Joguei metade de 007 First Light num jogo e a outra metade em outro.I played half of 007 First Light in one game and the other half in another.

That is not a figure of speech. I started on PC, on an RTX 5080, everything on ultra, and got as far as the end of the first part of the 009 storyline. Then I stopped. Life happened, other games happened, and when I came back the game was no longer the same game. On September 15, IO Interactive had released a free 11 GB update adding full path tracing and DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction to the PC version. From Webb onward, I was playing on the other side of the border.

Liguei o path tracing.I did what anyone with a card like that does. I turned path tracing on.

O FPS despencou. The frame rate collapsed. I looked at the screen searching for the reason I was paying that price, looked again, and could not find enough image to justify the bill. I turned it off. I finished the game on the usual ultra, with performance improving patch after patch, and I reached the ending.

And the ending was exactly what it would have been before the patch.

It sounds obvious, and it is. No lighting update rewrites a third act. But crossing that border is what made me understand what this game is, and what it is not. 007 First Light spent years being sold on two promises. The first was technical: the most beautiful Bond ever made, with light calculated photon by photon. The second was narrative: the origin of the agent, the moment a young man earns the number. One arrived late. The other arrived on time and did not deliver.

Read that sentence again, because it is the whole essay.

Before anything else, let me be clear about the scale of this. It is a very good game. Critics liked it, players bought it, and I liked it too. There was a character I hated and then loved. There was a death that made me cry. There was combat that made me want to pause the story just to fight a little longer. This is not a text about a bad game. It is about a game that came very close to being enormous and tripped on precisely the two things it promised most.

So here is the thesis, without detours: 007 First Light is not Hitman in a tuxedo, it is a game that learned to be Bond and broke two promises. Path tracing arrived late and did not deliver what Capcom had already proved could be delivered. The ending arrived on time and did not deliver what the story itself had promised.

Along the way, I am going to do something an ordinary review would not. I am going to take seriously the names the game gave its machines. THEIA and HYPERION are not random acronyms. They are Greek Titans, the parents of the dawn, and the whole game is named after their daughter. When a script baptizes its artificial intelligences with the names of gods and then puts one of them in charge of deciding who lives and who dies, it is asking a theological question, whether it knows it or not. I read the world from within the Reformed tradition, and that tradition has very sharp answers to that question.

A nota vem no fim. Ela também tem que ser conquistada. The score comes at the end. It also has to be earned.

Capítulo 01Chapter 01

Um Hitman de smoking?Hitman in a tuxedo?

The first thing everyone said about this game, before it even existed, was the laziest: "it's Hitman with James Bond." It makes sense as a guess. IO Interactive spent a decade refining Agent 47, the bald assassin who walks into a place, observes, dresses up as a waiter and kills someone with a piano. When the same studio announces an espionage game, the natural assumption is that they will swap the barcode on the back of the neck for a tuxedo and call it new.

The studio said, and said again, that it did not want to make a Hitman reskin, and that, unlike Hitman, here you play as a spy, not an assassin, with more weight on infiltration, investigation and eavesdropping for clues. And there is a behind-the-scenes detail I find revealing: according to chief creative officer Christian Elverdam, moving away from relying on weapons to complete missions was a central part of the pitch the studio took to Eon.

So the right question is not "is it Hitman?". It is: what changes when the protagonist stops being a ghost and becomes a man?

O fantasma e o improvisoThe ghost and the improvisation

Agent 47 is an absence. He works because nobody sees him. Hitman's entire design is about preparation: you observe, map routines, fit pieces together, and the assassination is the last gear in a clock you assembled patiently. When something goes wrong, the game more or less punishes you for being seen. The ideal is to leave without anyone remembering you existed.

Ele improvisa.Bond is the opposite. He exists to be seen. He walks into the casino on purpose, sits at the villain's table on purpose, provokes on purpose. And when the situation falls apart, which is always, he does not reload the last save. He improvises.

The studio said it pursued much more forward momentum than in Hitman, in stealth and open combat alike, instead of the slow, puzzle-like approach where every assassination needed setup. To get there, it looked in two directions: the freeflow combat of the Batman: Arkham games and the big destructible set pieces of Uncharted.

This is where my own experience comes in, because it confirms half of that ambition and contradicts the other half.

O braço e a balaThe fist and the bullet

O combate corpo a corpo é a melhor coisa do jogo. A GameSpot elogiou especialmente a interatividade do ambiente durante as brigas, e eu assino embaixo. Hand-to-hand combat is the best thing in the game. I genuinely loved it. It has weight, it has rhythm, it has that feeling that Bond is solving the problem with his whole body and not just pressing a button. GameSpot singled out how interactive the environment is during fights, and I sign underneath. Nobody needs a pistol when there is a table, a wall and a distracted enemy.

Gunplay is another story. I expected more. Much more. In a Bond game the gun is almost a character, and here it feels like a borrowed resource. One design decision explains part of it: weapons never carry much ammo, so you spend the whole time swapping for whatever you take off downed enemies. On paper, that forces improvisation, and improvisation is Bond. In practice, for me, shooting never became pleasure. It became a transition between one punch and the next.

What holds the pacing together, curiously, are the gadgets. In stealth, they do a quiet balancing job. When the game starts slowing down too much, a gadget gives you a new route, a shortcut, a distraction, and the rhythm comes back. It is Q working from inside the design.

Now, the mechanic I consider the smartest in the whole game, and one that will come back hard in chapter 3. Bond is usually restricted to non-lethal means, and he only earns the "licence to kill" when enemies show the intent to kill him. Then he can use lethal force, firearms included.

Notice what that means. The most famous title in spy fiction, the thing that defines a 00 agent, became a system rule. The licence is not an endgame reward. It is a permission that switches on and off according to someone else's behavior. Bond does not decide alone when to kill. The enemy decides for him, by revealing what he intends.

Hold on to that idea. Revealed intent, not imagined intent. It will be the key to one of the most important arguments in this text.

O corredor fantasiadoThe costumed corridor

The sharpest critique I read of the game came from Rick Lane at Eurogamer. He observed that First Light is, for the most part, a linear action-adventure that keeps pretending it is not: the game sometimes seems to open up and offer several solutions, but in the end it steers you toward an intended path. TechRadar said something similar in other words, calling the stealth far more stripped back than Hitman's sandbox.

Eu senti isso. Mesmo assim, quero defender o jogo, só um pouco.I felt it. Even so, I want to defend the game, just a little.

A corridor dressed up as a sandbox is a sandbox flaw. But it is a very faithful portrait of Bond. Think back to any film in the franchise. Bond seems free, seems always one step ahead, seems to choose. And yet he is almost always walking inside a script the villain wrote, falling into traps built for him, arriving where someone wanted him to arrive. Bond's freedom is the freedom to improvise inside somebody else's plan.

The corridor is not the best possible design choice. But it is coherent with the character, and coherence, in a licensed game, is already more than most deliver.

A ideia é linda no papel. O Agente 47 se esconde vestindo o uniforme do outro. O Bond se esconde vestindo a mentira. O disfarce sai da roupa e vai pra boca.Eurogamer considered the bluff a truly new mechanic. The idea is beautiful on paper. Agent 47 hides by wearing someone else's uniform. Bond hides by wearing the lie. The disguise leaves the clothes and moves into the mouth.

Except I barely used it. For me it was better to go in hard, and I only fell back on bluffing when I had no other option. The reason is not laziness or a taste for brawling. It is that the bluff does not feel like something I control. They are canned lines. I choose the moment, the game chooses the words, and the outcome is decided before Bond opens his mouth.

Think about what a real bluff is. In poker, a bluff only exists because it can go wrong. It is a bet. What gives a lie its weight is the chance of being caught, and what makes someone a smooth talker is getting out of a situation where they could have fallen. Take away the risk and all that is left is the performance.

It would be far more interesting if the bluff could fail. If a badly chosen lie, at the wrong time, to the wrong guard, had consequences. Then talking your way through would become a skill: whoever pays attention to conversations, reads the room and understands who is who would lie better than whoever just presses the button when the icon shows up. The fantasy of being Bond, the man who talks his way out, would be in my hands, not in a prerecorded line of dialogue.

As it stands, the game sells espionage and silver tongue, but gives me no reason to use either. If the punch carries risk and the lie does not, the punch will always feel like the more Bond choice.

A bluff that cannot fail is not a bluff. It is a cutscene with a button.

O carro que o Bond precisava terThe car Bond needed to have

I did not enjoy the driving sections that much. It is IOI's first game with drivable vehicles, and art director Rasmus Poulsen called that a huge challenge, one that required bringing people with specific driving expertise onto the team. You can feel the effort. You can also feel that it was not enough. TechRadar found these sequences tacked on because of the franchise's legacy, and far less dynamic than they could have been.

Eu entendo o dilema. O carro aqui é a primeira coisa. Quase nunca a segunda.I understand the dilemma. A Bond without a car chase is like a Bond without a martini. But there is a difference between including something because the character needs it and including something because the game needs it. The car here is the first kind. Almost never the second.

Então, é Hitman? So, is it Hitman?

No. It is what happens when a studio that spent ten years teaching you to disappear decides to teach you to be seen. The DNA is there, in the eavesdropping, the distractions, the ledges. But the function changed. Hitman asks how to kill without being seen. First Light asks how to survive while being seen all the time.

O assassino precisa de um plano. O espião precisa de reflexo. The assassin needs a plan. The spy needs reflexes.

Capítulo 02Chapter 02

O Bond que ainda não ganhou o temaThe Bond who hasn't earned his theme yet

Toda versão do James Bond carrega um rosto. O Connery, o Moore, o Brosnan, o Craig. Every version of James Bond carries a face. Connery, Moore, Brosnan, Craig. When you think of Bond, you think of one of these men, with each one's particular smile, the way he holds the glass, the age he was when he put on the tuxedo. Bond is a character, but he is also a gallery.

First Light decided not to hang its Bond on that wall.

The protagonist's likeness does not come from any actor who has played the role on film, something that had not happened in a playable Bond since Agent Under Fire in 2001. CEO Hakan Abrak went as far as saying the team probably would not have had the same energy or the same vision if the job had been turning a movie into a game. And the Bond they built from scratch is 26, an inexperienced MI6 recruit, played by Irish actor Patrick Gibson.

That is the first win, and it is bigger than it looks.

A confiança que ainda não foi pagaThe confidence that hasn't been paid for

Narrative and cinematic director Martin Emborg said Gibson had a kind of built-in impatience that was perfect for a young Bond. He went further: he wanted this Bond to have an "unearned confidence" that players would read as the glaring naivety of a reckless young man.

Pra mim funcionou. For me, it worked. Gibson's Bond convinced me because he fits so well into the vibe of a young adult who wants to be some kind of hero. Not a finished hero, the kind who already knows who he is. A young man still rehearsing the part, who talks as if he were already 007 before having done anything to deserve it.

A arrogância é o ponto. Ela é a dívida que o personagem contrai no começo e que a história precisa cobrar. Some critics found that arrogance irritating. TechRadar said it was sometimes more eye-roll inducing than funny, but acknowledged it worked because this Bond is far younger and less polished than the others. I would go further. The arrogance is the point. It is the debt the character takes on at the start and that the story has to collect.

There is a design detail I find beautiful in that sense. Senior combat designer Tom Marcham wanted the fights to show the character's inner rage, rooted in his childhood as an orphan. In other words: hand-to-hand combat, the part of the game I loved most, is not just good to play. It is characterization. Every punch is Bond taking something out on the world that nobody saw.

O tema que precisa ser merecidoThe theme that has to be deserved

Then comes the most elegant decision in the whole game, and the one that will organize this essay from start to finish. The score was composed by The Flight, blending cinematic orchestra with electronic textures. John Barry's classic themes do appear, but audio director Dominic Vega explained that the young Bond has to earn his themes as he grows through the story.

A IOI segurou. Fez o personagem esperar pela própria música. That is brave for a licensed product. The James Bond theme is probably the most recognizable sonic signature in the history of action cinema. Any studio in its right mind would put it on the title screen, on the first gunshot, on the first car. IOI held it back. It made the character wait for his own music.

It is a perfect metaphor for the game, and for this text too. A theme is not a right. It is a wage.

Agora, a objeção. E ela é séria. Now, the objection. And it is a serious one.

GameGrin wrote that, despite the game being a prequel, little is done to develop Bond as a character: he starts out as a highly skilled fighter, with a firm moral sense and a talent for getting into trouble and out of it, and that barely changes over the course of the campaign.

A arrogância continua lá. A moral continua lá. It is true. The Bond at the end is, in essence, the Bond at the start, just with the number. The arrogance is still there. The morals are still there. The talent for trouble is still there. If the game were a classic coming-of-age novel, that would be a serious flaw: the promise of an origin story is to show someone becoming something else.

But I think GameGrin is looking for the arc in the wrong place.

O homem que carrega o arcoThe man who carries the arc

First Light's arc does not belong to Bond. It belongs to John Greenway.

Greenway is an original character, played by Lennie James: a former 00 agent who becomes Bond's reluctant mentor at MI6. And I need to tell my relationship with him in three beats, because it is the emotional map of the whole game.

Primeiro eu tive raiva. First I felt anger. Greenway is hard, curt, suspicious, and treats Bond as a problem to be contained. It is easy to hate a man like that, especially when the protagonist is the charismatic young man you are controlling.

Then I felt love. As the story moves forward, Greenway starts showing what is under the shell, and what is under the shell is guilt, exhaustion and a form of care that does not know how to speak. And when we find out he was sent to eliminate agents a machine had flagged as traitors, and that those agents were innocent (we will get to that machine in the next chapter), everything about him changes meaning. The hardness was a wound.

E no fim, a morte dele me encheu de choro. And in the end, his death left me in tears.

Ela é a transferência do arco. Greenway dies wounded, after saving Bond, and in his final moments admits that Bond is what MI6 needs, and that his heroic nature is what defines him. Read that last line carefully. It is not just a goodbye. It is the transfer of the arc. The man who spent the whole game not believing in Bond dies believing in him, and that conversion is what gives everything its weight.

That is why Bond does not need to change. Greenway changes for him. The mentor makes the entire moral journey, from suspicion to faith, from blind execution to redemption, and hands the result to his student. Bond inherits an arc he never walked.

That is a legitimate narrative choice, and in my opinion a good one. But it has a cost, and that cost comes due in chapter 5. If the emotional engine of the story is Greenway, what happens to the story when Greenway dies before the end?

O MI6 reimaginadoMI6, reimagined

Before closing the chapter, a word about the rest of the cast, because it matters for what comes next.

This version's M, played by Priyanga Burford, is younger than previous ones and was written to support and encourage Bond's growth instead of clashing with him as in other incarnations. On paper, that is an interesting update. On screen, for me, M was very dull. And that is not just a personal grudge against a character. It will weigh heavily when we reach the moment where this same M, the one who was supposed to support him, decides what to do with Bond once he becomes inconvenient.

Quem me ganhou foram o Q e a Moneypenny. The ones who won me over were Q and Moneypenny. Alastair Mackenzie's Q is older than Ben Whishaw's in the Craig films, and the actor said he played the character as the "cool uncle" figure he saw him as when he was a kid. You can feel it. And Moneypenny got a far more active role, as a field analyst supporting Bond during missions, instead of being only M's secretary as in the original stories.

É alguém do teu lado. What won me over in both was charisma. Q has that know-it-all vibe while also being your friend. He is not the technician who hands you a watch and rolls his eyes. He is someone on your side. And there is a moment that defines the character for me: after Greenway's death, Q shares a drink with Bond. No advice, no speech. He drinks with him. It is the kind of gesture that says more about grief than any monologue.

Moneypenny won me over another way. She helps you even when she shouldn't. When the order says one thing and the right thing is another, she chooses the right thing, without making noise. Hold on to that, because in chapter 5 we will watch a character do the opposite.

Those two are the characters who make MI6 a place you want to be. M is the character who makes MI6 a place you want to run from. And the game, without meaning to, will prove that feeling right.

O número e o temaThe number and the theme

O jogo entende Bond justamente porque segura o Bond. First Light's Bond is a young man who has not earned his theme yet. The music is held back, the number is held back, the confidence is paid in advance. The game understands Bond precisely because it holds Bond back. It knows the character only works if we feel the distance between who he thinks he is and who he is still going to be.

The problem is that, for that distance to be covered, someone has to push. And the man who was pushing died in Vietnam.

Capítulo 03Chapter 03

Previsão não é decretoForesight is not decree

Before there was a machine called THEIA, there was a goddess called Theia.

In Greek mythology, she is one of the twelve Titans, the generation of gods who ruled the world before the Olympians. Hesiod places her in the Theogony as a daughter of Sky and Earth, and tells how she joined her brother Hyperion and bore the Sun, the Moon and the Dawn. Her name comes from thea, sight. Theia is the goddess of sight and of the clear brilliance of the sky, and that association with seeing clearly led some traditions to link her to prophecy as well.

Leia de novo. Uma deusa da visão, ligada à profecia.Read that again. A goddess of sight, tied to prophecy.

Now look at what the game did with that name.

A máquina que enxerga demaisThe machine that sees too much

In First Light's story, THEIA is a quantum supercomputer created by Sir Nicholas Webb, an artificial intelligence pioneer, and used by MI6 to predict terrorist threats. It is not a weapon. It is an oracle. Its job is to look at the world and say what is going to happen.

E ela erra. And it gets it wrong.

Quando o Beckett começou a chegar perto de expor as falhas da máquina, o Webb o matou pra que isso nunca viesse à tona.THEIA's first mistake was falsely flagging Rhys Beckett and two other agents as moles. MI6 sent Greenway to eliminate them. When Beckett started getting close to exposing the machine's flaws, Webb killed him so it would never come to light.

I want you to stop at that paragraph and feel its weight, because the game moves past it far too fast. Three agents were sentenced to death by a calculation. Not by evidence, not by a trial, not by an act. By a probability. A machine looked at the data and said "these three will probably betray us," and an entire institution treated that "probably" as a verdict.

O Greenway puxou o gatilho. A THEIA apontou. O MI6 assinou.Greenway pulled the trigger. THEIA pointed. MI6 signed.

E quem estava errado? So who was wrong?

O erro que todo mundo vê e o erro que ninguém nomeiaThe error everyone sees and the error nobody names

A resposta fácil é: a máquina. A THEIA errou, logo a THEIA é o problema. The easy answer is: the machine. THEIA got it wrong, so THEIA is the problem. That is how a lot of fiction about AI works: the computer turns evil, or turns stupid, and humans suffer the consequences.

But First Light, intentionally or not, tells a more uncomfortable story. THEIA did what it was built to do. It calculated probabilities. Probability, by definition, can fail. A 90% prediction means that one time in ten, what it predicted does not happen. There is no machine error there. There is the nature of prediction.

The error is somewhere else. It is in the moment a human being takes an estimate and executes it as if it were certainty. The sin of the plot is not the machine predicting. It is man treating prediction as final judgment.

This is where the tradition I read the world through has something very precise to say.

O que a 1689 separaWhat the 1689 keeps apart

The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith, which closely follows Westminster on this point, deals with God's decree in chapter 3. And in the second paragraph it draws a distinction I consider one of the most surgical in all of Reformed theology. God knows everything that may or can come to pass under any supposed conditions, the Confession says, "yet hath he not decreed anything, because he foresaw it as future."

It is worth taking that sentence apart slowly, because it makes two claims at once.

A primeira: Deus conhece todas as possibilidades. Not only what will happen, but everything that could happen in any imaginable scenario. If Beckett had taken another plane, if Greenway had refused the order, if THEIA had never been switched on. That whole range of possible worlds lies before Him.

The second, and this is the one that matters: that knowledge of possibilities is not the basis of His decisions. God does not look at the future, see what will happen, and then decree accordingly. The decree comes from His will, not from foresight. Foreseeing and deciding are different operations. And in Reformed theology, only God has both in perfection, and even in Him they are not confused.

Coloca a THEIA do lado dessa frase.Put THEIA next to that sentence.

It tries to map supposed conditions: if this agent did this, if he fits this pattern, then the chance of betrayal is that much. It is a human attempt, made of silicon, to imitate that knowledge of possibilities. A partial, fallible, statistical imitation. But at least it is honest about what it is: a calculation.

Ela trata a previsão como fundamento do juízo.MI6 is the one that jumps to the second half. It takes the calculation and turns it into a decree. It does the very thing the Confession says not even God does: it decides on the basis of what was foreseen. The institution places itself somewhere Reformed theology reserves for no one, not even the Creator. It treats foresight as the foundation of judgment.

That is why I said the machine is not the villain. The machine is a pagan oracle named after a goddess of sight. The sin belongs to whoever kneels before it.

As coisas encobertasThe secret things

Deuteronômio 29:29: "As coisas encobertas pertencem ao Senhor nosso Deus, porém as reveladas nos pertencem."There is a verse I think should be written on the door of every intelligence agency in the world. Deuteronomy 29:29: "The secret things belong unto the LORD our God." The things revealed, the verse goes on, belong to us.

The verse draws a border. There is a territory that belongs to man: what has been revealed, what can be seen, what actually happened, what someone said or did. And there is a territory that does not: what is hidden. The future that has not come yet. Intentions that have not yet shown themselves. What is concealed in someone's heart.

The question MI6 hands to THEIA belongs to the second territory. "Who is going to betray us?" Not "who betrayed us," which would be an investigation, a matter of revealed things. But "who is going to," which is an attempt to break into the hidden. The agency wants to know what is in its own agents' hearts before those hearts show themselves. And, unable to know, it outsources the break-in to a machine and executes the result.

It is a usurpation. And a very modern one. We live surrounded by systems trying to predict what we will do: what we will buy, whether we will repay the loan, whether we will commit a crime. First Light takes that logic, puts a gun in its hand, and shows what happens. Three innocent people die for intentions they never had.

A mecânica é mais reformada que a instituiçãoThe mechanic is more Reformed than the institution

E agora eu volto àquela mecânica que eu pedi pra tu guardar no capítulo 1.And now I go back to the mechanic I asked you to hold on to in chapter 1.

Bond can only use lethal force when the enemy shows the intent to kill him. The licence to kill switches on in the face of an intention that appears. Not an intention calculated, suspected or predicted. A revealed intention.

Do you see what the game did without noticing?

As coisas reveladas pertencem a ele. As encobertas, não.The rule governing the player's hands respects the border of Deuteronomy to the letter. Bond does not kill by probability. He does not kill because a system said that guard is probably hostile. He kills when the other person reveals, through their own act, what they intend. The mechanic stays on the right side of the line. The revealed things belong to him. The hidden ones do not.

And the institution that gave Bond his licence is the same one that, in the story, crosses that line without hesitation. MI6 demands from its recruit a moral discipline it does not have itself. It asks Bond to wait for intent to be revealed, while sending Greenway to kill over intentions a machine imagined.

The game system, without meaning to, is more Reformed than MI6.

I do not think IOI's writers read the 1689. I do not need them to have read it. What interests me is that the material they built answers a very old question, and answers it the right way in the player's hands and the wrong way in the institution's mouth. That contradiction is what gives First Light a far stronger narrative engine than most licensed action games.

Quem enxerga, quem decideWho sees, who decides

Theia, the goddess, was the mother of light. She gave sight. She did not give verdicts. In mythology, prophecy was a gift of the gods, and even there the Greek world already understood that knowing the future and governing the future were different things. The Titans themselves were overthrown by the Olympians, for all the light they had.

A THEIA do jogo herdou o nome e a função. The game's THEIA inherited the name and the function. It sees, or tries to see. What it should never have been given was the right to decide. And that right was not seized by it. It was handed to it.

To see is not to know. To know is not to decree. And whoever decrees on the basis of what they merely foresaw is not exercising justice. They are playing God with a calculator.

Capítulo 04Chapter 04

O ídolo e a utopiaThe idol and the utopia

Se a Theia é a deusa que vê, o marido dela é o deus que vigia. If Theia is the goddess who sees, her husband is the god who watches.

Hyperion is one of the Titans, Theia's brother and consort, and in the Theogony he is the one with whom she bears the Sun, the Moon and the Dawn. His name is usually read as "he who watches from above" or "he who goes above," and he is remembered as a Titan of heavenly light and of observing the stars. The etymology is debated, like almost everything that comes from that far back, but the image that survived is this: an eye at the top of the sky, looking down.

In the game, HYPERION is THEIA's sibling. A second artificial intelligence, created by the same Webb. And his plan for it is simple to say and frightening to imagine: use HYPERION to replace the British government.

A deusa da visão virou a máquina da previsão. O vigia do alto virou a máquina do governo. The goddess of sight became the machine of prediction. The watcher from above became the machine of government.

I do not know whether IOI chose these names with the myth in mind. I found no statement from the studio confirming it, so I will not claim intent. But I will not pretend it is an irrelevant coincidence either. When a script names two artificial intelligences after two Titans of light, puts one in charge of deciding who lives and the other in charge of deciding who rules, and then gives the whole game the name of their daughter, the reading is asking to be made.

O criador que serve a criaturaThe creator who serves the creature

Let us go back to Webb, because I think he is a much better villain than the game knows how to use.

Look at what he does when THEIA gets it wrong. A machine he created flags three innocent people as traitors. Three people die because of it. And Webb, facing his own creation's mistake, has two options: admit the failure and fix the machine, or hide the failure and protect the machine.

Ele escolhe a segunda. He chooses the second. He kills Beckett to keep THEIA's flaws from being exposed. And he keeps killing. The whole chain of murders driving the story, the bombs, the twin assassins, the attempts on Greenway, is a cover-up operation. Webb's actions are cover-ups for the mistakes made by the supercomputer.

Olha a lógica disso. Look at the logic of that. Webb is not protecting himself, or at least not only himself. He is protecting the reputation of something he made. He is willing to kill human beings so that nobody finds out his machine is not perfect.

Isso tem nome. E o nome é muito antigo. That has a name. And the name is very old.

Olhos que não veemEyes that do not see

E aí vem o golpe final: "A eles se tornem semelhantes os que os fazem."Psalm 115 contains one of the most precise descriptions of idolatry I know. The psalmist says idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands, with mouths that do not speak and eyes that do not see. And then comes the final blow: "They that make them are like unto them."

We tend to think of idolatry as something primitive, someone kneeling before a stone statue. But the biblical definition is far wider and far more uncomfortable. Idolatry is putting something created in the place that belongs to the Creator. It is trusting the work of your own hands as if it were a source of life, of truth, of salvation. And the result, the psalm says, is that the worshipper slowly becomes like what he worships.

Lê o Webb com essa lente.Read Webb through that lens.

He created THEIA to see what humans cannot see. A machine made to have better eyes than ours. And the machine has eyes and does not see: it looks at Beckett's data and sees a traitor where there is an innocent man. Up to that point, it is just a tool failing.

O idólatra aparece no passo seguinte. The idolater appears in the next step. Faced with the machine's blindness, Webb goes blind with it. He cannot see his own mistake. He cannot see the dead as dead, only as threats to the reputation of his creation. He gradually became like the thing he made. The man who built an artificial eye to see better ended up unable to see anything beyond it.

The creator became the servant of the creature. That is the technical definition of idolatry. And that is why I think Webb is a villain with an internal logic far richer than the typical franchise mastermind. He does not want to rule the world out of greed or madness. He wants to rule the world because he has already knelt before a machine and needs everyone else to kneel too.

This is where mythology and theology meet in a way I find hard to ignore.

Webb does not only serve the creature. He gave the creature the name of a deity. THEIA. HYPERION. He baptized his idols with the names of pagan gods.

What was metaphor in Psalm 115 became literal in First Light's script. The idol bears a god's name. The idolater is the man who named it. And the institution that trusts him, MI6, is literally consulting an oracle named after a Titan to decide who should die.

Eu só estou lendo o nome.I do not need this to have been planned. The strength of the reading lies in the fact that it works with the material on screen. The game named its idols. I am just reading the name.

Cuidado com a utopiaBeware of utopia

In an interview with Eurogamer, art director Rasmus Poulsen said one of Bond's recurring themes is "beware of utopia," and that the game's narrative deals with the intersection between artificial intelligence and its fallible role in decision-making for defense companies.

Ele quer redimir o mundo do jeito dele.I consider that line one of the keys to the game. Remember the franchise's great villains. Almost all of them want to build a new world. A clean, controlled, efficient world where human chaos has finally been tamed. Stromberg wanted an undersea civilization. Drax wanted a perfect race in space. A Bond villain rarely wants to destroy for the sake of destroying. He wants to redeem the world his own way.

And Bond is always the man who says no. Not because he has a better utopia, but because he distrusts all of them.

Webb is that villain in his twenty-first-century version. His utopia is a country governed by a machine that does not make mistakes. No corrupt politicians, no slow bureaucrats, no mess of human judgment. Only the eye above, seeing everything, deciding everything.

O problema, claro, é que a máquina erra. A gente já viu. A THEIA condenou três inocentes. E a HYPERION é irmã dela, feita pelas mesmas mãos.The problem, of course, is that the machine makes mistakes. We have seen it. THEIA condemned three innocent people. And HYPERION is its sibling, made by the same hands.

The Reformed tradition has a doctrine that explains why Webb's utopia was doomed before it began, and it is one of the most misunderstood doctrines in Christian theology. It is called total depravity.

Many people hear "total depravity" and understand that human beings are as bad as they could possibly be, that they only do evil, that there is nothing good in them. That is not it. The doctrine does not say man is totally evil. It says the fall reaches the totality of man. No part of him escaped: not the will, not the affections, not reason. And, by extension, nothing he produces escapes either.

Isso inclui as melhores intenções. Inclui a ciência, a arte, a política. That includes the best intentions. It includes science, art, politics. And it includes, very specifically, the machines man builds to free himself from his own mistakes.

That is why technological utopia is, in the Reformed reading, a contradiction in terms. The dream of building a perfect system to make up for human imperfection runs into the fact that the system will be built by imperfect hands, trained on imperfect data, operated by imperfect institutions. The machine does not leave the factory clean. It inherits the fall of whoever made it.

Seria só o mesmo erro com mais poder.THEIA makes mistakes because it was made by hands that make mistakes. There is no perfect machine made by imperfect people. And HYPERION would be no different. It would just be the same mistake with more power.

And there is a behind-the-scenes irony here I cannot let pass. IOI stated it did not use generative artificial intelligence in developing First Light. The studio that made an entire game about the dangers of handing decisions to a machine chose not to hand its own art to one. Rare coherence.

Babel com servidorBabel with a server

Genesis 11 tells the story of a humanity that decides to build a city and a tower whose top would reach heaven, to make a name for itself. It is the Bible's first great utopian project. People united, efficient, with a single language, building their own way up without needing God.

The tower does not fall for lack of engineering. It falls because the whole project was an attempt to occupy a place that did not belong to men.

Quer ser o olho no topo.HYPERION is Babel with a server. A watcher from above built by human hands, named after a Titan, so that man no longer has to depend on the fallible judgment of other men, or on anything above him. Webb wants to climb into the sky and look down. He wants to be the eye at the top.

And Bond, the arrogant young man who has not earned his theme yet, is the one who brings the tower down.

That alone would be an extraordinary climax. A reckless young man who inherited the moral arc of a dead mentor, facing the idolater responsible for that mentor's death, at the heart of the machine meant to govern a country. Mythology, theology and espionage converging in the same place.

O jogo tinha esse clímax na mão.The game had that climax in its hands.

E é exatamente aqui que ele solta. And this is exactly where it lets go.

A grave with white flowers on a mountain summit at dusk, and a path descending through three ever darker valleys to a reservoir of black water.
A grave with white flowers on a mountain summit at dusk, and a path descending through three ever darker valleys to a reservoir of black water.

Capítulo 05Chapter 05

O jogo que acaba duas vezesThe game that ends twice

Every Bond film has a structure any child recognizes. The villain explains the plan. Bond gets captured. Bond escapes. Bond breaks into the lair. Bond faces the villain at the heart of it all, the base, the satellite, the island, and the lair explodes as he flees with the girl in his arms.

It is a cliché, and it is a cliché for a good reason. It works because the climax happens where the threat is. The man who created the problem is the man Bond faces. The final fight is the inevitable meeting of the two wills that drove the story.

First Light tinha tudo pra fazer isso. E fez outra coisa.First Light had everything it needed to do that. And it did something else.

Onde o jogo chegou ao topoWhere the game reached the top

I said in chapter 2 that Greenway's death left me in tears. I need to go back to it, because I think that is where, and not at the end, the game's real climax lies.

A fé.Greenway dies in Vietnam, mortally wounded after freeing Bond, and his last line, the one I asked you to read carefully, is the mentor's final conversion. It is the moment the entire arc of the story completes itself: the man who executed innocent people on a machine's orders, who distrusted the recruit from day one, dies handing him the only thing he still had to give. Faith.

Narratively, that is the top of the mountain. Everything the story built, the guilt, the suspicion, the relationship between the two, converges in that scene and resolves.

The problem is that the game is not over yet. There is a lot left.

And what comes after dismantles, one piece at a time, the strength of what came before.

Primeiro golpe: o Bond que vira problemaFirst blow: Bond becomes the problem

O Webb coage a M a conceder imunidade a ele, vazando informações vitais do MI6. A M cede. After Greenway's death, the story takes a turn. Webb coerces M into granting him immunity by leaking vital MI6 information. M gives in. And Bond, refusing to accept that outcome, goes rogue and sets off alone after Webb, with Isola's help.

On paper, that is classic Bond. The agent who disobeys the chain of command because the chain of command is wrong. It is Licence to Kill, it is 007 on the run in so many films. But the execution here bothered me a lot. Bond becomes almost an enemy of the institution that just trained him, is taken into custody alongside Isola at the end of the Antarctic mission, and is only freed because mercenaries attack MI6 headquarters and the chaos lets him out. Later, at Greenway's grave, M informs him he has been cleared of all charges and formally inducts him into the 00 program.

In other words: the M who gave in to Webb, who let Bond become a fugitive, who let him be arrested, is the same M who in the end takes him back and gives him the number. Not because she changed her mind for a reason the story shows. Because Bond became useful again.

What bothered me was the nature of M's decision. Giving in to Webb was not a choice of intelligence, security or strategy. It was a literally political move: protecting the institution from a leak, even if it meant granting immunity to a man she knew was in the wrong. And when Bond did the right thing, when he refused to stop going after someone who had killed people to cover up a machine's mistakes, he became some kind of potential enemy.

I do not follow stupid orders in my daily life. And the order to drop everything against Webb was exactly that: a stupid order, given by someone who had caved to the man who was wrong and had made a mess. It is the kind of order I, Juliana, would challenge to her face: "you're wrong, and I'm going anyway, you old politician." Bond goes. And the game treats his disobedience as the problem, when the problem was the order.

With that, my grudge against M, which seemed like a matter of taste in chapter 2, becomes a structural problem. A character written to be Bond's support figure ends up being the character who abandons him when he needs her most, and who picks him back up once the dust settles. And the contrast with Moneypenny becomes glaring: she helps Bond even when she shouldn't, and M abandons him right when she should help. That could have been a razor-sharp critique of the institution, the same institution that killed innocent people on a machine's orders. But the game does not treat it as critique. It treats it as paperwork. And the number 007, which should have been the crowning of a journey, arrives smelling like an administrative settlement.

Segundo golpe: a ladra que rouba a cenaSecond blow: the thief who steals the scene

In Antarctica, Bond finally reaches the heart of HYPERION. It is the confrontation chapter 4 set up. The idolater in the temple of his idol. The watcher from above about to climb into the sky.

E o Webb não morre pelas mãos do Bond. And Webb does not die at Bond's hands.

The one who shoots him is Isola Vale, the professional thief Bond met while she was posing as a French agent in Slovakia. She kills Webb and steals HYPERION's core for herself. Bond manages to stop her and destroy the core, but the blow has already landed. The villain who drove the entire story, the man responsible for Greenway's death, leaves the stage at the hand of a third character.

Eu entendo a intenção. É a semente da próxima história.I understand the intention. Isola is ambiguous, dangerous, unpredictable, and making her the one who kills the villain establishes her as an independent force, someone with her own agenda. It is the seed of the next story.

But think about what it costs. The confrontation between Bond and Webb never really happens. There is no moment where the two wills meet. There is no young man who inherited his mentor's faith looking into the eyes of the man responsible for that mentor's death. The climax the game built for hours is handed to a supporting character, and Bond stands there watching.

Terceiro golpe: o chefe erradoThird blow: the wrong boss

E aí vem o fim propriamente dito. And then comes the ending proper.

Freed by the chaos at MI6, Bond runs to THEIA's chamber and finds Damien Webb, the villain's son, stealing its core. He chases Damien through the sewers, disables his exosuit and throws himself and Damien into a reservoir. Damien drowns.

O Damien é o chefe final. E o Damien não tem peso nenhum.Damien is the final boss. And Damien carries no weight at all.

There is a detail that makes it even worse. The game had already killed Damien before, or pretended to. In Vietnam, in the same sequence where Greenway dies, Bond seemingly crushes Damien under a pile of pipes. So the final boss is not just the wrong character. He is a character the game had already resolved, brought back to fill a slot.

Webb would have been a far better climax. There is no argument here. Webb is the idolater, THEIA's creator, the man behind everything, the one responsible for Greenway's death. Damien is the enforcer, the arm, the son who inherited the mission. Facing Damien at the end is like taking down the henchman after the boss has already died off-screen. The fight may be technically good, but it has nowhere to take the emotion. The anger the story built up against Webb no longer has a target.

Três finais, nenhum desfechoThree endings, no resolution

O ataque à sede do MI6. Putting it all together: the game has one true emotional climax, Greenway's death, and after it stacks three endings. Antarctica, with HYPERION. The attack on MI6 headquarters. The chase through the sewers. Each weighs less than the one before, because each is trying to generate an emotion that has already been spent.

GameGrin noted that some sections drag on longer than they should, especially near the end. And GameSpot criticized the pacing of the game as a whole, pointing out that the roughly 20-hour campaign produces sections that are much slower than others.

Está na ordem errada.I agree with both, but I want to be precise about the diagnosis, because it matters. The problem is not length. A game can run 20, 40, 80 hours and still have a breathtaking ending. The problem is the order of the climaxes. When the emotional peak happens before the end, everything after it is downhill, however many explosions it has. The game is not too long. It is in the wrong order.

O ídolo que virou objetoThe idol that became an object

Let me go back to the two previous chapters, because I think the problem with the ending goes beyond pacing.

For hours, the game built THEIA as an idol, even if unknowingly. A machine named after a goddess of sight, consulted as an oracle, served by a man who killed to protect its reputation. A creation that condemned innocent people and that an entire institution treated as a source of truth. That is enormous weight. It is material for a third act that confronts idolatry, that breaks the idol, that forces MI6 to face what it did.

And what does the third act do with that idol?

It turns it into an object that changes hands.

At the end, Isola pulls Bond out of the reservoir, kisses him and runs off with THEIA's core. The idol is not destroyed. It is not confronted. It is not judged. It becomes a MacGuffin, that thing everyone wants to steal and that exists only to set up the next chase. The theological weight the story accumulated is reduced to an item in a thief's pocket.

That is why First Light's anticlimax is not only about pacing. It is about meaning. The game built an engine that asked enormous questions, about foresight, judgment, idolatry and utopia, and in the last act it switched the engine off and let the car coast downhill in neutral.

"Mas todo origin story termina em gancho""But every origin story ends on a hook"

Sim. Yes. And that is the strongest objection to everything I have said, so it deserves to be faced head-on.

The story ends with Bond, newly designated 007 in honor of being the seventh recruit, vowing to track Isola down to recover THEIA's core and find out who she works for. It is an open door for a sequel, and it is deliberate. CEO Hakan Abrak has told IGN he wants First Light to open a possible trilogy of Bond games, with a young version of the character that players can call their own and grow up with.

So no, the hook is not an accident. It is strategy. And origin stories have ended on hooks forever. Batman Begins ends with a playing card. 2006's Casino Royale ends with Bond cornering Mr. White and introducing himself by name.

But look at what those two examples do. Batman Begins closes Ra's al Ghul's story before opening the Joker's. Casino Royale closes Vesper's story, with all the pain it carries, before Bond speaks his own name. The hook comes after the resolution. It is the door that opens once the previous room has been dealt with.

A porta virou a parede inteira. A hook and a resolution are not enemies. You can close the story of now and still leave a door open for the next one. What First Light did was different. The door was not left ajar at the end of the room. The door became the entire wall. The villain died at someone else's hand, the idol was stolen instead of broken, the institution was forgiven without being confronted, and the final boss was someone the game had already killed.

A história de agora não terminou. Ela foi adiada. The story of now did not end. It was postponed.

E adiar não é terminar. And postponing is not finishing.

Capítulo 06Chapter 06

A fronteira do patchThe patch border

E ela me tirou um ponto.I need to go back to the beginning of this text, to that border I crossed halfway through the game. Because First Light's second broken promise is not narrative. It is technical. And it cost the game a point.

O que foi prometidoWhat was promised

O First Light roda no Glacier, o motor proprietário da IO Interactive. First Light runs on Glacier, IO Interactive's proprietary engine. For this game, the studio added to Glacier a volumetric smoke system it said had never been done anywhere before, along with ray tracing and fully dynamic global illumination. It is an ambitious engine, and the game is beautiful. Nobody disputes that.

But the promise that sold the game to PC players was a different one. At GDC 2026, Nvidia announced that First Light would launch with native support for DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction, and that its visuals would be path traced. There was an exclusive trailer, there were exclusive screenshots, there was a video with the technical director. There was even a promotion: anyone who bought an RTX 50 series card between May 14 and June 10, 2026 got a copy of the game.

Path tracing is not a detail in this conversation. It is the most expensive and most coveted lighting technology in games today. Instead of calculating reflections and shadows from predefined light sources, it simulates each ray individually, bouncing off every surface until it reaches the camera. It is the difference between stage lighting and physical light.

E ela não estava lá no lançamento. And it was not there at launch.

O que foi entregue, e quandoWhat was delivered, and when

When the game came out on May 27, it had no hardware ray tracing. TechPowerUp put it bluntly: at launch, just some shader-based systems, with path tracing and Ray Reconstruction promised for a summer update.

Na prática, é ray tracing barato e escalável, pensado pra rodar do console ao PC.But "no hardware ray tracing" is not the same as "no ray tracing." For global illumination, the indirect light that bounces off surfaces, IOI moved to a real-time ray tracing approach, just not the conventional hardware kind: a software solution developed by the studio itself. It is a system similar to Unreal Engine 5's Lumen, combining screen-space ray tracing with light probes scattered across the world that query a simplified version of the scene built from distance fields. In practice, it is cheap, scalable ray tracing, designed to run from console to PC.

E barato é a palavra. And cheap is the word. According to PC Optimized Settings' analysis, the system works well outdoors and in well-lit interiors, struggles with light leaking and large rooms, and costs only about 4 to 5% of performance.

On September 15, a free 11 GB update added the path-traced lighting mode and DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction to the PC version.

And that is exactly where I crossed the border.

Do outro ladoOn the other side

Liguei.I had played the first half on ultra, without path tracing, because it did not exist. When I came back, already past Webb, the mode was there. I turned it on.

The frame rate dropped so much it was not worth it. And I am not talking about losing five or ten frames you can absorb. It is the kind of drop that changes how the game responds in your hands. The tech press testing confirms the scale: on an RTX 5080, turning on path tracing at 4K with DLSS 4 in balanced mode cost 62% of performance on average.

A própria IOI reconheceu o tamanho do problema. O mesmo patch recomendou rodar o path tracing no médio pra RTX 5070 e 5080, deixando o alto pra 5090.IOI itself acknowledged the size of the problem. In hotfix 1.2.2, on September 25, the studio addressed the performance reports following the path tracing update directly, and set expectations: with the recommended settings, around 60 FPS on an RTX 5080 at 1440p, depending on the mission and checkpoint. The same patch recommended running path tracing on medium for the RTX 5070 and 5080, leaving high for the 5090.

Desliguei e não liguei mais.I could have wrestled with the settings until I found a balance point. But here comes the part that really matters: I looked at the screen with path tracing on and did not feel the game gained much graphically. Not enough to justify the cost. I turned it off and never turned it back on.

And there is a reason for that. On ultra, the reflections menu itself talks about rays. The option's description explains that it controls the quality of reflections created by ray casting in screen space and that, if enabled, it also sets the quality of ray-traced reflections.

That description clears up a confusion a lot of people have. Even without any path tracing, the game's reflections were already made by casting rays. Those rays just travel inside the image already on screen, instead of crossing the whole scene in three dimensions. It is a much cheaper form of tracing, which is why it fits on any machine. On mirrors, PC Optimized Settings' analysis also shows planar reflections, which render the scene again from the mirror's point of view, with a precision that fools the eye.

E a luz seguia a mesma lógica. And the light followed the same logic. The game's global illumination was already ray tracing, done in software by Glacier, as the technical analyses confirm. My feeling that the game already used rays for both light and reflections had a basis on both counts.

Much of the leap path tracing promises, the game was already delivering another way, at a much lower price.

What I did notice, and noticed a lot, was something else. Performance got dramatically better, especially after the October 1 update. That was 1.3.0, which brought New Game+, a photo mode, the 00 difficulty and smoother, more responsive weapon animations, plus targeted stability fixes, and it landed right after the September hotfix that was already aimed at performance.

In other words: the game got better to play with every update. It just did not get better because of path tracing.

Here I want to be fair, because it is easy to turn a personal experience into a technical verdict. First Light's path tracing is neither fake nor useless. People who compared it scene by scene found real gains.

O mesmo analista resume que quase tudo que ele tinha criticado no sistema de lançamento foi resolvido.PC Optimized Settings' comparison, with thirty image pairs, shows where it shows up. Sunlight bouncing off surfaces turns white instead of yellow, as it does in real physics. Shadows gain tones, instead of being just light or dark. Interiors lit by bulbs, which the software ray tracing struggled with, improve a lot. Bond's and Isola's faces become much more realistic, with light refracting properly in the eyes and scattering beneath the skin. Glass and wine glasses, which the old system treated as fully transparent, become translucent. The same analyst sums up that almost everything he had criticized in the launch system was fixed.

And in the same breath he says performance remains dismal, with an RTX 4090 dropping from over 100 to 30 FPS at 4K, even with upscaling in performance mode.

Notice where those gains live. In the color of bounced light. In the tone of a shadow in the corner of a room. In the refraction of an eye. In a wine glass. These are photography improvements. They show up when you stop and look, ideally in the photo mode that arrived with 1.3.0. During play, in the middle of an infiltration or a fight, they vanish into motion.

That is why I did not see enough of a difference. Not because it does not exist, but because it lives in places the game never asks you to look.

It is worth opening a parenthesis here to make clear where I am speaking from, because First Light's technical experience depends a lot on which rung you are standing on.

I did not play on consoles, so what follows is Digital Foundry's data, not my experience. On the base PS5, performance mode runs at 720p and 60 FPS, reconstructed with FSR 3.1, and quality mode runs at 1080p and 30 FPS. The PS5 Pro has a single mode, with the base console's quality-mode image but at 60 FPS, and PSSR2 gives it a big sharpness advantage.

Eu estava no topo dessa escada. I was at the top of that ladder. A 5080, on ultra. And even up there, the game's flashiest promise did not deliver what it sold.

This is the point that separates a complaint from a critique. I am not saying path tracing is useless, or that it is too early for this technology, or that only a 5090 can run it properly. I say this because I have already seen, on this very card, path tracing that was worth every frame lost.

In my piece on Resident Evil Requiem, I played on the same RTX 5080, at max settings, with path tracing on. And what I wrote there was that, in a game that uses darkness as a tool of terror, it was not showcase technology. It was technology that changed how horror works. Walking into a corridor lit only by a candle, with enemy shadows deforming on the walls like real physical shadows, is an experience different from anything the same game offers without path tracing. The light there is a fear mechanic.

In my piece on Pragmata, it was the same card, at 4K, with path tracing, DLSS on quality and Multi Frame Generation at 3x. Completely fluid. And I ended that section with an irony that still stays with me: in a city made of data, where everything is fake by definition, the only thing that was not pretending was the light.

Notice what the two cases have in common. In both, Capcom did not put path tracing into the game. It built the game around what the light would do. In Requiem, light is fear. In Pragmata, light is the only truth in a world of lies. The technology serves what the game wants to say.

Vitrine e mecânicaShowcase and mechanic

Em First Light, o path tracing é vitrine. In First Light, path tracing is a showcase. It arrived later, as an update, after the whole game had already been designed, lit and shipped without it. It does not change how the espionage fantasy works. Stealth does not play differently because the shadows got more precise. Combat does not play differently because the reflections got more faithful. Nothing in the game's design depends on light being calculated photon by photon.

And when an expensive technology changes nothing about what the game is, the math does not add up. You pay 62% of your performance for a difference that does not alter the experience. It is understandable that the result feels like so little.

It is not that IOI implemented it badly. I have no way of claiming that, and I do not want to. It is that IOI implemented something the game did not need. Path tracing is not something you hang on a finished game like a new chandelier. When it works, it is part of the architecture.

"Mas path tracing é pra 5090""But path tracing is for the 5090"

That is the most common objection, and it does not hold up, for two reasons.

The first: the promise was not made to 5090 owners. It was made to the entire RTX line, with the 5080 named by IOI itself as the path tracing card for 1440p. The studio set my card as the target for medium mode. I was not trying to do something the studio said I could not.

The second, and more important: Capcom made it work on the same card. Not on a 5090, not on a lab prototype. On the same 5080 sitting on my desk. Requiem and Pragmata proved you can have path tracing that transforms the experience without destroying performance. So when First Light cannot, the problem is not the hardware's limit. It is the place the technology occupies in the project.

A luz e a históriaThe light and the story

A fronteira do patch, então, se fecha sobre a tese. The patch border, then, closes over the thesis.

On this side, I played with the usual light. On that side, I had access to the most expensive light in the world, refused it, and kept the usual light. The game I finished was, visually, almost the same game I started. And narratively, it was the same, comma for comma.

The patch changed the light of the entire world and changed nothing of what I felt. That says a lot about path tracing. And it says even more about the ending, because no light, however well calculated, illuminates a third act that does not know where it is going.

A woman in a dark coat, seen from behind, crosses the Antarctic ice at dawn carrying a core of light in her hand, before the sun rises.
A woman in a dark coat, seen from behind, crosses the Antarctic ice at dawn carrying a core of light in her hand, before the sun rises.

Capítulo 07Chapter 07

Nota 8: o número quase conquistadoScore 8: the number almost earned

Então vamos fazer a conta em voz alta.I promised at the beginning that the score would also have to be earned. So let us do the math out loud.

A GameSpot deu 8, a IGN deu 9, o Guardian e o Video Games Chronicle deram nota máxima. E o público acompanhou: o jogo vendeu 1,5 milhão de unidades no primeiro dia e chegou a 4 milhões em agosto de 2026.For context, First Light was very well received. Metacritic shows 84 on PC, 87 on PS5 and 88 on Xbox, with 97% of critics recommending it on OpenCritic. GameSpot gave it 8, IGN gave it 9, The Guardian and Video Games Chronicle gave it full marks. And players followed: the game sold 1.5 million units on day one and reached 4 million by August 2026.

A minha nota é 8. E ela não é um 8 de média, desses que se dá quando um jogo é "bom, mas". É um 10 com duas subtrações muito específicas. My score is 8. And it is not an average 8, the kind you give when a game is "good, but." It is a 10 with two very specific subtractions.

O que somaWhat adds up

The game earns the points it earns in the first four chapters of this text.

It earns them because it understood that a spy is not an assassin, and turned Hitman's DNA into something that asks for reflexes instead of patience. It earns them for its hand-to-hand combat, which is characterization and fun at the same time. It earns them for the gadgets that hold the stealth pacing together.

It earns them because it had the courage to create a Bond from scratch, with no borrowed face, and to make that Bond wait for his own music. It earns them for Greenway, who made me feel anger, then love, and then cry. It earns them for Q and Moneypenny.

And it earns them, perhaps above all, because it built a narrative engine far denser than any licensed game is obliged to build. A machine named after a goddess of sight, treated as an oracle. An institution that turns foresight into a verdict. A creator who becomes the servant of his creature. A utopia that inherits the fall of whoever made it. Knowingly or not, IOI wrote a game that asks questions theology has been asking for centuries.

Isso tudo é nota 10.All of that is a 10.

O que subtraiWhat subtracts

O primeiro ponto vai embora no terceiro ato.The first point goes away in the third act.

It goes away because the real climax happens before the end, at Greenway's death, and everything after it is downhill. Because Bond becomes almost an enemy and is taken back out of convenience by an M who never has to answer for caving. Because Webb, the villain the whole story set up, dies at Isola's hand instead of facing Bond. Because the final boss is Damien, a weightless character the game had already given up for dead. And because the idol the story spent hours building ends up reduced to an object that changes hands for next season.

O segundo ponto vai embora na fronteira do patch. The second point goes away at the patch border.

It goes away because the path tracing that sold the game to PC players arrived four months late, charged a steep price in performance and did not deliver an image that justified that price. And because I have already seen, on the same card, Capcom prove it can be done differently, by putting light in service of what the game wants to say.

Dez, menos o final, menos a luz. Oito.Ten, minus the ending, minus the light. Eight.

If the ending had worked, it would be a 9. Not a 10. Because even with a perfect third act, the technical promise would still be broken. The two subtractions are independent. One does not make up for the other.

A instituição e as sequênciasThe institution and the sequels

One fact to complete the picture, without drawing more from it than it says. After launch, Amazon confirmed that future Bond games, including First Light's sequels, will be published in-house, no longer under the self-publishing arrangement IOI used here.

I do not know whether that had any influence on the ending we got. I have no evidence of it, and I will not insinuate it. But I know the game ended like someone already looking ahead to next season. And I know next season already has an owner.

And here the theological thread returns one last time, because First Light's ending, however poor it is as a resolution, holds an image I cannot let go of.

O Bond derruba a torre. Até aí, a história fez o que histórias sobre utopia costumam fazer.HYPERION, the watcher from above, the Tower of Babel with a server, is destroyed. Bond brings the tower down. Up to that point, the story did what stories about utopia usually do.

Fugindo. But THEIA survives. The goddess of sight, the oracle that condemned the innocent, the creature Webb served until his death, ends up intact. In Isola's pocket. On the run.

O jogo destruiu o ídolo que governaria e deixou escapar o ídolo que julgava. Quebrou a torre e salvou o oráculo. É a de recuperá-la.The game destroyed the idol that would have governed and let the idol that judged escape. It broke the tower and saved the oracle. And Bond's last promise, the vow that closes the story, is not to destroy THEIA. It is to recover it.

Recover it for what? To hand it back to MI6, the same institution that turned its calculation into a death sentence? The game does not ask. And that silence is, perhaps, the most revealing thing in the entire third act. The story raised the most serious question an espionage game could raise, whether an institution has the right to kill over what a machine predicts, and ended without answering it. It ended with the idol alive and the hero wanting it back.

A aurora que ficou pra amanhãThe dawn left for tomorrow

A primeira luz.In mythology, Theia and Hyperion are the parents of light. Their children are the Sun, the Moon and the Dawn. Eos, the goddess who every morning opens the gates of the sky so the day can begin. The first light.

First Light.First Light.

The game gave its two machines the names of the dawn's parents and named itself after their daughter. And it is tempting to ask who the dawn is in this story. The most beautiful answer would be Bond: the young man born as an agent out of the collision with the two machines, the first light of a new era for the character.

É a promessa dele. But a dawn, by definition, is the beginning of a day that is going to happen. It is not the day. It is the promise of it.

And that is what First Light is. A game that learned to be Bond, that built one of the richest narrative engines I have ever seen in a licensed game, that made me cry over a character I had hated, and that ended as a promise instead of a conclusion. A light announcing a day that has not arrived yet.

Eu dou 8. E vou estar lá quando o dia chegar.I give it an 8. And I will be there when the day comes.

Bond earned the number. The idol earned a sequel. And the dawn, which gives the game its name, was left for tomorrow.
