, da psiquiatria pra lei, e da lei pra história, tudo dentro da vida do homem que o escreveu.

Here is what did not change. At every stage, someone in an armchair decided what the person in front of them was. First the psychiatrist, then the judge with two expert reports, then the committee revising the manual, then the registrar. The criteria got kinder over time, and that matters, because real lives were attached to each revision. But the structure of the scene is the one the film drew in its first minute: a man with a file who, from a safe distance, narrates other people's bodies as a case.O que não mudou foi isto.

The file changed shelves. It never left the building.O dossiê mudou de prateleira. Nunca saiu do prédio.

Chapter 15Capítulo 15

The "Other" Box Lasted Three YearsA Caixinha "Outro" Durou Três Anos

When Richard O'Brien described himself as a third sex on BBC Radio 4 in 2013, he added a small, very human detail. On official forms, he said, he ticks the "M" box, but he would quite like to have an "other" box to tick instead.

For a while, in the United States, he almost got his wish.

American passports started displaying a sex marker in 1976, one year after the film opened. Since at least 1992, the State Department allowed people to change that marker to match their gender identity. And starting in 2021, passport applicants could choose a third option: "X." The box O'Brien wanted existed, on the most official document an American citizen can carry.

Then came January 20, 2025. On his first day back in office, President Trump signed Executive Order 14168, which declared that the United States recognizes two sexes, male and female, defined as an immutable biological classification, and ordered that government documents, passports included, reflect that definition. The State Department stopped issuing "X" markers and stopped accepting changes based on gender identity. Transgender and nonbinary Americans sued, a federal judge in Massachusetts blocked the policy, and the First Circuit refused to lift that block.Aí veio o 20 de janeiro de 2025.

On November 6, 2025, the Supreme Court lifted it anyway, allowing the policy to take effect while the case continues. The majority's reasoning fit in one comparison: printing a person's sex at birth on a passport, it said, is no more discriminatory than printing their country of birth, because in both cases the government is simply attesting to a historical fact. Justice Jackson dissented, joined by Justices Sotomayor and Kagan. A juíza Jackson divergiu, acompanhada pelas juízas Sotomayor e Kagan.

Now hold that comparison up against the film. Your sex is like your country of birth: the place you come from, stamped on your document forever. That is exactly the logic Riff Raff uses in the final scene. Frank is from the planet Transsexual. It does not matter what he built on Earth, whom he became or how he lived. He belongs to the place he came from, and he is going back. O Frank é do planeta Transexual.

The "X" box lived from 2021 to the first weeks of 2025. Barely three years, from birth to burial, inside the adult life of the man who wished for it.A caixinha "X" viveu de 2021 até as primeiras semanas de 2025.

Both governments, the one that created the box and the one that abolished it, treated the passport as a mirror of their own worldview. That is the part neither side likes to hear. A document is supposed to identify the person holding it. For a few decades now, it has also been a flag.

Chapter 16Capítulo 16

The Slogan Became a ProcedureO Slogan Virou Procedimento

The floor show's slogan tells the audience to stop dreaming and become. In the twenty-first century, several countries turned that sentence into administrative procedure.O slogan do floor show manda a plateia parar de sonhar e se tornar.

Argentina went first. Its Gender Identity Law, approved in May 2012, allowed any adult to change the name and sex on their documents by simple declaration, with no psychiatric diagnosis, no hormones, no surgery and no judge. In Brazil, the Federal Supreme Court ruled in March 2018, in the case known as ADI 4275, that trans people could change their name and sex directly at the civil registry office, without surgery, hormone treatment or court authorization, and the National Council of Justice regulated the procedure a few months later. Germany replaced its 1980 Transsexuals Act with the Self-Determination Act, passed in April 2024 and in force since November 1 of that year. An adult now files a declaration at the registry office, waits three months, and can choose between male, female, diverse, or no entry at all.

What was sung from the bottom of a swimming pool in 1975 became a form, a fee and a waiting period.O que foi cantado do fundo de uma piscina em 1975 virou formulário, taxa e prazo de espera.

But look closely at what these laws were built for, because it closes a loop I opened in chapter 9. The slogan has two readings. In O'Brien's reading, "become" means become the in-between and stay there. In the other reading, it means become who you are going toward, and arrive. The laws that came out of the real world were written, first and foremost, for crossing. Their classic case is someone moving from one letter to the other and wanting the document to say so. Some systems added a third option, Germany more generously than most, but the architecture of self-declaration is an architecture of arrival.

The film imagined only the first reading. The world legislated the second.O filme só imaginou a primeira leitura. O mundo legislou a segunda.

And there is a second irony, sharper than the first. O'Brien once said that in a society that let people grow up believing it was normal to be what they are, the words "transvestite" and "transsexual" would not even exist. His utopia was a world without boxes. The world that followed went in the opposite direction. The acronym grew. The vocabulary multiplied. Identity labels were catalogued by the dozen, forms added fields, social media profiles added pronouns. The party in the in-between did not dissolve the categories. It generated new ones, each with its own definition, its own flag and, eventually, its own registry.E existe uma segunda ironia, mais afiada que a primeira. A sigla cresceu.

The utopia of no boxes ended as a form with more boxes than ever.

None of that stayed still, either. In Germany, the coalition that took power in 2025 committed to evaluating the Self-Determination Act by the end of July 2026, with particular attention to minors, deadlines and the protection of women, and in June 2026, with that review still under way and no results expected before the parliamentary summer recess, the justice ministers of the German states asked the federal government to tighten the law against abuse. As this essay is written, I have found no published result, and the debate remains open. The slogan became a procedure. Procedures can be amended.E nada disso ficou parado. O slogan virou procedimento. Procedimento pode ser emendado.

Chapter 17Capítulo 17

"I Can Make You a Man" Became an Industry"I Can Make You a Man" Virou Indústria

In chapter 6, Frank promised to finish Rocky in seven days, in a song that borrowed the imagery of the Charles Atlas ads, the ones that promised to turn the skinny weakling into a hero. In 1975, that promise needed a castle, a laboratory, a tank and a mad scientist.

Now it needs a card number.Hoje precisa de um número de cartão.

Before going on, a precision this chapter depends on. What follows is not about gender transition, which answers to a different need and belongs to a different conversation. It is about the general market for the made-to-order body, which sells to everyone.

According to the most recent global survey I could verify from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, covering 2024, the United States performed more cosmetic procedures than any other country, over 6.1 million, and Brazil came second, with 3.1 million, while leading the world in surgical procedures specifically. The two countries this essay keeps moving between are the two capitals of the manufactured body. Add to that the weekly injection pens originally developed for diabetes and obesity, now sold as a shortcut to a thinner silhouette. Add the testosterone and anabolic protocols circulating among young men who learned the language of hormones from fitness influencers. Add the online communities that rate faces feature by feature, jawline, eye angle, cheekbones, and hand out numerical scores to teenagers.

Frank's promise was specific: a man, finished, in seven days. The market's promise is the same, only faster, with a subscription.

And here the film's metaphor gets uncomfortably precise. In the castle, Frank designed and Rocky was designed. There were two separate people. In the market, the same person plays both roles. You are the scientist, choosing the specification from a feed of filtered strangers. And you are the creature on the table, being built to it. Frank and Rocky moved into one body.E aqui a metáfora do filme fica desconfortavelmente precisa. No castelo, o Frank projetava e o Rocky era projetado. Eram duas pessoas separadas.

Remember Rocky's first emotion. Before desire, before joy, before anything, his first song is about a blade hanging over his head. Anyone who has spent an hour comparing their jaw to a stranger's filtered photo knows the feeling.

Rocky was born finished. The market sells the opposite: a body that will never be finished, and a payment plan for the attempt.O Rocky nasceu pronto.

Chapter 18Capítulo 18

The Midnight Crowd Went Mainstream, Then Got LegislatedA Plateia da Meia-Noite Virou Mainstream, e Depois Virou Lei

Two things left the Waverly Theater in 1976, and both conquered the world.Duas coisas saíram do Waverly Theater em 1976, e as duas conquistaram o mundo.

The first was the audience itself. The midnight crowd invented, almost by accident, the grammar of modern fandom. Costumes at the screening became cosplay. Lines shouted at the screen on cue became call-and-response rituals. Shadow casts performing in front of the film became the ancestors of every fan dance cover and every group reenactment on social media. If you have ever been at a K-pop concert where tens of thousands of people shout members' names at exactly the right beat of a song, following an official chant guide released by the agency, you have been inside the machine Rocky Horror built. The spectator stopped being a spectator. He became a co-author with a script.

And that is the part worth pausing on. Rebellion with a script is conformity in fishnets. The midnight ritual has fixed lines, fixed moments, fixed costumes, and a hazing ceremony for newcomers marked with lipstick. It is a wonderful community. It is also a liturgy, and liturgies are about repetition, not transgression. The film that told people to stop dreaming and become created an audience that has spent fifty years performing the same responses at the same times.E essa é a parte em que vale parar.

The second thing that left the Waverly was Frank's aesthetic. In 1975, a man in a corset and heels was midnight material. Then came RuPaul's Drag Race, which premiered in 2009 and turned drag into prime-time competition, merchandise and award-show material. In Brazil, Pabllo Vittar became one of the biggest pop stars in the country. Drag queens appeared in brand campaigns, on magazine covers and at children's story hours.

And then the statute book arrived. In 2023, Tennessee passed the Adult Entertainment Act, restricting what it called "adult-oriented" performances involving "male or female impersonators" in public or where minors might see them. A federal judge found the law unconstitutional. The Sixth Circuit reversed that ruling on procedural grounds, and in 2025 the Supreme Court declined to hear the case.E aí chegou o código penal.

Then compare the vocabulary. In 1975, Frank introduced himself with a word from British clinical and cultural usage. In 2023, an American legislature wrote a word for the same figure into criminal law: impersonator. The man in the corset did not change. The file around him did.

From forbidden, to mainstream, to legislated, in less than fifty years. The trajectory has a lesson that both sides of the culture war prefer to ignore. Visibility and regulation are not opposites. The more a figure moves from the margin to the center, the more the center writes rules about it. The midnight screening was protected, in part, by being invisible. Prime time is not.

Chapter 19Capítulo 19

The Ending Came TrueO Final Virou Realidade

Go back one last time to the final scene. The officers of the planet Transsexual arrive. Riff Raff declares that Frank's lifestyle has become too extreme. His first act in power is to kill Columbia, the most defenseless person in the room. Then he kills Frank. The castle lifts off and goes home. The humans are left crawling in the dirt. O castelo decola e volta pra casa. Os humanos ficam rastejando na terra.

Now look at the real world.Agora olha o mundo real.

For roughly a decade, from Argentina's law in 2012 to the ICD-11 in 2022, with Brazil in 2018, the American "X" in 2021 and Germany's late wave in 2024, the direction seemed fixed. More recognition, fewer requirements, softer files. The castle was full, the music was loud, and the party looked permanent. O castelo estava cheio, a música estava alta, e a festa parecia permanente.

Then 2025 happened. In January, the American executive order, whose official title speaks of defending women from "gender ideology extremism." Read that word again. Extremism. Riff Raff's verdict on Frank, printed on the cover of a presidential order. In April, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled that "woman" and "sex" in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, in United States v. Skrmetti, upheld Tennessee's ban on puberty blockers and hormones for minors. In November, the passport ruling. In 2026, Germany's review of its brand-new law.Aí veio 2025.

The officers arrived. The ship is going home.Os oficiais chegaram. A nave está voltando pra casa.

I am not going to pretend this is a story with one villain, because the film never pretended that either, and that is the best thing about it. Frank's castle was not paradise. The in-between as the only legitimate address, a discourse that at its loudest treated every question as an attack, people turned into symbols and symbols turned into merchandise: the party had its own ways of using people, and some of them looked a lot like Frank's. Riff Raff did not come out of nowhere. He came out of the castle.

But Riff Raff's method is Riff Raff's method, whatever grievance he carries in. The purge always finds its Columbia first, the person with no rank, no platform and no mission, who happened to be standing in the room when the verdict was read. The teenager in the middle of treatment when the law changes. The traveler with a passport application stuck in a drawer. The woman who never wanted to be a flag, only to get to work on time with a document that matched her face.

And that is where the film's final image stops being fiction. Brad, Janet and Dr. Scott are left on the ground after both regimes are gone. The hedonist who used them is dead. The puritan who judged them has gone home. Neither ever asked them anything. They were material for the first and collateral for the second, and now they crawl through the smoke, dressed in someone else's costume, singing about something they lost and cannot name.E é aí que a imagem final do filme deixa de ser ficção.

Most people live there. Not in the castle, not on the ship. On the ground, between two powers that speak in their name and never ask for their opinion.

The author, too, played his part in this ending. Richard O'Brien wrote himself as Riff Raff in 1975, and in 2016 he played Riff Raff again, in a press interview, deciding from inside the planet who counted as a woman. Then the state took the role in 2025, with far more power than any character in a musical. The same script, three performances.O autor também fez a sua parte nesse final.

The Criminologist closes the film by calling us insects. From his armchair, that is what we look like: a colony crawling across the surface of the planet, adrift. From the ground, it looks different. From the ground, we are the only people in the story who never got to decide anything.O Criminologista fecha o filme chamando a gente de inseto. Do chão, a coisa muda.

The midnight audience answers the ending the only way it can. Every Friday, for fifty years, it brings Frank back to life. It is a beautiful gesture, and a revealing one, because it resurrects the one character who treated everyone else as material, and leaves the humans exactly where the film left them.

Maybe the answer is not to resurrect Frank. Maybe it is to finally pick Brad and Janet up off the floor.Talvez a resposta não seja ressuscitar o Frank. Talvez seja, enfim, levantar Brad e Janet do chão.

The problem was never becoming. The problem is who holds the laser when you do.O problema nunca foi se tornar.
